MODERATORS

Hello users of hexbear after some discussion we mainly wanted to get your thoughts on the two pinned megathreads, one general and one news.

We've noticed that the news mega has basically become the general mega and the general mega has kinda slowed. Some are thinking that it might be time to tell people to stop posting random shit to the news mega because some appreciate the ever so slightly more serious, focused tone of the news mega

As of now there is not much of a standard for comments however we wanted to discuss with you regarding making a change. Where the news megathread is for discussion on current events and their history/implications for future while the general megathread is for commenting on one's life, interests, or for shit-posting.

This would result in the news megathread being more heavily moderated to actively remove comments that are a better fit for the general megathread or off topic.

Please comment with any thoughts, opinions, comments, questions, or concerns.

Is it caused by the thread size blowing up over palestine and will it return to norm without intervention when this is over? Hard to say.

Intervention might be better. I can't see a risk with intervening whereas not doing so risks death of the general mega.

Sometimes the general mega of the day isn't pinned and I can't find it, which is when I (sometimes accidentally) shitpost on the news mega if it is pinned.

But I'd prefer to shitpost on the general mega, just keep it pinned nice and easy for sleepi like myself, ty.

Sometimes the daily mega isn't in a comm I'm subbed to so I think the news mega is the daily and shitpost in there by accident. If this is happening to other people, maybe we should have a comm just for daily megas to be crossposted to, so we can subscribe to that and see all the megas no matter where they are. Or maybe crosspost it into Main or something?

Retvrn. Ban hard, ban often. Moderate me daddy.

No but really the news mega ought to be a more concise/in-depth/curated conversation, it's bad enough we talk shit in the comments of a general mega commemorating past events, we oughtn't do the same with current ones too. I'm guilty of it too

I mainly like the idea of clarifying the purpose of each thread by moderating them harder. I think one small issue with the general mega is that if it updates daily and the old ones get locked after 24 hours, there's sometimes a period of about half an hour where the pinned mega is locked and the new one isn't pinned yet. So it would be nice if the pinning + locking was automated and there was less daily mega downtime.

I'm for making it a clear rule and allowing people to self moderate.

[–] [email protected] 18 points 2 years ago (2 children)

I thought we weren't suppose to post random stuff in the world events 72 thread?

[–] [email protected] 14 points 2 years ago* (last edited 2 years ago)

I've done it once or twice by accident. I imagine almost all random comments are by accident but so many people do it by accident it looks like it's on purpose

[–] [email protected] 12 points 2 years ago* (last edited 2 years ago)

Many do. Reporting doesn’t do anything so it’s de facto regardless of de jure.

[–] [email protected] 17 points 2 years ago

Thank you for opening the discussion.

Keeping things tidy would make it easier for users to curate their site experience. There is a time for shitposting (always), but there is also a place for shitposting (not where we try and make sense of an ongoing genocide).

Just my thoughts on the matter. I’ll be going to the local Wendy’s to share them there next, anyone want anything?

[–] [email protected] 16 points 2 years ago

I didn't know there were two different megathreads

[–] [email protected] 16 points 2 years ago

Just bring back main posting

[–] [email protected] 16 points 2 years ago

I could see the News Mega's top level comments being expected to conform to a more stringent moderation policy to try to stay on purpose with comments further down the chain being allowed to drift. But I don't have the time or energy to follow the Mega's so my opinion probably shouldn't get much weight.

[–] [email protected] 15 points 2 years ago (5 children)

I would love to see a lot of the megathreads energy get sent over to matapocos.dog, but I also understand why that won't happen.

[–] [email protected] 16 points 2 years ago (1 children)

Matapacos.dog has like 200 accounts vs. the 25,000 here.

I don't really participate in either but overall my thoughts on splintering things is that with the tiny user base we have, splintering things is a way to decrease engagement rather than increase it, which will further shrink the user base rather than increase it.

That's just my gut though I have no evidence for it.

Main.

I don't really understand the megas, what exactly are they for?

[–] [email protected] 17 points 2 years ago

Every time you post the cabal of cultural neomarxists collect a portion of your essence. Once we have enough we will attempt to resurrect the body of Marx himself.

[–] [email protected] 16 points 2 years ago

Once we have collect enough we get a giga thread.

I’m training in poetry rn so I won’t have regrets about my ability to communicate what gets posted there.

I miss the dean-frown dean-neutral dean-smile votes too but let's be honest, after what I imagine is hours counting almost identical heads in a hundreds-responses thread like some sort of cyberpunk copyist monk, Carcosa probably never wants to do it again.

[–] [email protected] 14 points 2 years ago (1 children)

We should keep doing it as a bit though

You cant control the random shit, it just happens organically

I generally lurk news and post in the general mega and I'd prefer to keep it that way. Maybe regulate the news meta more strictly. I'd hate to lose people making shitposts about news in the news mega but maybe it should be kept to replies or something. I'm not heavily invested either way.

please don't change the news mega. perhaps the general thread should be close to weekly? maybe not? I came to hexbear mostly for the new mega, but I see the value in the general megathread and they do not provide the same thing to the community, but I think both are essential outgrowths of hexbear and how it has developed over its life

Agree with keeping non-news discussion out of the news mega
