Please pronounce his name wrong to make the title pun work better.

Anyway - Javier Milei, a caricature of a libertarian invented deep in the Hexbear Bit Factory, has won the Argentinian general election; and with a 12 point lead over Massa, it wasn't even particularly close. There are several analogies for this situation - Trump beating Hillary, Bolsonaro winning in 2018, or the alternate universe where Le Pen beat Macron. Massa is not a great guy. The last couple years have been difficult for Argentina, facing massive inflation and the same general economic downturns that are happening everywhere.

Milei is an... interesting person. To name just a couple things going on in his deeply bizarre life, he has a very special relationship with his sister, and an even more special relationship with his mastiff, Conan. When Conan died in 2017, he was so utterly distraught that he had him cloned into four new dogs, named Murray, Milton, Robert, and Lucas, for his economist idols. And he uses mediums to speak to his dead dog. This is probably the closest we're ever going to get to having a dog be president of a country.

Milei wants to essentially collapse the economy even harder. Playing off the general public sentiment of "dollar = good, peso = bad", he has vowed to make the national currency of Argentina the US dollar, thus eagerly giving a massive amount of control over the Argentinian economy directly to America. He wants to take a chainsaw to the status quo, cut off trade with communist countries like China, and demolish the Central Bank. Will Argentinian capitalists and the Senate let him do this? Probably not. What happens with their membership in BRICS+? Who knows. Where does Peronism go from here? Who can say.

But he still won, and will now be president. I suppose that every dog has its day.

Friendly reminder: when commenting about a news event, especially something that just happened, please provide a source of some kind. While ideally this would be on nitter or archived, any source is preferable to none at all given.

Resources For Understanding The War

Defense Politics Asia's youtube channel and their map. Their youtube channel has substantially diminished in quality but the map is still useful.

Moon of Alabama, which tends to have interesting analysis. Avoid the comment section.

Understanding War and the Saker: reactionary sources that have occasional insights on the war.

Alexander Mercouris, who does daily videos on the conflict. While he is a reactionary and surrounds himself with likeminded people, his daily update videos are relatively brainworm-free and good if you don't want to follow Russian telegram channels to get news. He also co-hosts The Duran, which is more explicitly conservative, racist, sexist, transphobic, anti-communist, etc when guests are invited on, but is just about tolerable when it's just the two of them if you want a little more analysis.

On the ground: Patrick Lancaster, an independent and very good journalist reporting in the warzone on the separatists' side.

Unedited videos of Russian/Ukrainian press conferences and speeches.

Telegram Channels

Again, CW for anti-LGBT and racist, sexist, etc speech, as well as combat footage.

Pro-Russian

https://t.me/aleksandr_skif ~ DPR's former Defense Minister and Colonel in the DPR's forces. Russian language.

https://t.me/Slavyangrad ~ A few different pro-Russian people gather frequent content for this channel (~100 posts per day), some socialist, but all socially reactionary. If you can only tolerate using one Russian telegram channel, I would recommend this one.

https://t.me/s/levigodman ~ Does daily update posts.

https://t.me/patricklancasternewstoday ~ Patrick Lancaster's telegram channel.

https://t.me/gonzowarr ~ A big Russian commentator.

https://t.me/rybar ~ One of, if not the, biggest Russian telegram channels focussing on the war out there. Actually quite balanced, maybe even pessimistic about Russia. Produces interesting and useful maps.

https://t.me/epoddubny ~ Russian language.

https://t.me/boris_rozhin ~ Russian language.

https://t.me/mod_russia_en ~ Russian Ministry of Defense. Does daily, if rather bland updates on the number of Ukrainians killed, etc. The figures appear to be approximately accurate; if you want, reduce all numbers by 25% as a 'propaganda tax', if you don't believe them. Does not cover everything, for obvious reasons, and virtually never details Russian losses.

https://t.me/UkraineHumanRightsAbuses ~ Pro-Russian, documents abuses that Ukraine commits.

Pro-Ukraine

Almost every Western media outlet.

https://discord.gg/projectowl ~ Pro-Ukrainian OSINT Discord.

https://t.me/ice_inii ~ Alleged Ukrainian account with a rather cynical take on the entire thing.

Mad dog Israel - bombing all of Gaza, attacking hospitals in Gaza, and storming cities in the West Bank.

14m ago (19.24 EST)

In breaking news, we’re seeing reports that the IDF is “storming” the city of Hebron in the West Bank. The Hamas-affiliated Shehab news agency and Al Jazeera report that IDF forces have stormed the city, with Shehab also reporting arrests. The Guardian has not verified these reports independently.

