It goes without saying that capitalism sucks and corporations suck. I don’t have loyalty to any “brand”. But I do care about me and my comrades being able to afford to live.

There’s that phrase that “it’s expensive to be poor”, which I think is very true. When you’re poor, you can only afford the cheapest commodities. These inevitably break, so you have to spend more money on a replacement.

I’m trying to break out of this cycle myself as much as possible. Instead of buying the cheapest replacement, I’m trying to save up my money to buy a replacement that will last. Unfortunately, researching this is hard. There’s so much astroturfing and “sponsored content”. So I figured I’d ask my fellow hexbears, what products do you know of are made in a way that they will last and actually cost less than buying replacements? There’s a few suggestions I can offer:

I used to work in a pretty solid outdoor gear store, and I was really impressed with the Deuter backpacks. They were always really durable and cheaper than Osprey. I have one I bought in 2007 and I still use it regularly today.

I own a Casio G-Shock watch. The “squares” are usually relatively affordable. The bands and batteries can be swapped out. I’m pretty tough on mine and it still looks mint. I do expect I’ll be wearing mine for a very long time. Or if you don’t want to spend money the F-91W is like $10 and still works well even though it’s not ruggedized. Worn by Bin Laden, too.

Something in the ideal category of durable and cheap are Sungait sunglasses. They’re like $15-$20 each and have UV400 protection. Mine have lasted a while and have handled a lot of being thrown around

As a parent, we have some Hape toys our kids beat up and they stay together well. My wife bought some Primary dot com clothes thinking they would last but they don’t seem any better than the super cheap clothes at Walmart or Target we normally buy.

Should we allow non-Hexbear Prime users to access c/goodposting? I really enjoy c/goodposting. It is honestly the best community on Hexbear, next to c/bitcoin. But the entry fee of $9.99 per month makes its user count rather small. Maybe the mods could offer free trials for Hexbear Prime?

Also, I have been really happy with my Hexbear Gold upgrade. I loved the fact that I got a gift basket from the mod team.

The important thing is that they are not "addictive" or have (a lot of) ads. I can recommend GCompris, SuperTuxKart and TowerJumper.

I have work I need to do but I find myself scrolling here and on reddit-logo for hours at a time. It feels paralyzing but also its hard to stop. Not like reading about Lolitics* makes me feel good so why am I addicted to it 🙃

  • I was gonna correct that but it works. LOLitics, because everything is fucked so hard you just gotta laugh...

"Mercury is the only metallic element that is known to be liquid at room temperature."

Uh aktually, gallium melts at 29.7646 °C/85.5763 °F, which isn't even that hot.

Got to know of them recently. They seem very cool.

I especially like this one that shows Id links. Useful while sharing wikipedia links:

And

This one which helps to use text fragments:

Discliamer: Be careful with copy-pasting bookmarklets into your browser. Only do so if you trust it.

Which all bookmarklets do you use, find useful?
Please share them.

Are there similar easy things that most people sort of easily have access to? I think Libreoffice's/Excel's record macro function would be useful for people too.

Are there any communities for similar things, sort-of like beginner automation?

Thanks in advance.

I came across this old thread on reddit-logo. The question brings out the core Conservative belief that some people are lazy or "worthless" and "why should I pay for lazy people" or "why should I have to work for someone else to live off my labor?"

Many, many people on this thread say outright that people who they deem "lazy" don't deserve food or shelter or anything a human needs to live.

Is there a good counter to this talking point? It's pretty disgusting TBH being confronted with this. I know it's what they really believe but it still stings to read it out over and over again.

I don't understand how some people can think humans don't have an inherent right to exist. Not very "pro-life" of these people.

"Lazy" is an opinion and our society is built to treat people who aren't helping a Capitalist make profit or become a Capitalist themselves like they're burdens on society.

