Ernest recently posted a site update, which included this note:

When Kbin suddenly gained popularity, the project's maintenance costs far exceeded my initial estimates. While community support still allows for the cluster's maintenance, I also need to take care of my own livelihood and commitments.

You may not know (or may have forgotten) that you can directly support kbin and Ernest financially via the following:

As he wrote back in July:

Many of you asked me about the possibility of recurring support. I wasn't entirely convinced, especially since the current account balance should maintain the instance. However, I think it would be irresponsible of me not to consider it. /kbin has grown to a level where I can't foresee everything that will happen. It would be great if we could cover monthly costs with Patreon / Liberapay. All funds from Buy Me a Coffee will be transferred to this pool, but from now on, I'll treat it as buying me a coffee... or a beer... literally ;)

It would be nice if he got a few more messages like this: https://www.buymeacoffee.com/kbin/c/6876421

edit: fixed typo

/kbin is certainly not dying, as @fr0g pointed out, work on new features and bug fixes is ongoing. However, it may give the impression that it is, and for that, I take full responsibility and owe you an explanation.

Several factors have contributed to this situation. The first and most significant reason is my family issues, which I must prioritize. I'm doing my best to stabilize the situation as quickly as possible, but not everything is within my control. The second reason is unfortunate financial matters. When Kbin suddenly gained popularity, the project's maintenance costs far exceeded my initial estimates. While community support still allows for the cluster's maintenance, I also need to take care of my own livelihood and commitments. Another reason involves spam campaigns and other issues that I need to address behind the scenes. I don't want to go into specifics right now, but there will come a time when I can share more. My top priority is to resolve all these matters so that I can return to working on Kbin full-time.

I spend every spare moment writing code and reviewing code? from other contributors. It's a lot of work that goes into development, and I try to verify every accepted pull request and make improvements when I can. It also takes up a lot of time, more than it may seem. I have also delegated some responsibilities and permissions to the Kbin core team (https://codeberg.org/org/Kbin/teams), which has allowed the project to continue to grow, and I am immensely grateful for that. However, I still want to maintain overall control, although over time, we will work on better processes to make it less dependent on me.

I paused updates on kbin.social some time ago until the release of the first version. Hence, the impression that nothing is happening. Kbin is, in fact, developing so rapidly that I wouldn't be able to respond to potential issues quickly enough, adding to the stress.

I've given myself a deadline to resolve all my issues and release the first official version by the end of September. If I can't meet the deadline, I will step down from leading the project and transfer full rights over the repository and instance to the contributors. Of course, this includes the budget I mentioned earlier, earmarked for instance maintenance.

I feel truly awful about this. I can't even keep up with threads on Matrix Spaces, notifications here, etc. Right now, the only way to contact me is through the contact form. However, I want to catch up on everything as soon as possible and stabilize the situation. It's crucial to me, but at the moment, I can't put it above family matters. I apologize for letting you down, and I appreciate your words of support. If it weren't for such an amazing community, I might have given up a long time ago.

I hope updates after this big one are gonna come more regularly and that smaller fixes aren't pushed to be included in big updates.
There's a lot of issues which have seemingly been solved a long time ago now but we don't have the fixes because it's all in the big update.

It doesn't feel great to have issues, some of them quite critical, go unfixed for this long and it's probably making people not use kbin as much which is dangerous if we wanna keep this place, especially at this early stage.

I'm of course very appreciative of the work being done and I'm looking forward to the update!

Sometimes when I upload a link it doesn't load properly, it happens no big deal, but then I can't delete these buggy posts and then I end up unintentionally spamming a bunch of duplicates as I try to post again

Here is an example of one of these attempts
https://kbin.social/m/my_mouldy_memes/t/445093/Title

The error I get when trying to delete is

We are working on resolving the issues
Over the next few days, there will be a change in server infrastructure. Temporary problems with the website's functionality may occur during this time.

Any suggestions?

If anyone votes on an old comment from the source instance, your newly subscribed kbin instance will grab the older message when the new vote comes in. Works with both Lemmy and kbin sources.

If the comment voted on is a reply to a reply, it will load in all the parent comments as well.

If you have a login on the other instance, you can vote and unvote and it will still populate your kbin comments.

There is a user who posted an irrelevant ad on a magazine I follow, so I clicked their profile to see if the rest of what they posted was spam too. It was. However, I didn’t find a report user option on their profile. Is there one anywhere? I know I can go through and report their individual posts, but I’d also like to flag the user for attention.

Just wanted to ask.

I know you can follow kbin users from Masto and co and see their threads and boosts and I think that's pretty cool, but what does it do on kbin? I followed two accounts to test and it looks like the threads they create will show up in my subscribed feed. But what about their microblog posts and boosts? It seems like there is no option in the microblog view to filter for follows and no dedicated feed for follows.

On kbin, I can see and subscribe to Peertube channels, but I never seem to get any content.

and is there anything we, kbin, or the wider fediverse can do to combat them?

I realise they're probably solely an issue to users like me, who frequently browse all and by newest, because of the relative dearth of content here compared to reddit, so the verdict might so not be no further action is needed. and admittedly, it's not hard to just scroll past their posts.

I recently created an account on a new kbin instance. Is there an easy way to migrate my account to that new instance? I feel like this should be easy to find. As such I suspect that such doesn't exist yet, or I'm an idiot. Both are equally possible.

I haven't been able to find an answer for this, so I'm hoping asking this here would be appropriate.

I'd like to try my hand at some development of Kbin but I don't exactly know how to test a web application of this scale. Obviously, the roadblock for me is understanding how to develop and test features without having a dedicated domain name -- as my understanding is that federated services heavily rely on the use of a domain name. This also would imply that the server has to be exposed to the internet, much like development of a email client.

But obviously I must be missing something here. Is there any recommended guidelines for setting up a development environment for Kbin? Ideally, a containerized approach via Docker or Podman would be ideal as I wouldn't want to muck with my host system. Additionally, is it possible to use hostnames in order to simulate and test federation capabilities? Lastly, are there any thorough reads (blogs or forum posts) that go in depth with developing federated web applications and how the development process differs from standard webdev?

I do not have the time, patience, or thick skin needed to be a moderator. I do have a community or two I’d like to create on Kbin and post to, though. Is it currently possible for this set of steps to happen?

  1. Create a magazine, which automatically makes you its moderator.
  2. Appoint another moderator.
  3. Either remove yourself as moderator, or have the other moderator successfully remove you.

I put together this unofficial guide to /kbin. It's not perfect. Probably needs some more clean up and a few gaps filled ... but version 1.0 is out!

I will be keeping this up to date the best that I can. If you have any feedback, changes, or requests, be sure to post them at @unofficial_kbin_guide. Hope this helps!

Does anyone else see this post by t2aki at the top of https://kbin.social/microblog/newest ? I'm not sure if it's a federation bug, like some kind of miscommunication between kbin and their instance on the timestamp of the post, or some kind of scheduled-in-advance post that is set to go live one hour from now. I'm not even sure it will ever stop being "1 hour from now."

248

I’m sure I’ve seen comments indicating that people can do this.

Every spoiler tag variant I'd ever tried didn't work. Google was fruitless. No wiki/helpguide on the sidebar. Would be nice.
