Playing as France, was fighting Spain for Naples. Noticed I could vassalize Spain, so decided why not. Had enough AE reduction to only get them and Portugal in a coalition. So now the second great power vassalized the third great power. Might be dumb with how big they are, but honestly I don't care, I couldn't resist. Lol

Not my first run as the Aztecs but I don't have hundreds of hour on my account either and it's my first time encountering this. As you can see the year is 1536, and I had a weird setup where the whole of Europe barely colonized. No mayoman in sight, when usually I see them close to my shores by something like the beginning of the 16th century ? Denmark in Florida is pretty new, one of his two territories is still a colony in progress. Also I wrote Spain, but it's Castille. So as you can see Portugal didn't even colonize the whole of the Caraibbean area yet, and I even managed to snatch Aruba and Habana simply because they didn't settle yet. Castille has 3 territories in the Colombian region, there was literally no one in the Gulf of Mexico up until the last few years with Denmark and Great Britain is chilling its beers up there, they are settling Massachusetts just now.

Down there in South America it wasn't really better (that's where I started with to try and find them exploring with a conquistador since they were nowhere in sight, just exploring a bit our continent but not much), honestly I thought the Europeans got nuked or something because I just couldn't find anyone. First I discovered where the Portugese way down there, their implation in Maranhao is pretty fresh too and I found them around Pernanbumco. I was working my way down there just to contact and Castille happened to settle next to me in the process.

Here I've had to hop from Meso America to set up a colony next to Cumana just to be able to FINALLY reform my religion. It's the first time I had to do that (conquered Muisca on the way), first I moved to prepare for my American Frontier to grab a maximum of land, but well I couldn't find any invader around I had to change my plan. Motherfucking Portugal was sailing around in the Caribbean sea but refused to settle on my coast and I couldn't settle the islands yet to get the reform, because I didn't have the technology because I couldn't reform x)

Right now I'm the second great power with barely doing anything, I don't understand what happened, any input people ? Castille is weak enough to not even be there.

Turned off Terra Incognita, Europe looks like this and Portugal just created its colonial subject in La Plata, but they are nowhere near colonizing beyond that.

Portugal is waging war in North Africa, got 4 morcels of Ivory Coast, justs starting to settle Sao Tomé now and that's it in Africa. Castille got just a little bit of Moroccan soil and jumped from Tenerife, that's it.

Just so you know I've NEVER made a European campaign so I'm not used to what Europe should usually look like at this point, but I guess Castille still being there along Aragon is already weird isn't it ? Interested if you can tell me what's up, I've had barely any challenge this time to get till here and I don't get why... I'm playing on normal difficulty.

Close-up of Europe because I guess it's useful, as IRA2799 say Britanny is there, no signs of Holland or the Netherlands I guess, they got gulped by Friesland. Scotland is living its best life in the Inverness Highlands, last time run they were on a one way trip to the Shetland, another one they were holding half the North American colonies so I don't know what's their usual route, getting integrated I guess.

Was hoping to start a bit of a theory-crafting discussion about the best possible military you can build in EU4. I want to constrain it a bit, as I’m talking more about “what is the best possible military that can be sustained throughout the game” as opposed to “what is the best possible military you can have at any given point”. Therefore, I want to exclude temporary modifiers from this. In addition, to avoid making this a convoluted mess, one reasonable culture swap is allowed. By reasonable I mean a nearby cukture from the starting point. For example: Poland into Prussian culture, mamluks into Persian culture, Sweden into a Russian culture, etc. obviously some discretion comes with this, but I just want to avoid the whole “culture swap into Moroccan for the mission, then culture swap into Prussian, then culture swap into X country” stuff that just isn’t feasible for a typical campaign. This is also not purely a modifier stacking discussion, some people prefer discipline, some prefer morale, some prefer sheer quantity. For the purposes of this, all should be considered. I’d also include government reforms (on any tiers), government forms, special units, religious buffs, and indirect buffs (for example: max effect of absolutism increasing discipline or max military policies) but I am less well versed in those areas.

My choices-

  1. Gotland for the 5% discipline mission —> Hanseatic League for the 5% discipline —> culture swap to Prussia (keep the ideas)—> Germany
  2. Mamluks —> Egypt (for western units) —> Persia (keep the ideas) —> Zoroastrian Persia for monument
  3. Morocco (for mission) —> culture swap into Spain
  4. Some insane cav build involving Poland or Siam
  5. High American Aztec/Inca

I did some research and couldn't find a clear answer. Some link it to the independence of the Spanish colonies, others to Napoleon's death, and still others to the Greek uprisings in the Ottoman Empire. What is the real reason?
