I have a decent library of videos (12ish tbs). Is it worth converting them from 1080p h.264 to h.265 to save space? Will there be much of a quality loss? Would I be better off just sticking with what I have and using 265 going forward?

Title says it all. Obviously using other chat apps is preferable but there's so much old shit on there that I care about...

Edit: by "convenient" I mean I don't want a time- & resource-intensive suggestion, e.g. "create a tasker workflow that scrolls through your chats and highlights & copies every message individually to save it". It should be achievable over a weekend, provided I don't fuck anything up.

Hey everyone,

I recently graduated with an engineering degree and want to back up my uni Onedrive, before I loose access. I’ve got around 500GB of notes, textbooks, and reference materials—some of which are basically lost media at this point (can’t find them online anymore).

I don’t plan to access these files often, maybe once every 4–5 years if that, but I really want to preserve them long-term in case I ever need them for reference or professional development.

So I’m looking for recommendations on the best long-term offline storage solution.

Just an FYI to anyone it may affect.

I was just told by a rep from support that they discontinued their advanced RMA replacement service warranty replacements. I have a drive that is failing and can't have the server down for weeks while I wait for the RMA to make it's way to their repair center and send a replacement.

Hello all,

I currently use the following for downloading data/profiles from various social media platforms:

  • 4kstogram (Instagram)
  • 4ktokkit (TikTok)
  • Various online sites like VidBurner, etc. (Snapchat)
  • yt-dlp (YouTube and various video sites)
  • 4k Video Downloader Plus (YouTube and various video sites)
  • Browser extensions like HLS Downloader, Video DownloadHelper

Almost all of the programs or sites I use are good at first but have become unreliable or useless recently:

  • 4kstogram: lost support and no longer updates but you can still use it
    • Big problem is its out of date, not supported, and can ban your IG account since it uses the IG API
    • I got the professional license back in the day
  • 4ktokit: Works well...when it works
    • Has become unreliable lately
    • I have the personal license
  • Various online sites: Work when they can and then I move to the next site when the first site doesn't work
  • yt-dlp: Works very well, still need to get used to the commands, etc. but has its limits before your IP gets blocked for downloading too much at once. Can download social media videos too like TikTok but one video at a time not whole profiles like 4ktokkit
  • 4k Video Downloader Plus: Limited to 10 videos a day but has playlist functions similar to yt-dlp
    • Honestly, I still have this program to download videos in a pinch but its not my main, just a backup
  • Browser extensions: HLS Downloader has limited support and works when it can but caches a lot of data. Video DownloadHelper has a 2 hour limit after your first download but works well

I plan on keeping yt-dlp, 4k Video Downloader Plus (until its useless) but I'd like to replace the other 4k products I have with something (hopefully) exactly the same as 4kstogram and 4ktokkit in terms of features and past reliability.

  • For IG and TikTok: Need to have ability to download entire profiles, single posts (of any form), export posts (4kstogram does this for IG)
  • For Snapchat: View each new Snap and download them individually. If I can download all the latest Snaps at once, that would be super helpfully.
  • When needed download Facebook, etc.
  • Each solution needs to have the ability to update the latest profile by downloading the latest post

If anyone could recommend a solution or multiple solutions to accomplish this so I can replace the 4k products that would be super helpful whether its software, Github programs, scripts, etc. I would like to avoid online services like sites since again a site might work for now but not work or be shut down rather quickly.

After almost 24 years of running Nexus Mods, the time has come for me to step back from the day-to-day management of the site. This isn't a decision I've made lightly - far from it - but one I think is in both my and the community's best interests.

So yes, the ownership of Nexus Mods has changed hands, but I want to be clear, this isn't some corporate "exit" or a backroom deal. This is me doing something I probably should've done years ago: taking care of myself. Reclaiming some headspace. And finally letting go of the idea that I have to do everything and be responsible for everything myself.

One of the most famous games in Major League Baseball during the 2023 season was the "reverse boycott" game. Oakland A's fans packed the stadium during a low attendance season after threats of relocation loomed all year.

MLB keeps archives of all their games from the past few seasons online, with this being one of the few (if not the only?) removed from their database.

Thanks in part to this sub, I already archived the full game.

Over the past few months I've collected over a 100,000 digital comics, mostly from Marvel and DC + some others, I'll soon move onto Image, Dark Horse and IDW. It has kind of become a hobby, I think by the end of the year I'll have 150,000+ at least, am I crazy? If yes, is there anyone else who is as crazy as me?

