I get that you probably save a bit of fuel and that will add up over the huge amount of driving you do, but it seems incredibly dangerous. What don't I understand here?

Thanks :)

I fully understand backup in layers. Ideally you want an onsite backup, and an offsite backup. But for the onsite... do you even try to protect it from fire?

If not, doesn't that mean all your "fire" protection is really just the one online layer?

And if you do, where do you get such a thing. I have looked around, I can't find anything that actually lists hard drives as protected. Like sentry safe has "data protection" safes, but they say this

"CDs, DVDs, memory sticks and USB drives up to 1700°F (927°C) for all FPW base models. These products are NOT intended to protect computer floppy or 21⁄4” diskettes, cartridges, tapes, audio or video cassettes, or photo negatives. "

That doesn't seem to include HDD or SSD. So I started wondering if anyone actually tries to protect their onsite backup from fire.

I've been browsing antique jewelry a lot lately and wonder about this. With jewelry specifically I think about hair, coral, pearls.

Then that extends out to animal skins, bones, human relics, etc.

What makes one thing gross but the other okay?

For example, getting hired onto a job, forming a community, and to a lesser degree forming platonic or romantic relationships

We want to do a Workshop about memes during a weekend. Like what are memes ? How to do memes? And also a little bit about meme history. We are around for some time and thought we have a good amount of knowledge. But we also realized that memes are very subjective and even though there are some events we both had in our minds (e.g. fuck spez) there a lot that only one of us remembered. So what are your must haves for such a presentation? Or what are your fun facts about memes?

Besides the obvious answer of making money, or rather, how would you do it as an 8 year old? What else would you do?

For masculine identifying folks, what were the things you did (or had happen to you) that you feel helped you transition into adulthood and find fulfilling community?

Statistics suggest that a large number of men feel isolated, unvalued by society, and dysfunctional, but it's not 100%.

Hello Lemmy, I would like to know how do you all read email.

  • What email clients (or web UI) do you use? And on what platform?
  • What is something you don't like from the client?
  • What is something you like from the client?
  • What is something you don't like from the email service?
  • What is something you like from the email service?.
  • Is there a feature you would like your client implemented?
  • Do you have any particular method or workflow of going through and extensive inbox?

If you have any other comment it would be appreciated as well.

On my computer I use the web interface and on my phone I use Thunderbird. One thing I do is to delete or archive any message that does not need any action, and it has been a blessing, my emails are so much easier to go through.

That's all, thank you in advance.

For me it's Peggy from Mad Men. At first I thought she was going to be an annoyance but half way through the first season I've grown to absolutely love her!

Just want to make sure I have that right. He spoke up so now they are making shit up to try and defame him? Do I have this bullshit right?

I did get messed up by some anxiety and have these thoughts rolling through my head so I'll leave it at cosmic horror warning.

spoilerI'm not religious but I have thoughts about experiencing consciousness and what it is. I say that consciousness is independent of memory because we forget, clearly dependent on our physical body, etc. generally I do say that we don't know consciousness so maybe it can be reconstructed (in the can't rule out the possibility way)

So I can see scenarios were my conscious could pop into existence without my memories after I die (as I'm writing this I realized that's nothing to fear).

I am trying to adopt healthier mindset of looking at everything in life as a quest, new things are a call to action, and that it's okay if everything I do amounts to little in x number of years (worked out okay for ozymandias, right?).

Im probably just rambling because my life has got boring and monotonous along with actual fear of American politics.

For example, I don't like Will Ferrell in his typical roles. Oh they just drive me batty.

But. I do love Stranger Than Fiction. It's such a cozy movie.

What are your wackiest ideas for a "universal" controller layout that would appeal to the fans of the Xbox, Nintendo, and PS layouts? You certainly can't pick one of the three, that would be lazy and frankly unfair for the other two layouts. It's got to be something that everyone agrees on, something different!

I've got a few ideas: NSEW (the cardinal directions), RGBA (colours, also transparent button could be cool...), or maybe CMYK (printer ink colours for ease of printing)

What are your ideas for the universal controller layout?

I support free and open source software (FOSS) like VLC, Qbittorrent, LibreOffice, Gimp...

But why do people say that it's as secure or more secure than closed source software?

From what I understand, closed source software don't disclose their code.

If you want to see the source code of Photoshop, you actually need to work for Adobe. Otherwise, you need to be some kind of freaking retro-engineering expert.

But open source has their code available to the entire world on websites like Github or Gitlab.

Isn't that actually also helping hackers?
