Welcome to c/news! Please read the Hexbear Code of Conduct and remember... we're all comrades here.

Rules:

-- PLEASE KEEP POST TITLES INFORMATIVE --

-- Overly editorialized titles, particularly if they link to opinion pieces, may get your post removed. --

-- All posts must include a link to their source. Screenshots are fine IF you include the link in the post body. --

-- If you are citing a twitter post as news please include not just the twitter.com in your links but also nitter.net (or another Nitter instance). There is also a Firefox extension that can redirect Twitter links to a Nitter instance: https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/libredirect/ or archive them as you would any other reactionary source using e.g. https://archive.today/ . Twitter screenshots still need to be sourced or they will be removed --

-- Mass tagging comm moderators across multiple posts like a broken markov chain bot will result in a comm ban--

-- Repeated consecutive posting of reactionary sources, fake news, misleading / outdated news, false alarms over ghoul deaths, and/or shitposts will result in a comm ban.--

-- Neglecting to use content warnings or NSFW when dealing with disturbing content will be removed until in compliance. Users who are consecutively reported due to failing to use content warnings or NSFW tags when commenting on or posting disturbing content will result in the user being banned. --

-- Using April 1st as an excuse to post fake headlines, like the resurrection of Kissinger while he is still fortunately dead, will result in the poster being thrown in the gamer gulag and be sentenced to play and beat trashy mobile games like 'Raid: Shadow Legends' in order to be rehabilitated back into general society. --

If you have evidence of Israeli crimes and atrocities that you wish to preserve, there is a thread here in which to do so.

Sources on the fighting in Palestine against Israel. In general, CW for footage of battles, explosions, dead people, and so on:

UNRWA daily-ish reports on Israel's destruction and siege of Gaza and the West Bank.

English-language Palestinian Marxist-Leninist twitter account. Alt here.
English-language twitter account that collates news (and has automated posting when the person running it goes to sleep).
Arab-language twitter account with videos and images of fighting.
English-language (with some Arab retweets) Twitter account based in Lebanon.
English-language Palestinian Twitter account which reports on news from the Resistance Axis.

English-language PalestineResist telegram channel.
More telegram channels here for those interested.

Various sources that are covering the Ukraine conflict are also covering the one in Palestine, like Rybar.

The Country of the Week is still Palestine, though we will switch next week to a new country.

Here is the map of the Ukraine conflict, courtesy of Wikipedia.

The weekly (biweekly?) update is here.

Links and Stuff

The bulletins site is down.

Examples of Ukrainian Nazis and fascists

Examples of racism/euro-centrism during the Russia-Ukraine conflict

Add to the above list if you can.

Resources For Understanding The War

Defense Politics Asia's youtube channel and their map. Their youtube channel has substantially diminished in quality but the map is still useful.

Moon of Alabama, which tends to have interesting analysis. Avoid the comment section.

Understanding War and the Saker: reactionary sources that have occasional insights on the war.

Alexander Mercouris, who does daily videos on the conflict. While he is a reactionary and surrounds himself with likeminded people, his daily update videos are relatively brainworm-free and good if you don't want to follow Russian telegram channels to get news. He also co-hosts The Duran, which is more explicitly conservative, racist, sexist, transphobic, anti-communist, etc when guests are invited on, but is just about tolerable when it's just the two of them if you want a little more analysis.

On the ground: Patrick Lancaster, an independent and very good journalist reporting in the warzone on the separatists' side.

Unedited videos of Russian/Ukrainian press conferences and speeches.

Telegram Channels

Again, CW for anti-LGBT and racist, sexist, etc speech, as well as combat footage.

Pro-Russian

https://t.me/aleksandr_skif ~ DPR's former Defense Minister and Colonel in the DPR's forces. Russian language.

https://t.me/Slavyangrad ~ A few different pro-Russian people gather frequent content for this channel (~100 posts per day), some socialist, but all socially reactionary. If you can only tolerate using one Russian telegram channel, I would recommend this one.

https://t.me/s/levigodman ~ Does daily update posts.

https://t.me/patricklancasternewstoday ~ Patrick Lancaster's telegram channel.

https://t.me/gonzowarr ~ A big Russian commentator.

https://t.me/rybar ~ One of, if not the, biggest Russian telegram channels focussing on the war out there. Actually quite balanced, maybe even pessimistic about Russia. Produces interesting and useful maps.

https://t.me/epoddubny ~ Russian language.

https://t.me/boris_rozhin ~ Russian language.

https://t.me/mod_russia_en ~ Russian Ministry of Defense. Does daily, if rather bland updates on the number of Ukrainians killed, etc. The figures appear to be approximately accurate; if you want, reduce all numbers by 25% as a 'propaganda tax', if you don't believe them. Does not cover everything, for obvious reasons, and virtually never details Russian losses.

https://t.me/UkraineHumanRightsAbuses ~ Pro-Russian, documents abuses that Ukraine commits.

Pro-Ukraine

Almost every Western media outlet.

https://discord.gg/projectowl ~ Pro-Ukrainian OSINT Discord.

https://t.me/ice_inii ~ Alleged Ukrainian account with a rather cynical take on the entire thing.

Last week's discussion post.

Navy ends tradition of Chinese laundrymen on warships over spying fears (Telegraph, 23rd of October, 2023)

The Navy is ditching its century-old tradition of having Chinese servants on warships amid fears they could be spying.

