I was inspired by this: https://www.printables.com/model/86396-self-defense-cat but wanted to make it more robust, so I traced the shape and made my own model in pirated Solidworks. One side looks better than the other but came out well overall I think. It’s thicker and at 100% infill. Also much sharper. Would certainly hurt to get punched in the face with this… “keychain”.

EDIT: I'd be happy to share the file too if anyone wants it. I'm not sure where I could upload it but I'd be willing to try.

i did this by loosely following this tutorial video. it's more of a work in progress cause my hands got tired but my plan is to keep making these until whittling squirrels comes easy to me.

for next time i want to make sure i follow the tutorial more closely cause i sort of watched it a few times then ran with it. i need to practice some cuts that i'm really struggling with to define the shapes more. also this poor squirrels tail turned out much too small, should be big and fluffy looking meow-tableflip

Some time ago I mentioned to my partner that I've always wanted a microscope as a hobby 🔬 they saved some money and got a cheap one for me recently, and I'm having so much fun!

Pictured is the thin peel that's intimate with the garlic clove, stained with eosin (I think) and magnified x1200. It's great because it's already 1 cell thick 🤏

What are some tips you guys have for a beginner? I'm looking into buying methylene blue for staining too.

Decided to make a sierpinski's tetrahedron as a first REAL project! I built a shitty angleiron workbench (with an old door ziptied onto it as the tabletop) before but I'm actually trying this time so it's different

170 welds completed so far crab-party !! So, only 346 left to go!!... doggirl-tears

This was a really good idea until I remembered how complex fractals are, like GIRL, DUH, fuck was I thinking hahaha

Its REALLY scuffed though, I'm talkin like using my stick welder to melt a half inch off the end off of the pieces I had precut to make it shorter so it will fit in the actual dimensions needed, I've been holding the smallest (~2") pieces with a wrench and holding it in place freehand. It's been a lot of fun so far, and I'm definitely improving as I go, I weld my welding stick to my stock way less often now, and achieve arc much more reliably too, which is cool to see my own progress within the project!

I hurt my shoulder a bit ago so I haven't been able to do much lately, but welding is pretty low impact in that I mostly just sit on a folding chair in my driveway next to my shitty workbench lol

Have some more views!

still new to english paper piecing but it's lots of fun! i think my stitching is ok but i feel like i'm still trying to find the balance of making sure i'm not packing in too many stitches or going too deep / shallow.

here's a photo of the back

and now i'm preparing to try and do a pattern similar to this next :3c

Really came down to the wire to get this done before pride month was over, but, after many months, I'm finally happy with how it looks! This was supposed to be my "low-effort army", so much for that lmao.

Been playing around with the Dremel Digilab available at my library, hoping that I can make myself some poorhammer units. I know these detailed pieces really need to be printed on a fancy resin printer, but $4 wasn't a bad price to experiment with scale shrug-outta-hecks. I was hoping I could attempt to make some Battletech minis, too, but I'll probably need to use a resin printer for that, too

The smaller/thinner bits totally got fucked up tho lol

If anyone has any resin printer services they recommend, let me know!

Been working on these on and off since October-ish. Kill Team Tau Pathfinders with a vaguely WW2 Soviet summer uniform inspired color scheme, and an Awesome and Shadowhawk from Battletech. Still need to go back and do highlights and some details (like the lenses on the helmets/drones) and basing.

Starting to sand and wash pieces for a Coldstar Commander suit. I'm new to Warhammer and mini painting in general, but excited to start building up some robots!

Like can I just throw sprues into the general recycling that I put bottles and cans in?

The only thing I didn't already have a printable model for was a Daemon Prince/Be'lakor, so I found these two kits for a very nice discount

My other 675 points are three War Dogs and fifteen Nurgling swarms (very proud of both of these, also, how're you gonna call something a "War Dog" and not have it be a pupper, come the hell on)

I am really happy with how this turned out. It's exactly what I was going for: a rich, really warm blue/almost black. Both the blue and the red show very clearly through in different places. What's wild is how transformative the black paste wax was. Here is a before pic

I was definitely nervous about it looking too garish at that point.

