Welcome to /c/AmA

Want a scheduled AMA announced ahead of time? Contact Awoo directly at the bottom of this sidebar.

Please stick to one of either three post types:

A standard Ask Me Anything post.

A request post -- (What is the format and why should I make a request post?)

A gauging interest post -- (What is this?)

What is an AmA?

AmA’s or “Ask Me Anything” began on the old internet, originally AOL chatrooms, later followed by Slashdot. They are crowdsourced interviews where the interviewee first makes a post describing who they are and what they do. Commenters then leave questions and can vote on other questions according to which they would like to see answered.

The interviewee can then go through and reply to the questions they find interesting, and easily see those questions the internet is dying to have the answer too. Questions will be a mixture of radical, serious and lighthearted resulting in the kind of interview you won’t get elsewhere.

What Topics Are Allowed?

Anyone can do an Ask Me Anything. The topic of the AmA must meet the rules below, and in some cases you must provide proof of the claims you are making. Ask Me Anything topics fall into two categories:

Something that plays a central role in your life. The prime example of this is a person's job; posts about someone's occupation are almost always allowed. A person's topic should be something that they know thoroughly and is important to them; this gives them more to discuss and a more thorough background in the field.

A truly interesting and unique event. An example would be "I organised a protest against x." It's an activity that doesn't play a central role in someone's life but is so uncommon that many users would not have experiences of their own to relate to it.

AmAs should NOT be about:

Mutual-Aid and Crowd Funding - AmA submitters that include any aid or funding campaign must be eligible for an AmA without the campaign for it to be allowed. Additionally, the focus of the AmA must not be the campaign -- those posts would be more appropriate in the mutual-aid community. Posts about suicide.

Other Restrictions:

Giveaways are not permitted on AmA. Contests and giveaways already running on a third party site prior to the AmA are acceptable

Proof

Proof in the case of public figures or orgs may be a social media post on an official account. For other topics it may be a proof image. This does not always have to be included in the post at the time of posting and it may be discussed with the moderators and provided privately. We will ALWAYS respect your complete privacy.

Hey JT, I'm thinking of starting a mental health channel or podcast from a leftist perspective. I would like to keep my identity secure to project me and my family if I start it. Any advice?

Also, thanks for the awesome work you do.

Hi JT, love your stuff! As someone who's getting into computer software (still early on), I wanted to ask what you or anyone else think I could do in the field to advance socialist ideals/practices. I want to focus on VR as that's a field I've followed almost my whole life, and I've thought about using VR to maybe educate people on socialist history, like a VR movie about the Russian Revolution or an open-source social VR platform that caters to leftists. Idk though, so I'm here to learn. Thanks for reading!

There are lots of opportunities in software! One really cool one would be to get into theoretical economic planning models. Check out our Deprogram episode with Tomas Haerdin, it's a fascinating subject

Do you figure lumpenproletariat was replaced by police (for capitalists and otherwise)?

Hey JT love your channel, the recent episode on MMT was both a great primer on the subject while also discussing its limitations vis a vis socialism without outright disparaging it.

Question: do you think socialism can come to America as is geographically speaking? Or would some level of Balkanizing/dissolution have to occur first?

[–] [email protected] 14 points 2 years ago

I think the United States as we conceive of it has to disappear before socialism comes to the region. The US is simply too far gone and would rather die, or more likely try to kill everyone else, than allow socialism to win

Say you had a climate controlled greenhouse on Jupiter's moon Io. The greenhouse has no artificial light.

Is there enough light reflected off the surface of Jupiter to grow a houseplant? (Let's say a ficus.)

What is the timeline looking like in your opinion for when BRICS and dedollarization will begin to impact the US/NATO financial hegemony? Could the shift damage the fossil fuels industries significantly in these countries?

Hi JT, thanks for visiting us again, what are your thought on the Naxalites and the philippines maoist movements? are there any communist movement in the third world you are interested in?

[–] [email protected] 14 points 2 years ago

I'd defer to Marxist Paul on that one. I'm not super well-versed in Maoist stuff. I'm very interested in African socialism, there are a number of projects that seem to be growing there

Appreciate the work comrade, do you think other forms of media/audio-visual content would be effective in informing people?

I'm thinking of video games mostly, but perhaps interactive or experiential media broadly. I recently played a game called Tonight We Riot, which I enjoyed (and struggled with) and was picking up Game Dev again with Godot after the Unity stuff and this has been on my mind.

Thanks for the AMA!

[–] [email protected] 17 points 2 years ago

Absolutely! So many people who consider themselves "apolitical" play video games and subconsciously (or consciously, sometimes) absorb their messages. Very useful tool

Hi JT! Thank you for putting out the message of socialism so effectively and from a principled perspective!

Would you consider looking into (and possibly supporting) Chunka Luta's campaigns? This is a revolutionary project focused on building indigenous power that has connections to members of this platform. No need to actually reply to this comment because I don't want to put you on the spot! Just trying to get visibility.

I'm not personally associated with the org, just a fan. Theycurrently have a fundraising drive here.

Also @[email protected] (someone who is more involved) please let me know if you don't want this kind of visibility or ask, ha. I ideally would've talked to you first but totally lost track of time.

What's your favorite Star Trek?

[–] [email protected] 15 points 2 years ago (1 children)

Obviously I love TNG, but I've really been enjoying Voyager too. Still need to watch DS9. I tried that after TNG and it just looked so bad in comparison. I wish it would get the remastering treatment, but I understand that's basically impossible
