There's been an influx of content surrounding lemmy here. Some of it is open ended:

  • "What kinds of things from reddit would you like to see Lemmy avoid as the user base grows?"
  • "Lemmy, what do you call users of Lemmy?"

And these are a-ok! There's also been a lot of questions like

  • "How do I block a user?"
  • "How do I join a community on a different instance"

These aren't open ended (at least, relatively). They are objective based, and just need a resolution, rather than discussion. These sort of questions are more relevant to [email protected].

I know there's also questions like "What are you guys doing when there’s multiple communities for the same thing across instances?". I'm inclined to let those stay, there is lots of opportunity for discussion. It's a game of discretion from a moderation perspective, but I assume most can easily guess what is cold hard support.

At least from me, moderation of support posts has been sporadic at best, despite the long standing rule. I will begin redirecting these questions to [email protected], however I'm of course willing to listen to the community here if that's not what is wanted, as well as other feedback.

edit: support posts will now be removed, not locked

Peridot is an expert in gem development. She could correlate factors in Amethyst's hole with her body just from a glance. I understand her not displaying this power with Steven, because he's human and she doesn't understand that. But if she had met Rose Quartz, would she have been able to tell something was funky with the lie that she was just a quartz? Would she have been able to tell she was a diamond?

Things look bleach And every decision I make gets harder. I should work out to feel better. But what would make it easier just tell someone

It's happened again, I've come back from a walk in the (light) rain and the left shoe of my current pair has just sprung a leak. This seems to be part of an annoying trend over the past several years, where after 2 to 5 months of buying a new pair and wearing them about daily at a primarily office job, the left shoe will develop a leak. The right shoe always emerges unscathed. I'll always avoid puddles if I can help it, so it seems as though the water just gradually seeps in as I walk. If I can get back home quickly, I try to dry them out, but sometimes they develop a mildewy smell and it's just never the same again.

I have a few theories, but none really convince me:

  • I walk fast, am left leg dominant, and my left foot is ever so slightly larger than the right. Maybe more strain on the left shoe? The sole does end up slightly more worn than the right.
  • But the same shoe size still comfortably fits both, so is there even a solution to be found?
  • People travel on the right where I live, maybe there's an asymmetry of the walkways?
  • I'm cheaping out and can't justify buying shoes over $80. In half of the cases, I notice the sole starting to separate from the upper part. But again, why the left in particular and why only these past few years?
  • Or I'm meant to wear heavy boots. The only kinds of shoes that have escaped this fate in recent years have been my snow boots and steel-toe boots, which I wear almost daily in the winter.

Would be interested to hear any similar stories or better reasons from those more knowledgeable about shoes and shoe defects than I am.

This might seem as counter intuitive, as there are folks that hijack ideas for a living, But hey, F*IT; lets hear your craziest plots you can concoct. We'll be the judge of them.

I'm down for a good laugh.

Hi all,

I like programming and do a lot of hobby projects. But I don't really do web development, or android, which seems to be what most work are about.

I like making desktop applications, computational projects, etc. i also like problems where I can solve/automate tasks using programming. I have like 100 projects in GitHub now, and I love contributing to open source community. But it sometimes makes me feel like I could be using that time to do things that could make money instead of working on projects that noone will use.

I'm looking for small jobs, independent tasks I could do for minor income. But if it's in python or rust, I am open to a bit larger projects.

I'm not depressed (at the moment, well maybe a little), just feeling philosophical.

Edit: the idea of this came to me because I was pondering why people fight so hard to beat diseases and live a few more years. What are they planning to do? Why exert effort just to be here longer when you don't have a reason?

Just why?

Edit Edit: it appears that existentialism is the philosophy of the day

I'm just asking, let's do it without outright lies, as if everything will be fine. I am very interested to read your sincere answers. You can write to me personally if you want.

Had read about them recently when looking up about bookmarklets:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Userscript

Which userscript manager do you use? What are your opinions/advice on security of using them?

Also, are there other similar things like bookmarklets and userscripts that regular people can start off fast?

Are there any lemmy communities or resouces(wikis, forums, youtube channels etc) that are on the topic of simple/beginner-friendly automation and customisation?

Thanks in advance

Good, trusted sites where I can hire front-end developers and designers?

I have this project that I need help with its front-end. Due to some reasons, I am not willing to go to LinkedIn, Upwork and Fiverr. What are some sites where I can just DM developers. Escrow is not necessary but would be appreciated.

Suggestions? I am not tech oriented.

Have you ever had a job or gone for an interview at a workplace you realised was a scam? What tipped you off? When did you get out of it?

Any language, explain what it means if it's not English.

For example (as a non-native speaker) I've always liked the English word 'unprecedented', mostly in the context of fiction. Especially if it paints some entity to be really mystical or wondrous or it's own never before seen order of magnitude in any way.

Recently I switched from Apple Music to Spotify free/Navidrome. I am moving my library to Navidrome slowly. I have done a similar thing in the past as well.

I noticed that both times, as well as trying out new speakers, the first song I listened to was In the End by Linkin Park, followed by their latest album.

What is yours?

Edit: Holy Shit! I was not expecting so many replies. It is not possible for me to reply to everyone right away. I will listen to each of your first songs and reply to everyone.

It’s actually like the title asks; What does everyone here do when you can’t sleep and are wide awake besides being on phone?

So let’s say it’s in the middle of the night and you are unable to sleep. You have to keep things soundless due to family or partner.

Trying to get the phone usage significantly lower when being in bed but it feels like nothing can replace the ‘easiness of mindlessly scrolling’.

Trump is probably on the list, so he has to protect that. The Democrats had it during their entire presidency; even if they didn't want turmoil during their time in office, they could have released it after their presidential defeat and before Trump took office.

As a queer person (agender) with a conservative dad, I don’t get why he says he wants to go back to the 1950s. What was so special back then besides his reasoning that times were simpler? I feel like it would be harder for me then as a queer person.

I get that anything is worth whatever someone is willing to pay for it. That's besides the point. My point is, beyond speculation, what do crypto coins represent?

I also understand that the value of the US dollar is being questioned almost as much without the backing of gold.

But what I really want to know is what is at the foundation level of Bitcoin that people are buying into?

I have a basic understanding of the blockchain, etc. I sold 1BTC in 2017 for $1200 when I thought that was as high as it would go. At this point, at over $100kUSD and rising steadily, what is the $ limit and what is that limit based upon? I thought it was based on the value of mining to check transactions but this seems... not worth $100k to me.

I've been thinking, the only tangible value I personally see in Bitcoin, because it's not really being used as legitimate currency, is for criminals. By now, there must be trillions of dollars in BTC acquired by criminals holding corporations hostage. When you've got people like Trump involved (either explicitly or by way of manipulation) with an executive order to establish a crypto czar, this suggests to me that he's creating pathways for bad actors to more effectively gain more wealth. These are the people who are most excited in Bitcoin, beyond speculation.

I mean, there's little to nothing on the up and up with crypto, right? It's a scam. Right?

Please, factual answers only. I'm looking for someone to dispel my speculation with genuine economics of the matter.