Hundreds of Chinese laundrymen have worked on British ships since the 1930s with most from Hong Kong but will now be replaced by Nepalese Gurkhas.

The Sun reported that the Ministry of Defence had made the decision over fears Beijing could obtain secret information by threatening the loved ones of laundrymen.

The paper said that three Chinese nationals were barred from joining HMS Queen Elizabeth, the Navy’s flagship aircraft carrier, on her strike group voyage to the contested South China Sea. A fourth Chinese laundryman was dismissed this month after 39 years of washing and pressing sailors’ uniforms and officers’ white tablecloths because his family lives in Hong Kong.

The tradition began as a local custom early in the last century and was formalised through contracts with various Hong Kong companies.

Pentagon says 900 additional US troops heading to Middle East, but will not go to Israel

The troops are heading to the Middle East as part of “efforts to deter a broader conflict and further bolster us force protection capabilities”, Pentagon spokesperson Brigadier General Patrick Ryder told a news briefing.

The troops include “forces that have been on prepared to deploy orders and which are deploying from the continental United States,” Ryder said, without giving an exact location of where the troops would deploy.

“I can confirm that they are not going to Israel,” he said.

Ryder said that US troops had been targeted 12 times at bases in Iraq and four times in Syria in the past week.

Slovakia announces the end of military aid to Ukraine

rest of articleSlovakia has until now been a staunch supporter of Kyiv since Russia invaded in February last year, donating arms and opening its borders for refugees fleeing the war.

Slovakia has announced the end of military aid to Ukraine. A country of 5.5 million people which shares a border with Ukraine, Slovakia has until now been a staunch supporter of Kyiv since Russia invaded in February last year, donating arms and opening its borders for refugees fleeing the war.

Slovakia’s president swore in a new government Wednesday, led by a former populist prime minister Robert Fico.

There are concerns the victory of Fico's Smer, or Direction, Party in September's election could mark a dramatic turnaround in the country’s foreign policy and strain a fragile unity in the European Union and NATO.

He opposes EU sanctions on Russia, questions whether Ukraine can force out the invading Russian troops and wants to block Ukraine from joining NATO.

Guatemala is trying to pull another Arbenz, except this guy is more like Bernie than Arbenz. The US is actually supportive of the president-elect this time around. It's probably because his foreign policy isn't that much different from Boric's in Chile. Very anti-Russia, Nicaragua, and Venezuela. He seems to want more trade with China though while still wishing to recognize Taiwan.

Lula has also thrown in his support. The guy may not be the most radical, but it's nice to see a somewhat left-wing candidate in our country get some international support over the right-wing.

Large crowds have gathered in central London for a demonstration in support of the Palestinian people, with tens of thousands expected to take to the streets. A pro-Palestinian rally in London last week drew an estimated 100,000 people, and similar numbers are expected today.

Demonstrations are also planned today in Manchester, England, and in Glasgow.

🇻🇪🇬🇾Venezuela proposes the creation of a state to annex the area in dispute with Guyana

The National Electoral Council (CNE) of Venezuela announced this Monday the questions that citizens will answer in the consultative referendum on December 3.

Venezuelans will decide whether or not they agree “with the creation of the Guayana Esequiba state” and that “an accelerated plan be developed for the comprehensive care of the current and future population of that territory that includes, among others, the granting of citizenship and Venezuelan identity card,” indicated the president of the CNE, Elvis Amoroso.

Liberals are so fucking unhinged. Now they’re calling leftists opposed to Zionism “tankies “

Hopefully someone comes up with a good retort that catches fire and exposes it for the meaningless term it is. A westoid in the imperial core calling someone a tankie like it means shit lmfao

The final sentence: "WhatsApp and iMessage are not delivering, and when using the internet to call, it just rings endlessly."

"I don’t know if they are safe or not": Family members left in dark after communications go down in Gaza

People who have family in Gaza tell CNN they have not been able to contact them after communications went down in the enclave following heavy airstrikes.

Jawwal, the Palestinian telecom company that provides mobile service to the Gaza Strip released a statement Friday night saying "the intense bombardment in the past hour has resulted in the destruction of all remaining international routes connecting Gaza with the outside world" leading to a "complete interruption of telecommunications services".

Said Alhayek, 42, from Las Vegas, said he has not been able to reach his family in Gaza.

“It’s like sitting in the dark not knowing what is going to hit you, I can’t reach them on any medium of communication at this point, I can’t even know if they are okay or not, I don’t know if they are safe or not," Alhayek said. "Also, the fact that they cut off communication, makes us feel as though they are about to do something terrible.” Adli Anwar, 57, who is living in Ottowa, Canada, also said he has no way of communicating with his family.

“I can’t get anything — about three hours ago, we lost all communications, no phones, no internet, nothing. Before it would connect, about 80% of the time, and now it’s zero percent. It doesn’t get to the international line," Anwar said.

CNN tried calling several contacts with Gaza numbers over the last hour, both over international calling and over WhatsApp. On the international calls, they either go straight to voicemail or an automated message says “the number you are calling is currently unreachable. Please try again later.”

WhatsApp and iMessage are not delivering, and when using the internet to call, it just rings endlessly.

The amount of water for all uses in Gaza has plunged to 3 liters per person/day. Like three liters. Two bottles of pop. For an entire day. By comparison, a single apartment tower uses 100K-200K liters per day.

At what point are people going to respond to pro-Israeli rallies with actual fedposting
