Hey guys. Ive been on the fence about getting this game for either the Deck or PS5. Youtube videos show that this game performs well on the deck. But I'm wondering if I would be missing out on the graphics and visual details because I heard Cyberpunk looks and plays beautfiul on a big screen with RT.

The best 7/10 game ever made available for free as a tribute to Ozzy Osbourne.

I keep wanting to consider other options but lack of a good trackpad seems like a really serious limitation. I'm especially baffled by this on the ROG Ally which being windows based you think would be even more in need of a trackpad. The Steam Deck isn't the most bang/buck performance wise, but when I think of trackpad, battery life, and perks of a console experience, I've had to hold back on buying an Ally etc. Currently waiting for refurbished to go back in stock and continually stopping myself from buying an Ally in the meantime.

I’ve owned my Steam Deck for a while now and always leaned into RPGs, especially the ARPG variety, and the all time standard, roguelites. It’s pretty much the the most hyped up genre for the Deck and the praise is well deserved but hooo-ly hell — why didn’t anyone tell me how perfect shoot em ups on this handheld wonder?

I started with Galactic Glitch after seeing it pop up in a random list, and it absolutely devoured a whole day when I booted it up. It’s a twin-stick roguelike shmup where you’re this tiny ship navigating a glitchy computer system, blasting enemies in these arena styled rooms that feel more like thick oily bubbles with how you and enemies wobble in them. The big twist here is gravity pull mechanic you have, and you can grab and launch asteroids and debris into other ships. Grab small ships and bash them at bigger ones, or just mash yourself into others. Lots of builds to build around and it can be chaotic but the flow it has on the Deck is a superb chef’s kiss. The pick-up-and-play nature of roguelites/shmups/ bullet hell combos also pairs so well with handheld gaming.

That led me down the path of checking out a bunch of others games in the genre, and now I’m fully in. Here’s some I loaded up on on and off sale in the last month or so

  • Drainus – gorgeous pixel art, plays like a dream, and the reflect mechanic is super satisfying
  • Ikaruga – okay, obviously a classic, but I hadn’t touched it in years and it runs as good if not better than I expected it to
  • Astebreed – more bullet spectacle than pure shmup, but wow the presentation
  • Mushihime-sama – because sometimes you just want to dodge 8 billion bullets at once. Just found out about it about a decade late and it feels like a more noteworthy discovery than many newer games I played

Performance: Basically of of these games run at a locked 60 or more (1280x800 (800p), barely touch battery, and are so easy to jump in and out of. Goes without saying that being not that demanding, highest settings are nothing on them. Instant sleep/wake on the Deck makes quick runs actually feel doable without a big time investment too.

To sum up, it’s the most fun I’ve had with my Deck consistently in one whole genre in months.

There’s something magical about playing on an OLED screen in a completely dark room. Every time the screen goes partially or completely black, it looks absolutely stunning. I especially love title screens where only the game’s logo is lit up while the rest of the screen is pitch black — the kind of black that feels like the display is turned off.

What I can’t stand, though, is when the background isn’t truly black but instead a slightly grey, illuminated tone. Please — give us perfect blacks on title screens.

We took a look at Wuchang: Fallen Feathers and reviewed it ahead of its release tomorrow. Unfortunately, the game is not ready to be played on the Steam Deck. On the lowest possible settings, it will regularly drop below 30 FPS and look quite pixelated from the upscaling. Changing upscaling to FSR and switching to Proton GE 10-10 did help a little, but not enough to make it stable.

I also tried using both frame generation and Lossless Scaling FG to see how it affects performance, and both make the game worse. Stutters, slowdowns, and input lag hurt the experience further, and I can't recommend using it.

As of right now, this isn't a Steam Deck-friendly game, so I recommend using Moonlight or GeForce NOW to stream it.

You can read more about my thoughts in our review!

Previously Enjoyed Games - hades, balatro, portal 1/2, factorio, the witness, slay the spire, titanfall 2, half life 2, cyberpunk

Preferred Genre - any

Budget - any

Other Notes - games i didn’t enjoy include outer wilds (amazing concept, but not for impatient gamers), stardew valley (same issue, too impatient), Dave the diver (tried to do too much.. fishing + sushi was fun everything else was overboard), dredge (cool art but boring gameplay imo

Hello all!

I am new to the world of PC gaming and steam, but my BF has been playing for quite a while now. Gaming and general nerdiness is our hobby, and after securing a promotion at work- I decided I wanted to surprise my man with a steam deck & accessories for his birthday next week.

You probably don’t care about this part, but I want this to be perfect for him. He’s had a really rough year due to circumstances outside our control. I love him dearly, and he is a wonderful partner and dog dad. I want to treat him with something he’ll love and get a lot of use out of. He already has expressed interest in a steam deck, but in a fanciful-sort of- “wouldn’t it be nice if we weren’t so poor” kind of way. He definitely won’t see it coming.

I’ll be getting the middle-tier, OLED model after reading reviews. But, I’m not entirely sure what all accessories/cables/docks are necessary or worth the extra expense.

That’s where I’m hoping you all can help me! Is the dock worth the $79? Do you have an awesome case you can recommend? Are there other items I should purchase to make this thing playable from the get-go for him?

Thanks in advance 🩵
