I've asked Reddit for ideas on similar topics before, and you all have never failed to provide much better ideas than my initial thoughts.

My ideas:

"Wrong (city name)!"

"Ma, I swear I put (city name) in the GPS!"

Keep in mind, these two cities are 1100 miles apart, and there will be a multi in each direction (A->B and B->A not just one cache).

This post is not to discuss the cache itself. If you think it's stupid, so be it, but don't bother commenting because I already hid the caches.

Hello dear cachers, I have been a geocacher for several years now. I mainly cache when travelling or on excursions. I usually cache alone. What makes it so appealing for me is the search itself. Furthermore, of course, great hiding places, discovering places worth seeing through caches or beautifully designed caches. I don't care about the number of finds or FTF hunts. For me, it's the moment that counts.

Over the years, I have experienced some strange behaviour that I don't understand. For example, there are some cachers in my neighbourhood who take the FTF hunt very seriously. They seem almost boastful in their log texts. They emphasise without humour or irony that they have dropped everything to be the first finder. They constantly mention that they sped off in their car when the mail arrived. If they were (only) second or even third, it often becomes very absurd. Then they justify themselves and explain why they didn't make it. They emphasise that they still saw the previous cacher. It was very close. Or it is mentioned in the log text that it was a team FTF because they joined in when the other person found the cache. Sometimes I also read accusations and insinuations from some people that things weren't done properly etc. Why are some people so unrelaxed about it? Who can you seriously impress with FTF?

The next thing I don't understand is fake logs. A friend of mine has a cache. She regularly deletes logs from people who are not in the guestbook. What's the point of faking a find? Isn't it about the search? About the joy of the find?

Then something else curious. In my area, a team always goes on a search. Everyone logs with the same copy and paste log. I often find that alone rude towards the cache owners. Especially when a lot of work and effort has gone into it. But now it gets even weirder. The cachers write in the logs that they were travelling with 15 people. One part, for example, on the coast and the other group inland. Together we would have found over 300 caches today. What? They weren't all there but everyone logs the cache? Is it just me who doesn't understand? What's the benefit? It's similar to the fake logs.

What are such cachers actually interested in? Is it to have fun with the hobby or to show off their find numbers or the number of FTFs in their log texts and profiles?

I also find it mean when caches are destroyed through impatience and careless behaviour.

Sorry for the rant. How do you see it? What is important to you when caching? What do you find strange about other cachers?

So I’m at this work conference today, all dressed up (heels, dress, makeup, the whole professional look). During lunch, I figured I’d sneak out for a quick geocaching break. I had spotted five caches just within a 2km round walk from the venue.

Well… what I didn’t do was check the terrain ratings. At all.

Cue me, twenty minutes later, halfway up a tree in high heels, balancing while trying not to rip my stockings (spoiler: I failed). Second cache was another climb. Third one required ”a tool” (very long stick), which I could only retrieve by wading through some small bushes. Fourth was finally an easy one and well, fifth I just gave up, my dress would not have survived another climb.

Now I’m back at the venue, picking leaves out of my hair, one stocking torn, and pretending I just “went for a walk to clear my head.” But hey, I got 4 out of 5 caches, and honestly, no regrets.

What’s your worst (or best?) unprepared geocaching adventure?

Just received an email from Google:

Mobiltal, LLC is increasing the price of your subscription ‘Geooh GO (Geooh GO Enhanced)’ from $1.59/6 months to $6.49/6 months starting on 19 July 2025.

As I've barely touched the app it's a good reminder to chase up on those subscription services you aren't using.

I bought the app and subscribed back when they had Android Auto integration which didn't pan out and the functionality was removed. For the subscription price I never bothered cancelling, but a 400% price increase is a motivator.

Edit: I now realise the date is relating to my personal billing period (two month's notice) so others may already know about this.

Hello, some time ago I thought it would be a good idea to celebrate 25 years of GC by adding the 25 YEARS logo to your profile or cache description. However, after I searched the internet for this graphic in .svg format I found nothing and let the topic go. This week I was looking at the DevTools feature in Chrome and noticed that with it there is the ability to download images from various websites. So I thought I would take advantage of that. But after a while I found out that it's not that simple. I had to put the XML code into Notepad, then into Photope and finally it was Canva. But it worked! Now on my profile on GC and in the description of my cache there is a beautiful logo of 25 years. And I thought I would share my idea with you. I am attaching on this post the logo in JPG and in the link underneath an attachment to Google drive with a .svg file

I hope you will take advantage of this and like me add it to your profile or cache description.

To be honest... I'm an old school geocacher. I started this hobby when smartphones didn't exist. A world with handhelds from Palm, connected to separate bluetooth GPS receivers. 😎

Geocaching has been handled as a secret, only few people had little knowledge about it. Nonetheless... the built quality of cache containers in average was much higher than today.

Less destruction from noobs, everyone gave care so the next cacher still got a healthy cache. Lost places to explore. Beautiful spots nobody knows (beside geocachers). You felt like a special agent with a good kept secret.

Today... is different. 😒

So... all long-time-cachers out there: What are you missing today about the old times? A time, where you have been one single human of a small group of people with a hobby that felt like an urban legend? 🤭

Let's remember the good ol' past.

Man, what a wonderful hobby :)

I have heard about geocaching for years, but I never tried it as other hobbies I had took up my time. And I wanted to try it with my daughter, so I waited till she was old enough (five and a half). So a month ago, during Easter trip I decided to try it. We found our first cache, a standard PET bottle next to a ferry landing on a fjord coast (Norway). We climbed a bit, searched a bit, and damn how hyped we were when we found it! And honestly, I was hyped more than she was haha!

And I have been searching for caches almost every day since then, both alone and with my family.

One month later I have found around 60 of them. I have rediscovered the joy of being outdoors. Now walking outside has a sense of goal and adventure to it. I have to admit I got really bored with walking anywhere over the years. I even found a way to combine this with my other hobby (nature photography).

During that month I have spent time wandering the forests, searching dusty rusty undersides of bridges, attempted to climb trees, found hidden cabins, met and talked to some awesome people outdoors (an elderly man who stood and listened to birds - we started talking about things for a little while just because we both were in a same spot at the same time).

And I have quite a few nice spots for my own caches, which I have found during two decades of wandering and looking for photo motifs!

My favorite thing is avenging DNF's. The sense of achievement is wonderful. At the moment I and a colleague are working on a difficulty 4.5 cache near our workplace. I recruited him and he got hooked as well haha. We have spent about three hours so far looking for that cache, and I absolutely love it. Still haven't found it!

Anyway, just wanted to share some appreciation!

So something I run into occasionally is micro or bolt containers rusted/cross threaded and near impossible to open. I don't have the pockets to always have 2 sets of lockjaws and maybe wd40 on me... So I will take a photo holding the container log it as found and saying in the log I have a photo of me with the container if the co would like proof.

So is this fair game?

I know that letterbox hybrid caches are a thing but I feel like letterboxing itself, the still active predecessor to Geocaching, has been largely forgotten in comparison. I go onto the official websites (letterboxing.org and Atlas Quest) and see that many of the letterboxes have been unfound for years, with many of the users being inactive for just as long. I feel like many more people would get the chance to do letterboxing if they worked together with Geocaching. Or maybe we should contact the people who hide letterboxes and ask if they would like to put their letterboxes on the Geocaching map. Anybody here familiar with letterboxing who would like to see this happen?
