Examples that come to mind are Tame Impala’s New Person, Same Old Mistakes and Grimes’ Oblivion.

In New Person, Same Old Mistakes he is contradicting himself throughout the chorus and in Oblivion she’s ignoring advice to focus on health and just sings “La la la la la” towards the end.

Any similar songs come to mind?

I like explicitly cathartic songs about how fucked up things are and burning them down. I also like songs that address frustrating scenarios and do it in a way that gets me pumped.

Some of my favorite songs that fit this description:

  • Bullet with Butterfly Wings by Smashing Pumpkins - A song about a problem that you feel violently angry about but your anger literally cannot fix the situation I.E. a bullet (a tool of murder) carried by butterfly wings.
  • Self-Esteem by The Offspring - A song about a guy who is trapped in a manipulative, uncaring relationship with a woman who uses him for sex and sleeps with his friends. A situation he is helpless to prevent because of his low self-esteem.
  • Literally all of Nirvana - Rape Me, Heart Shaped Box, Smells Like Teen Spirit, About A Girl, etc.

In case you can't tell I really like songs that are telling a story or evoking a specific feeling. I also really like when an artist intentionally uses harsh sound as opposed to more pleasant sounds without ruining the piece.

Some bands I really don't like. I just don't like them and I won't elaborate for fear of starting a debate in the comments:

  • Avenged Sevenfold
  • In This Moment
  • Set It Off
  • Rise Against

One final thing, try to recommend me some obscure artists! We've all heard Linkin Park and Metallica. Recommend me something I haven't heard before please!

Looking for recommendations with similar vibes to these shows. I like the lgbt representation and the whole doomed romance aspect where the romance isnt exactly the main focus (shows that have a main plot that isnt solely focused on the romance but its still obviously there)

To elaborate, I'm looking for movies in which you might see something new with every watch or where a director has included some enigmatic references or symbolism that might not be obvious upon first viewing or without being informed. A few examples:

  • Guillermo del Toro's movies and his usage of shapes, numbers, and colours contrasts (Pan's Labyrinth, Crimson Peak, Hellboy)

  • Charlie Kaufman (Synechedoche, NY and how he has a certain character somewhat hidden or barely visible in the the background)

  • David Fincher (the Starbucks cup in every scene of Fight Club)

  • Steven Spielberg with references to other films and Ready Player One's pop. culture references

  • David Koepp (Secret Window and his use of the mirror, hats, and framing)

  • Joaquim Dos Santos & Kemp Powers & Justin K. Thompson with Spiderman: Into the Spider-verse and the pop. culture references

  • Martin Scorsese (his subtle foreshadowing, using of the letter 'X' in scenes with characters set to die in The Departed)

BTW, I've listed some specific MOVIES here; but, if there are instances in other movies by the directors mentioned above, feel free to mention them, as well.

Madness by Muse and My Immortal by Evanescence both use a similar arrangement style where most of the song is stripped down and then the whole band comes in for the last chorus. I think that these arrangements are really epic and I’m wondering if there are other songs that pull off this style as well?

Please recommend female singers with deep, raspy voices.

Looking for some female singers with voices that even sound damaged. Any genre, but it would be nice to find something like metal or rock or anything heavier sounding.

Big bonus if the singer is an older woman.

Someone similar to Marianne Faithfull would be perfect, i esp like her voice in Guilt.

I’ve been searching for voices like this for ages, but I’m not well versed in music and google gives popular and young singers, which is not what I need.

Thank you in advance.

EDIT: I live in the US and am aware of a lot of shows, so if you can suggest something that isn't readily available in the US I'm even more interested since I might not know about it. Thanks!

  • Chris Lilley's mockumentaries
  • Why Are You Like This?
  • Slings & Arrows
  • Schitt's Creek
  • Flight of the Conchords & What We Do in the Shadows (I know they were produced stateside but the humor came from NZ) (Our Flag Means Death is on my to-watch list)

Other shows I like:

Comedies/Dramadies:

  • Bojack Horseman
  • This Way Up
  • Always Sunny in Philadelphia
  • Sex Education
  • Parks & Rec
  • The Bear
  • Avenue 5
  • Teenage Bounty Hunters
  • Severance
  • Derry Girls
  • The End of the Fucking World
  • Stranger Things
  • Derek
  • Extras
  • Community
  • IT Crowd
  • Ted Lasso
  • Shrinking
  • The Big Door Prize
  • Moone Boy

Dramas:

  • Mindhunter
  • Black Summer
  • Squid Game
  • Kingdom

Animated:

  • The Life and Times of Tim
  • The Legend of Vox Machina
  • Arcane

Additionally, most of the superhero shows (live action and animated).

Thanks!

I'm a music teacher, and my students go CRAZY for Crab Rave, but that's not gonna get me through the rest of this year. I'm just looking for stuff that's weird and kinda goofy but with that same upbeat energy

I'm a queer woman and for some reason, men proclaiming their feelings about female-coded objects really scratches an itch for me, hahah! It's the admiration, the poetry, the metaphor, the distance.

Very generic, I know lol.

Been busy with life where it feels like I haven’t had time to check out any music, trending or new.

Interested in hip hop as the title says. Tend to have my moods where I’m listening more for the lyrics and flow, other times I just want to hear something that hypes me up while I work at my desk lol.

Appreciate any recs in advance

Tired of romantic songs, I want some songs about friendships. The best ones I can think of are the Coldplay songs Green Eyes (written about the band’s bass player) and Old Friends but I don’t know many others. Any genre is cool. Thank you!

Edit: another good one I thought of Are You Happy? By Oscar Lang

There's something about it that scratches an itch in my brain, and I can't get enough of it. No Johnny Cash though. I like him, it just doesn't scratch my itch.

some of my playlist:

Low male voices:

The Sound of Silence by Disturbed

The Water Is Wide by Fred Neill

Can't Help Falling In Love by Roo Panes

Shallow Brown by Richard Hawley (not super low but it has a sound that works)

In the Pines by Smog

Misty Mountains from The Hobbit

I've been obsessed with the song Sexy Boy by Air, and I'm specifically looking for songs with a similar euphoric, atmospheric, airy yet sultry and sexy vibe. Any recommendations?

Very open to different musical styles, but looking for something newer. The more syntactically disjointed, surreal, and rich with bizarre imagery the better.

I really like when I can behind the "feeling of a song", whether that feeling is an emotion (Such as Of Monsters and Men/lead singer Nanna Bryndis' solo work, Aurora, some of Angus & Julia Stone and Sonata Arctica's songs) or whether it's a song with a story (Sonata Arctica, Altaria) or even better bands with entire concept albums (Coheed & Cambria, Ancient Bards). Genre isn't so much an issue (though the bands I've listed show Indie/Folk or Power Metal lol)

I know it's vague. But can anyone make any recommendations based on this? Essentially concept albums or songs where the band/singers emotion is heavily invested/felt in their songs?
