I'll try to be quick and to the point because I don't know if this has been theorized or posted yet but I wanted to put it out there for discussion.
With chapter 1151 out, and the reveal of the "Othello Board", I believe I may have figured out what Imu's ability is and what the One Piece is as well. We see the "Othello Board" actively change people into a "dark version of themselves" seemingly now completely under Imu's control, or at least allied to them and no longer in control of themselves. This leads me to believe Imu's devil fruit/ability is something along the lines of "Game Master", or maybe even more specific to just the game Othello, but essentially everyone is a piece of the board game and Imu brings the game to life. Imu is capable of using the rules of the board game to influence those around him or near the other pieces they control.
This leads me to two lines of thought: 1) Imu is also a piece on the board who can be influenced, but not if he removes his piece from the game so no one can touch them, making Imu immortal until someone brings that piece back to finish the game or (the theory I favor and will explain why below) 2) Imu is the player representing the black pieces but by removing a random piece from the game, the game can no longer finish, and Imu cant die. Therefor, the One Piece is this missing piece of the board game. A simple piece of a board game that is now holding the world and all the people hostage. ("He laughed").
The other catch to this could be that Luffy, or more specifically "Nika", for some reason is not a "piece on the board" and therefor can not be controlled. He is "free" of the rules of the game, an outside party, or maybe...Nika could be the player representing the white pieces (this could explain the difference in his awakened state and the celestial dragon's). Maybe those with the "Will of D" are related to Nika's "white pieces" that can no longer be changed back to black pieces, kind of like in the game Othello when a piece is in the corner and can no longer be changed again. So those with the Will of D are "free" until the game ends. The god knights and celestial dragons would be Imu's "black pieces" that can no longer be changed back to white for the same reason.
Essentially, Imu and Nika are stuck in this never ending game because Imu cheated and removed a piece to stay immortal. So now, Imu chases down Nika to stop him from finishing this game and ending their immortality.
