Welcome

Hello everyone, welcome to another issue of the webzine B-side Gaming. It has been a month since the last one, and I have gathered once again lots of content to read. Doing these once a month is much more work than I thought (and the interest in these is a bit low for now), so I think I will be switching to irregular intervals between issues. Maybe even do small ones from time to time, like only news roundups. But for now, let us focus on this one. Since it's a lot of stuff, I will be linking again to my https://write.as/ so I can fit everything. Posting content in the comments that I tried initially last time did not work out well because of the character limit that comments have. Finally, I wanted to ask if there is any interest in having these in a downloadable format. At the moment, I have md files for each issue on my hard drive. There are many apps that can read md files, like the Moon Reader+ on Android. But I could also convert them into PDFs if that is preferred. I would have to check where I can host them, but I think I will find something. Maybe on Itch.io.

Enjoy reading.

The Alters is an ambitious sci-fi tale that successfully marries several game genres with an interesting plot to deliver a standout experience unlike any other. Supporting all the exploration and base management is a beating emotional heart to this game that makes you eager to push forward and see what will happen next.
Pros

  • Well-written, engaging story
  • Blends multiple gameplay genres together near-seamlessly
  • Satisfying base-building and management sim elements
  • Narrative decisions carry real weight
  • Genuinely funny and weird at times despite its serious core plot

Cons

  • Combat gameplay is fairly basic
  • Management sim gameplay might not be complex enough for hardcore survival lovers

Adobe Flash was accessible to beginners and turned the web into an indie game publishing venue, but had severe performance and security problems and did not survive the 2010s. Flashpoint Archive is an online repository of the staggering number of games and animations that used to run in the browser—and otherwise require translation to other languages to run at all on contemporary operating systems. It's a revival of an earlier project, now handed over to new maintainers.

An upcoming indie game with a recently launched demo looks like a dystopian Zelda for pacifists, requiring players to beat nothing but their drum.

Gameplay-wise, Ancestral Harvest promises a mixture of exploration, environmental puzzles, and combat—a formula that might appeal to The Legend of Zelda fans. One of its distinct twists lies in its pacifist approach to combat, as the shaman protagonist is primarily beating his drum instead of enemies, creating rhythms that heal rather than kill. Gameplay footage on Ancestral Harvest's Steam page suggests there may be minor exceptions to this philosophy, including a scene where the shaman drops a large boulder on an enemy—though the act is clearly portrayed as non-lethal.

REKINDLE YOUR CHILDHOOD WIT

A UNIQUE AESTHETIC
TARSIERS Studios have created an immersive world of great subtlety and outstanding sound design. Navigate through detailed landscapes, disturbingly familiar places, and beautifully rendered scenery.
The soundtrack ranges from quiet ambient pieces during the exploration sequences to industrial, chaotic and nightmarish compositions during intense chases. The result is surreal and ethereal while remaining familiar – like the visual universe of Little Nightmares.

A dystopian document thriller.
The award-winning, critically-acclaimed border inspector game.

The communist state of Arstotzka has just ended a 6-year war with neighboring Kolechia and reclaimed its rightful half of the border town, Grestin.

Your job as immigration inspector is to control the flow of people entering the Arstotzkan side of Grestin from Kolechia. Among the throngs of immigrants and visitors looking for work are hidden smugglers, spies, and terrorists.

Using only the documents provided by travelers and the Ministry of Admission's primitive inspect, search, and fingerprint systems you must decide who can enter Arstotzka and who will be turned away or arrested.