The finish is 2 coats of red milk paint followed by a single coat of a 1# shellac cut. Quick sand with 240 and 4 coats of blue milk paint, followed by the paste wax. All finishes were made by me and are non toxic. The tactile effect of the beeswax is also very pleasant.

The idea is that with use the black and blue will wear away revealing the red underneath which will resist just a bit more for the shellac addition. The wax of course is easy to top off, so there's a little more control there in terms of wear and application.

Here is the interior:

Still needs a couple of finishing touches-- hangers for the smaller hand saws and a box for the combo plane, but at this point it is complete. Plenty of space inside to grow into as well. This is my first real piece of furniture and I learned a lot. Looking forward to the next project.

First I need to hit the sewing machine to make some tool rolls

DIY furniture wax (hexbear.net)

I love the feel of wax on furniture and have been using Johnson's paste wax for years. The big problem with paste wax is it smells fucking awful, like opening a gas can. This is no surprise since it is made from petroleum.

After my venture into milk paint I decided to see what else I might be able to do to detox my finishing options. Making my own wax seemed like a good place to start.

After a little bit of research I found a few recipes, almost all of which were the same-- one part beeswax and four parts oil, by volume. I used beeswax pellets which can be found at craft stores or online, though you could use blocks or even refine your own from comb surplus if you happen to know a beekeeper. Just cut it up so it melts easier. For the oil, typically you will see folks use linseed oil for this, which is hard to find, unless it's flax in which case it's super expensive.

I went to my local crunchy food store to try to find some flax oil and was shocked to find it's like 40 bucks a quart-- so instead settled on a $12 bottle of culinary hemp oil.

Most recipes call for heating the oil and wax together in a double boiler, then pouring it into the final containers. This is unnecessary and makes a mess-- pick a nice wide mouth glass jar to hold your finished product, then put the oil and wax in the jar and put the whole thing in the microwave. After a couple of minutes the oil will heat up enough to melt the wax, and when it's completely melted give it a stir and throw a lid on it-- boom you're done. No mess.

After it's hardened it can be used like normal paste wax. And folks let me tell you-- the hemp blend smells amazing. Don't be put off by the light green color-- it doesn't transfer at all.

It is a joy to use and the beeswax leaves a superior finish to the petroleum waxes, it's very grippy and smooth in the hand. I also love that I can eat it with no ill effects. The paste wax feels like it has to be aired out overnight just to let the smell dissipate.

You can also add pigment to it-- I added black iron oxide to a small jar and used it on all of my hand planes. Here is a before and after on my cheap scrub plane:

The black wax works it's way into the pores in the grain, creating a patina. I have also tried this with brown iron oxide and the effect is similar though it leaves a warmer and less muted finish. You can also add the same pigment that's in the milk paint of your choice, and get a really nice effect with the colors popping.

I am using the black wax on my tool chest-- more to come on that here very shortly

I'd planned on putting a bow there but the Kuromi skull inside the gear was too good. I'm kind of frustrated by how much I like it. The spreading of divine knowledge will henceforth be known as Kuromification

There was a post on bluesky going around about a catgirl army and I realized it would make a very fun lore-compatible* admech modeling opportunity, (to go with my other, non-lore-compatible admech modeling project, Gundam Girl Witches and also the pteraxii are on skateboards.)

I also made a Dark Heresy 2e character that might be the only one of these I end up actually printing, but she'll get made, at least. Maybe also I can find people to play Inquisitor/28 somewhere.

*~lol~

I had a shitty ceramic ocarina from this online store "ocarinawind," it was 10 bucks at a thrift store and i guess it was good enough for 10 dollars. Actually, i just realized you can see it a bit in the picture, lmao. Anyway, i heard great things about the night by noble line, so i bought the alto c and soprano c. It was 60 bucks all in all, which is insane for two high quality instruments. they're really nice, the sound quality is noticably better and there's way less pitch variance by small inconsistencies in covering the holes. it's awesome.

