I visited Lübeck over the weekend and immediately started a Lübeck campaign. Did you travel to a country or city and then decided to play them?

R5: The Papal States can be Empire ranked while in the HRE so long as the have the Tier 3 reform Kingdom of God. Being allied with the HRE Emperor also prevents The Shadow Kingdom debuffs. This, plus a usually strong ally in the emperor, makes being part of the HRE more beneficial than being outside it.

Rather oddly, 3 of the 4 Tier 10 reforms, those being "Clerical Commission", "Theocratic Democracy", and "Constitutional Theocracy", give you the Government Mechanic "Unlocks the ability to change Government Ranks", which, for some reason, demotes you from an Empire rank to a Duchy, despite the Kingdom of God reform fixing you to an Empire rank. As such, you lose all the Empire rank benefits such as the added Gov. Cap which can result in some serious debuffs (as shown in the pictures). As per HRE mechanics, it is impossible to upgrade your rank, leaving you stuck as a duchy.

The 4th reform in Tier 10, "Divine Guidance" only gives Max. Absolution +15, which is useless pre-Age of Absolutism. The other 3 give a mix of National Unrest, Diplomatic Relations and Years of Separatism buffs, making them more attractive, were it not for the de-Government Ranking.

I highly doubt the dev team intended for this, but I find it odd no one noticed this issue.

Seriously. This game is a lot different when you're not running DLCs. No drilling, estates are difficult to keep happy, and a lot of mechanics for countries vacant. It's a wild experience, though I don't know if it's necessarily a bad one?

Example: I have a friend with a very, very, very bad computer, and the only way they could play EU4 was without any mods and with Fast Universalis turned on. It was a fun experience, though we only played for a few years. I'd like to hear other people's experiences.

1 - start a new game until Burgundy is friendly (or at least not rivaled to you) and immediately royal marry/ally if available

2 - Ally any other applicable nations that would help against France (Savoy, Aragon, Austria etc)

3 - Sell Maine to Provence and immediately start spying on them, but don’t take the 100 years war mission

4 - Crush Ireland, before war of the roses if possible, and release PU with parliament decision

5 - Attack Provence for Maine and Anjou, and give as much to burgundy as possible (preferably leave Provence in their non-HRE French province, or just release Bar there)

6 - Attack France with allies with a standard conquest CB, but once the war is won give burgundy as much as they are willing to take, preferably in the south so that they don’t desire more of your land, and repeat upon end of truce until you get the BI

7 - While waiting for truce with France to end, continue to attack any of your vulnerable neighbors (Castile, Norway, etc)

8 - Get BI, and then take 100 years war mission and PU France l

9 - force acts of union debate and have all of Burgundy and France without a ton of AE

I have recently started playing Aragon. I am trying to get the Mare Nostrum achievement. My first attempt failed, I am now trying a second time.

But regardless of me being bad, this country is actually OP if you have all the DLC's. You can no-CB Byzantium early, then get Castile thanks to the Iberian Wedding, and then you have a mission that allows you to get a PU casus belli against PORTUGAL. Portugal is usually only allied with England, so you have a trivial war against them. These two PU's, combined with Naples, allow you to create a massive vassal swarm.

Aragon is close to Italy and is located in Iberia, so both Renessaince and Colonialism should spread without devving your provinces up. Global Trade may also be easy. This makes it tremendously easier compared to something like Poland, who have to dev their provinces up.

Last but not least, Aragon allows you to colonize the New World WITHOUT having to take Explo/Expan ideas. Some 5 to 6 years ago, when I played this game on earlier patches and without most of the DLC's, your PU's wouldn't colonize, but this has apparently been changed. Now, as Aragon, you are going to have Portugal and Castile colonizing massive swaths of land in the New World FOR YOU, FOR FREE. And once you annex them, you get all of these colonies, and if they are above 9 provinces, you presumably also get extra merchants.

With all that in mind, can we say Aragon is MASSIVELY more powerful than Castile? Why do you think people still talk more about Castile as one of the most powerful countries in the game and not Aragon?