“Israeli occupation forces storm the city of Hebron in the south of the West Bank and launch a campaign of raids and arrests,” Al Jazeera reports.

The AP has this recent report from the West Bank:

When Israeli warplanes swooped over the Gaza Strip following Hamas militants’ deadly attack on southern Israel, Palestinians say a different kind of war took hold in the occupied West Bank.

Overnight, the territory was closed off. Towns were raided, curfews imposed, teenagers arrested, detainees beaten, and villages stormed by Jewish vigilantes.

With the world’s attention on Gaza and the humanitarian crisis there, the violence of war has also erupted in the West Bank. Israeli settler attacks have surged at an unprecedented rate, according to the United Nations. The escalation has spread fear, deepened despair, and robbed Palestinians of their livelihoods, their homes and, in some cases, their lives.

Before the Hamas assault, 2023 already was the deadliest year for Palestinians in the West Bank in over two decades, with 250 Palestinians killed by Israeli fire, most during military operations.

Over these six weeks of war, Israeli security forces have killed another 206 Palestinians, the Palestinian Health Ministry said, the result of a rise in army raids backed by airstrikes and Palestinian militant attacks.

Via Al Jazeera daily live thread

Hamas says will delay release of second round of captives

Hamas’s armed wing says it will delay the release of the second batch of captives, accusing Israel of not abiding by the terms of the truce deal.

In a statement on the messaging app Telegram, the Qassam Brigades said Israel should allow aid trucks to enter the northern Gaza Strip and to adhere to the “criteria” that was agreed upon – namely seniority – to release the Palestinian prisoners.

Edit -

From video livestream claims Israel fired tear gas canisters at Palestinian prisoner reunion.

You could share this with libs.

Israel has used the October 7 attack by Hamas to destroy many norms. The biggest ones have gotten the most notice, those that are part of genocide and ethnic cleansing. But there's more, and it's going to have profound effects on warfare going forward. Israel has intentionally targeted civilians, hospitals, ambulances, schools, journalists, UN shelters, humanitarian workers, and civilian infrastructure of all kinds. They've done these things before but never on this scale and never so openly.

Israel has made no effort to hide these acts. On the contrary, they have tried to justify them as intentional acts. They've been supported in this by the US and EU. In the future, other countries will do the same and opposition will only reinforce the already widely held view that there are no rules, just what the US will allow its friends and forbid others.

The US and Israel have struck what could be a mortal blow to the fledgling effort to establish international laws that protect civilians. Congratulations.

I edited it a tiny bit. I took out the hash tags and created actual paragraphs.

Honest Q - if Argentina wants to piggyback amerikkka currency, what do they think of our reckless endless warmongering and 30+ Trillion in debt? Have they not paid attention to the cost of living in the US or do they think we're all like Dynasty and the Beverly Hillbillies?

Like what do they think is the .appeal of an increasingly worthless currency of a failing empire? Do they think we'll bail them out? Have they seen Puerto Rico?

My friend is just out of frame, agreeing with me about Gaza too.

I was messaging with my Palestinian friend in Gaza before we went on air. He is lightly injured and things are tough but he thinks overall it is good because Gaza needs to be rid of Hamas.

Does anyone have any recent stats as far as Jewish American support of Israel? I keep seeing on here and some other spots that Israel is extremely controversial among American Jews and a large proportion don't support it, but that doesn't track with my own anecdotal experience. Every Jewish person that I know is ardently supportive of Israel and the Zionist project, talk about wanting to move there, etc. I am not Jewish so apologies if this comes off as disrespectful, not the intent.

NYT: Why I Am a Liberal

More than at any other time since World War II, liberalism is under siege. On the left, some people insist that liberalism is exhausted and dying and unable to handle the problems posed by entrenched inequalities, corporate power and environmental degradation. On the right, some people think that liberalism is responsible for the collapse of traditional values, rampant criminality, disrespect for authority and widespread immorality.

Fascists reject liberalism. So do populists who think that freedom is overrated. In ways large and small, antiliberalism is on the march. So is tyranny.

Many of the marchers misdescribe liberalism; they offer a caricature. Perhaps more than ever, there is an urgent need for a clear understanding of liberalism — of its core commitments, of its breadth, of its internal debates, of its evolving character, of its promise, of what it is and what it can be. Here is one attempt at an account, in the form of 34 sets of claims about liberalism.

