Shlorpians are plants, and plants absorb nutrients from the ground so they essentially eat the floor.

I love how many details of Shlorpian biology seem random at first but actually connect to the common theme of being plants. It's the same thing with the replicants being grown in a pot from a piece of the adukts body, mushroom parasites, and being reborn into trees.