Recently wanted to move from cloud to local storage. Recently used 1fichier which gives storage for around 1$/TB with no egress which is really cheap i think but since i already have a really good home server i thought might as well go local. This should be even cheaper probably and i dont really like 1fichiers UI. I wanted to buy recertified drives but serverpartdeals has more than 100 bucks for shipping + border crossing fees and so on so it isnt worth it at all. Do you guys have any sites you can recommend. I live in Germany if it helps.

I'm surprised how much it's going up over the last 5 years. You would think prices decrease over time

TL;DR: A bug with Google Drive sync ended up deleting hundreds of my local files.

About a week ago, I was trying to move some game screencaps to a folder where I put pictures of my characters from MMOs and other games (outfits/gear, character creator sliders, etc.), and I was shocked to see that the folder was completely empty. I hadn't really looked at that folder in a while so I had no idea since when it had been that way, but I thought it must have been at least over a month, because the deleted files weren't in Google Drive's online Trash folder that automatically empties every 30 days, either.

At first I thought I had just massively screwed up somehow, and accidentally deleted the contents of the folder without noticing at some point. I gave up on trying to find/recover my files and sadly went to bed after putting the new screencaps in the folder. However, when I checked the folder again the next day, I realized that the new screencaps from the day before were ALSO gone. To make a long story short, after a bunch of experimentation, I realized that the issue was with Google Drive's file backup and sync.

I'm still not sure why, but for some reason, something had gone wrong with that one specific folder, such that every time Google Drive attempted to sync the contents of it, something would go wrong. And once something went wrong, the files would get automatically deleted on Google Drive's end. But the worst part is that after the files got deleted on Google Drive's end, for some ungodly reason, that change would also sync back and delete my LOCAL files as well. This continued to happen even after renaming and moving the folder.

I recorded a clip of what this looks like in practice. Anything put in that folder would get silently deleted once the file sync "completes". It isn't present in my Windows Recycle Bin, but it IS present in the online Google Drive Trash Folder. The only clue is a pop-up notification from Google Drive that disappears after a few seconds, saying that there was an issue with the file sync. I often have Do Not Disturb enabled on my PC so that I don't get pop-up notifications while I'm playing games or whatever, so I probably missed the notification the first time that this occurred, and my files got permanently deleted from the online Trash after a month. It also seems that there was some kind of naming/location conflict or something, because those notifications would reference the folder's old name from before I moved and renamed it for testing.

I contacted Google One Support and they were about as helpful as you might expect, such asking me approximately when the files had been deleted, as if I could tell them exactly when their service had started silently nuking my files in the background. They offered to try a data recovery, but in the end the files were not recovered, probably because it's been too long since they got deleted. I still don't know what the cause was. Maybe it's because I did some folder restructuring and renaming a few months ago, and those changes did not properly sync up with Drive. Regardless, I think it's absolutely ridiculous that a backup and sync service can end up deleting your local files if something goes wrong with the syncing process.

As a result, I have lost hundreds of pictures, and years' worth of memories across various games. I guess I should just consider myself lucky that it wasn't anything truly essential that got deleted, but suffice it to say that I no longer trust Google Drive with any of my files, and I will be unsubscribing from the service immediately. I definitely do not recommend the service to anyone who doesn't want to worry about their backup service arbitrarily deleting their local files.

On that note, does anyone have any recommendations for a different, more reliable cloud storage/backup service that WON'T nuke my files? I was thinking of looking at OneDrive. I do also have periodic FreeFileSync local backups on an external hard drive, but that backup had long since been overwritten with the version where my files had been deleted. I will probably set up another FreeFileSync job so that I have a monthly backup as an additional safety measure in addition to the mirroring I had been doing every few days.

I recently downloaded a specific torrent of Beavis and Butthead after realizing what's available on streaming doesn't have a lot of the original music videos and some episodes. The only place to find the original non-special edition of Star Wars is online. Classic Looney Tunes aren't streaming anymore. I'm sure there are also plenty of leaks and censored news media that would be worth archiving. Is there anything you recommend people go out of their way to backup? Does a list exist somewhere with list of essential torrents or downloads like this?

Is bit rot a real concern for data stored on 24/7 spinning hard drives, as well as for data on external hard drives kept on shelves for years?