Life isn't fair, it never has and it never will be. Maybe some of your money goes to help a person who doesn't "work as hard as you"? There's also people who are born millionaires, people who have investments paying them for no work, people who win lotteries and jackpots or marry into wealth and never have to lift a finger again.

Forcing people to work in order to live doesn't sound fair to me. It sounds like slavery with extra steps. What kind of freedom do we truly have if we can't choose to withold our labor or check out of the system altogether?

I'm struggling a little mentally with feeling guilt around my failing job search. Technically I'm working on building three income streams, maybe four, but it feels like "failure" because I'm not making enough just yet to cover all bills. It's not for a lack of trying but there's ti.es where I have no energy to do much and it makes me feel terrible. This part of Conservatism always drove me up a wall. Hopefully some of you have good ways to fight against it.

i think most of us already know that you cannot blindly apply soviet or chinese socialism to our respective states without considering the underlying reasons for reform and opening up and the rapid industrialisation of the soviet union. you can't just create a sez in fucking malmo and expect to become a socialist paradise in a month, this is obvious. once a socialist state or multiple pop up in europe or north america, in the near future, the first thing that would happen is, most likely, a complete blockade. the remaining capitalist states in europe or nato if thats still around would either invade you or sink any ships sailing into your ports. any semblance of socialism in the west, especially in the core, would be seen as an existential threat (correctly so, actually). and you dont have any manufacturing capacity at home and definenetly not enough to resist the combined military effort of the west. like, what the fuck do you do once you, as a deindustrialized state with an aging population, have your trade cut off and have to fight a war without any nearby allies? maybe the billions of climate refugees can aid any reindustrialization effort if thats on the table, but thats really not gonna be on the table as intervention would happens as soon as you take control, you just dont have the time. this is ignoring any russian or chinese interference or an unforseeable change in the global economic system within 10 or 20 years, of course. that could change a lot and would be desirable. but i cant and we cant predict exactly how that would change the equation here, so i dont know how i could consider that in the scenario.

I was entirely expecting this to happen so they could wage another forever war. I'm thankful they haven't done it yet, but given they have a habit of lying and starting invasions, I'm a bit surprised it hasn't happened.

I hope I'm not getting to conspiracy-brained here.

I've found myself confronted by a peculiar dilemma. Typically, my superior reasoning renders the need for counsel unnecessary. Yet, in this instance, I am perplexed.

My partner declared the day a “cleaning day.” This oppressive social construct which reinforces the fetishism of cleanliness is obviously problematic on its own, but it doesn't stop there. She handed me a brush, pictured, and departed, leaving me to dwell on what just happened.

Libman

LIB MAN

Two words that betray the very essence of my identity; I am neither a “liberal” nor a “man." What to do? How would you retaliate?

(Same details as my last post, but with a different question in the title because getting responses about how people get through bullying was the point. Last title is too specific.)

I'm curious to know even if your way isn't what I'm trying.

It's awful to get dehumanized when you're the most down.

I have found that my way through this will be grief instead of anger. Anger is okay, but it can be left at the point of my initial response. Grief is a way of loving, and I am trying to love myself through this hurt. I want to explore this hurt. But I'm not really sure how.

Thankfully the main person I have in mind while writing this is gone from my life, so I don't need to hold onto anger so much.

On my daily walk, this little friend was laying on his dead mother (killed by a car, it was awful doggirl-cry )

It was able to walk a bit around when I came back with a box, it is Sunday tomorrow so all vets or refuges are closed. Any tips? I gave a little bit of water next to it.

It's awful I got kicked when I was most down by someone who obessively pretended they had respect for my ethnicity.

Dear comrades, recently I have been stuck in interpersonal conflict in my political life. This has made one of my main avenues for empowerment and dealing with the weight of the world less effective. As a consequence, I have had recurring urges to overeat. It has negatively impacted my health and energy beyond the general lethargy of mild depression.

Does anyone have any strategies or advice for compassionately handling these impulses? My wallet and body will surely thank you.
