Meta FAQ (monero.town)
submitted 2 years ago by admin@monero.town to c/meta@monero.town

How do I participate on Lemmy instances outside my own?

If it's already discovered (see the next section on that) you can go directly by URL in this format. https://yourlemmy.server/c/coolcommunity@coolserver.com or by searching for coolcommunity in the search bar. You will stay logged in with your home server this way but can vote, comment, post using your current identity on that other server meaning you don't need a separate account. Neat right?

Discovering: Hey I can't see [x] newly started community on my server! I can't find [y] popular community from my small server! What gives? (IMPORTANT)

Some communities might not appear from All, until any logged in user of that server searches for it in the lemmy-ui (web) searchbar.

For example, to "discover" coolcommunity @coolserver.com from instance yourlemmy.server, you would type "!coolcommunity@coolserver.com" within yourlemmy.server's search bar and wait 10 seconds. Ensure that community has at least one post that can sync, and even then it may take a while to actually appear in some cases. If you set the filter to "communities", enter the community in that format and press search and nothing happens, that means it is discovered. If it says No results, try again after 10 seconds, check that you have spelled and formatted correctly.

That causes your server to "discover" it and will start syncing posts and be searchable and also available on apps like Jerboa. Only after it is discovered can you use a URL link to it in this format: https://yourlemmy.server/c/coolcommunity@coolserver.com I coined the term discovering here but in essence it's initiating federation and post-fetching from that community.

I signed up but nothing happened/Some notification came up but I missed it. What do I do next?

This server has a manual approval process. Usually requests are approved within 30 minutes but it can take up to 12 hours to get approved. Try logging in after an hour, if it works you are successfully registered. You won't get any notification at all of your approval unless you inquire about your application through outside channels like the monero matrix rooms.

How do I find more communities?

The communities page or searching for communities.

Help! Why can't I see any/many posts and comments on an active thread?

Check your Language settings. Select English, Undetermined and your native language(s) using Ctrl+Click in the webui.

Where are the "Hot" and Important posts on Lemmy?

Whichever server you decide with, you can use the All page from the home of your server, sort by Hot, New, Active. Just keep in mind again, if your server has few "discovered" communities you won't see much outside your own server. Subscribe to major, active communities that you might be interested in then you can look in your "Subscribed" page as your feed for buzzing posts.

Statspage on number of Lemmy users etc.?

Sure! FediDB, this page is also useful to find new servers to join.

Anything else I need to know?

Please be careful with what you share on the internet. This should be common sense as even content on Reddit can be archived before deletion.

This post is based on this Lemmy FAQ.

Hey there, just wanted to thank all the people that have been active on here over the last 2 years :)

We migrated servers earlier this week and still have to fix a bunch of configuration-stuff to get back all our old images & add .onion support but overall it went decently well & town won't dissappear any time soon.

That's about it, see you at Monerokon!

I stumbled across this article and agree, monero.town should not be associated with Cloudflare either. Maybe the operator can replace it by using Arweave?

60+ PWD (monero.town)

If you use a password that has more than 60 characters, everything that exceeds these 60 characters is cut off by the Monero.Town UI. Without informing the user. I found this out by trial and error when logging in with my slightly longer password didn't work. I found no indication of what password criteria or limitations Monero.Town has.

https://lemmy-federate.com/

Monero.Town isn't registered on lemmy-federate, adding it to the tool will keep the xmr communities available on instances that use lemmy-federate, and even allow new communities to be autoadded.

Iโ€˜d like to know who owns monero.town. Is it a single individual? Or ist it multiple people?

I am more and more (and almost always now) only receiving 1 year old posts in my Lemmy feed for this instance on mobile, even with the "New" filter.

The issue is independent of the exact mobile app used as I have it with Jerboa and Thunder. The monero.town website is working fine though.

Anyone else got this?

I was coming here less and less often since the DDOS because Jerboa wasn't working anymore to show posts from here.

It seems to be working now. Is the ddos over and the annoying cloudflare captcha (this is the ddos protection that was causing issues with the mobile apps) gone?

Otherwise I was going to suggest a kuno so that the admins can implement something better.

Lemmy without federation is kinda pointless. Please look into what causes this issue

For the last couple of days we were offline due to a DDoS attack originating from Tor.

We are now behind cloudflare (๐Ÿ’€) but at least we are online.

We might switch to a different CDN in the future.

This was a massive upgrade from 0.19.3 to 0.19.4 and finally to 0.19.5:

0.19.4 Patchnotes

0.19.5 Patchnotes

The change with most user impact is that everyone can now see how many upvotes & downvotes a comment or post (hover above the vote count) has. Previously only the sum of all votes was shown via the default lemmy UI.

Some of my friends are going against me because "you're monero shiller always pessimic". OK, but guys. I could be happy to see gains in my wallet.

But seeing all these non-sense with brc/ordinals/ETFs & one of my friends extradited to the US, I simply can't feel right.

I tried to warn them about if they had samourai XPUB leaked coins, they should have swapped them for monero and get back for a bigger UTXO.

And yet again I'm called of 'shitcoiner', but if it's to see them in jail the next year.

I can't mentally profit of life by seeing people going out of my life trough prison & suicides. I even started to take benzos to calm down dark toughts.

I noticed a lot of down-vote attack on whatever topic about Monero.

If down-vote spam continues, I have more than 800 trash accounts to suppress your unindexing attempts, I could even put posts in trending.

Don't make me "evil" (by starting botting activities) please, because I'm a winner in this domain.

Hello guys.

In about 50 days the 1 year hosting runs out for the current server. Fitting, since it has only a 100 GB disk that can't easily be expanded and we currently take up about 40 GB of that.

There will be an announcement post once everything has been prepared for the migration and I'll attempt to restore the entire instance on the new server. Ideally the instance should come back up after minimal downtime and all the content remains exactly like it was before.

Consider joining the matrix channel to stay up to date even while the site is potentially down :)

For some reason posts on our instance have recently gotten more downvotes from outside instances than usual and many posts look like this:

I personally don't like the idea of disabling downvotes but if the feature is mostly going to be used by outside users because crypto is "le bad" we might as well turn it off.

21

The instance is now over half a year old and so far we've experience decent growth and minimal downtime.

I'm quite happy with it. Even though most content is still on r/Monero, we do get a handful of posts every week.

Since this was primarily set up as a fallback for the subreddit without any spam/scam bots thanks to strict whitelisting I think the initial goal has been more than fulfilled :)

What do you guys think?

I was posting on other instances (lemmy.world) and checked their modlog to make sure I'm not banned or defederated. Know most people here probably just follow Monero news, so it's fine if it's better to for me to just make an account on a larger instance.

Anyways, it's been a while since I've seen a meta discussion. How have you all been this year, and what do you all think of the fediverse from these past six months?

I made one post, that's it. I never wanted to mod that community and never agreed to it. It seems like the original mod appointed me somehow and then left?

If anyone is interested in modding this very quiet community please speak up, otherwise I'll close it by end of year.

Edit: If you want to take over this role, please comment on [Meta] Looking for new mod to take over