Today's challenge is see how far you can get down this list before you have an aneurysm. I personally managed to get to point 18 before I had to stop:

Liberals abhor the idea that life or politics is a conflict between friends and enemies. They associate that idea with fascism and with Dachau and Auschwitz.

Sounds like Dublin was briefly in the cool zone. I'm having a rough time tracking down just what happened, but it sounds like someone was stabbed and reactionaries used it as an excuse to blame the Irish housing crisis on migrants.

The Committee to Protect Journalists has said that between October 7 and November 25 the number of journalists killed stood at:

  • 50 Palestinians

  • Four Israelis

  • Three Lebanese

The watchdog also said that 11 journalists were injured, three were missing and 19 were arrested.

I was watching a CNN vid and the narrator mentioned "Hostages Square" without defining it. Obviously I could guess it was in Tel Aviv and the general idea but that was it so I was forced to google.

Tel Aviv's Hostages Square, as the space in front of the Tel Aviv Museum of Art is now known, was filled with more than a dozen independent art exhibits — a giant, working sand clock, tiny birdhouses for each of the hostages, and an empty Shabbat table filled with homemade treats and crocheted stuffed animals.

I wonder when CNN stopped defining it and started to expect viewers to know what it is.

Fascist spy, who should have been shot after conviction, says families of people captured and imprisoned by Palestinian freedom fighters should themselves be imprisoned as those "hostages'" families are being used by the international community and by the Maki Communist Party of Israel as a weapon against the Israeli government in prosecuting its campaign of genocide against Gaza.

The hostages' families should have been jailed to shut them up, says former US citizen who was an Israeli spy

Seriously this dude should've been kicked to the ground and shot like an animal.

Смерть шпиoнам

Jonathan Pollard, a former US intelligence analyst imprisoned for spying for Israel, has called for hostages' families to be silenced and arrested.

See? Evil Fascist spy.

Pollard told Israeli media that the families of Israeli hostages should have been jailed to shut them up. He also said posters of the captives should never have been hung up.

"When Israel declared war, the first thing that the government should have done was declare a state of national emergency and told all the hostages: 'You will keep your mouth shut or we will shut them for you,'" Pollard said.

Evil man.

💥Freed spy Jonathan Pollard says families of Israeli hostages should have been jailed to shut them up and posters of the captives should never have been hung so as to allow Israel a free hand in prosecuting this war. pic.twitter.com/vxC9yk3dE3 — Noga Tarnopolsky נגה טרנופולסקי نوغا ترنوبولسكي💙 (@NTarnopolsky) November 23, 2023

He said the Israeli government should have prevented the hostages' families from "interfering" with their management of this war. He implied that the hostages' families were being "used by the international community" or "by our own leftists" as a weapon against the Israeli government.

"If that means imprisoning to silence certain members of the hostage families, then so be it — we're in a state of war."

"I was dead set against these 'kidnapped' posters because each one of them was a poison dart," said Pollard.

Pollard is a convicted spy who spent three decades in a North Carolina prison for providing top-secret information about the US to Israel.

Should've died in prison.

The former Navy intelligence officer — using his Top Secret and Sensitive Compartmented Information access to national defense information — provided Israel with thousands of pages of US intelligence on military and technical intelligence on the Soviet Union, Arab states, and Pakistan.

While one would assume the U.S would've already shared most of this info with Israel, one has to understand there's still a layer of cool pragmatic thought among the war ghouls in the DOD in regards to maintaining American supremacy - especially when it comes to not giving the rabid dog named Israel information it could use to trigger ww3 because it can't stop itself from biting everything around it. Like biden's dog funny enough.

Pollard's emigration to Israel in 2020 was the culmination of years of lobbying by the Israeli government to secure his release.

Should've put a bomb on his airplane so it would've taken him and Benny Mileikowsky out on the tarmac.

Some Israeli hostages are due to be released later today as a ceasefire between Israel and Hamas comes into effect. At least 50 of the roughly 240 hostages held by Hamas are set to be released in exchange for 150 Palestinian detainees over four days over four days.

[–] [email protected] 39 points 2 years ago* (last edited 2 years ago)

Hamas leader, Osama Hamdan:

Al-Qassam has decided to suspend the release of the second batch of prisoners, and there are communications to address the violations and end them

The violations committed by the occupation are related to the issue of (aid and fuel) trucks, in addition to gunfire and the ascension of martyrs