I'm a little excited for this, despite having a bit of a plamo backlog (some Battletech and a whole ass Tau Combat Patrol box side-eye-1side-eye-2)

waiting for my actual models and my new paints to get here but got impatient so decided to try some stuff out for bases. wanted to get sort of like a cracked stone / marble tile look? never really done anything fancier than slapping some astrogranite on before.

Can't wait. Love the Emperor's Children and I'm going to splurge on their models when they finally drop.

After 26 days of escalating actions, striking workers at the Catalonian paint manufacturer Acrylicos Vallejo have won significant victories at the negotiating table. Vallejo manufactures the Game Color and Model Color line paints that are most popularly used for miniatures and wargames. According to a post on the Catalonian labor organization CGT’s Bluesky page, a pre-agreement has been signed that would guarantee workers a salary increase, a parental aid package, new workplace harassment protocols, and occupational safety improvements.

As previously reported by Polygon, nearly all of the 85 workers had begun a 16-day partial work stoppage in late November before escalating to a full strike on Dec. 11 — a year after Vallejo had been purchased by investment firm ProA Capital for just under $53 million. In the days leading up to this announcement, CGT works council president Patricia Pérez described the alleged actions of Vallejo management over the last year in an article first published in Catalan by Poder Popular and commissioned for English translation by Rascal News.

According to Pérez, the alleged conditions at the Vallejo factory were not only dangerous, but not in compliance with Spanish law. In addition to a lack of employee showers (a requirement for companies which handle dangerous chemicals) and machinery in disrepair, Pérez claimed that panels from the factory ceiling were often broken and falling, allowing rain to fall on the factory floor. The translation describes an alleged “authoritarian” work environment, with unreasonable expectations for worker productivity that led to CGT filing a lawsuit against Vallejo management. Pérez also claimed that the company’s safety protocols are “biased” and portray “victim[s] of harassment as the perpetrator.” One employee, who filed a complaint against the company, was allegedly fired three days later on the grounds of “low productivity.”

Pérez told Poder Popular that the labor actions had pushed Vallejo management to “set aside any discussions of productivity” and begin “genuine negotiations.” Though those initial wage propositions were presented as “minimal” in the Poder Popular article, the final agreements announced in the CGT social post include: a salary increase of up to €3000 per year, a social paternity package of €500 for the birth of a child, with €200 education allowance for each child below 25 years of age — an amount which must be multiplied by 1.5 for single-parent families.

This victory follows multiple years of ongoing labor actions across sectors, including the currently ongoing SAG-AFTRA Voice Actors strike, the Amazon Teamsters strike, and the Starbucks Workers United strike.

Vallejo is a company that makes acrylic paint commonly used for hobby painting like warhammer miniatures and such.

seeing the workers win an agreement from a strike is always heartwarming to see

Super excited to see this!

I got very little done last night 'cause I only had a couple hours and I wasn't in a hurry, but I got the arms assembled! I have to prime them soon and also figure out what color I'm painting the inner frame, traditionally I've liked a mix of bronze and black lacquer

Finally got back to my painting station after having had surgery a couple weeks ago. Painted this Votann friend since it was last month’s mini of the month and I love Votann. So no pressure to do it right. It actually came out decently. A little messier than I would normally want it to be, but we got there.

Might be a bit before I paint again though cause I swelled up real bad while I was painting this. Hopefully not too terribly long.

Don’t cross a picket line!

Now to spend the rest of eternity painting them. Going Oops! All Aspect Warriors (plus some warlocks/farseers, purely because the models were cool). Mostly 3rd party, though the Striking Scorpions are GW because they were on sale (though where the FUCK is Karandras, GW)? The minis missing arms are the exarchs, as I'm going to magnetize all their options.

Timed the third party order pretty badly considering I missed the refresh on Swooping Hawks and Fire Dragons by like 2 months lmao. Though that said, the 3rd party models are a bit cheaper (~$100 for 10 Warriors + Exarch + Phoenix Lord, compared to $170 for GW), and it's really easy to repose resin models with a heat gun. Also, while I'm not sure if the other Aspects are/will be the same, I'm not a fan of how the torsos and legs are all locked together for the Scorpions, as it means that both my Exarchs will have identical poses...

Bonus Psychic Space Lenin in the back.
