Welcome to /c/AmA

Want a scheduled AMA announced ahead of time? Contact Awoo directly at the bottom of this sidebar.

Please stick to one of either three post types:

A standard Ask Me Anything post.

A request post -- (What is the format and why should I make a request post?)

A gauging interest post -- (What is this?)

What is an AmA?

AmA’s or “Ask Me Anything” began on the old internet, originally AOL chatrooms, later followed by Slashdot. They are crowdsourced interviews where the interviewee first makes a post describing who they are and what they do. Commenters then leave questions and can vote on other questions according to which they would like to see answered.

The interviewee can then go through and reply to the questions they find interesting, and easily see those questions the internet is dying to have the answer too. Questions will be a mixture of radical, serious and lighthearted resulting in the kind of interview you won’t get elsewhere.

What Topics Are Allowed?

Anyone can do an Ask Me Anything. The topic of the AmA must meet the rules below, and in some cases you must provide proof of the claims you are making. Ask Me Anything topics fall into two categories:

Something that plays a central role in your life. The prime example of this is a person's job; posts about someone's occupation are almost always allowed. A person's topic should be something that they know thoroughly and is important to them; this gives them more to discuss and a more thorough background in the field.

A truly interesting and unique event. An example would be "I organised a protest against x." It's an activity that doesn't play a central role in someone's life but is so uncommon that many users would not have experiences of their own to relate to it.

AmAs should NOT be about:

Mutual-Aid and Crowd Funding - AmA submitters that include any aid or funding campaign must be eligible for an AmA without the campaign for it to be allowed. Additionally, the focus of the AmA must not be the campaign -- those posts would be more appropriate in the mutual-aid community. Posts about suicide.

Other Restrictions:

Giveaways are not permitted on AmA. Contests and giveaways already running on a third party site prior to the AmA are acceptable

Proof

Proof in the case of public figures or orgs may be a social media post on an official account. For other topics it may be a proof image. This does not always have to be included in the post at the time of posting and it may be discussed with the moderators and provided privately. We will ALWAYS respect your complete privacy.

Do you think American liberals in the next 10 years will come to an understanding that a left wing exists and it's broadly not them?

Do you think they'll continue to call us brainwashed/unrealistic or will they regard leftists as a legitimate political rival to contend with?

Thanks for doing this JT!

What are your thoughts on "Settlers: The Mythology of the White Proletariat" by J. Sakai?

The guys at Chapo Trap House & TrueAnon disparaged it as a political dead-end recommended by the 'very crazy people' that inhabit the 'very weird' American leftism and I would love to hear your take on this contentious book.

[–] [email protected] 37 points 2 years ago

I’ve heard mixed things about the book. It’s on my (very long) list of books to read. Not sure when I’ll be able to get to it. I will say the US leftism is indeed very weird and often counterproductive

Hi @[email protected] .

Thanks for doing another one of these.

I love The Deprogram podcast, have been listening since the beginning, and was a subscriber to all 3 respective youtube channels long before the podcast started. One thing that has kinda irked me to put it mildly, is that you guys sure do talk about food a lot. That in and of itself is no problem, but whenever it comes up, it's invariably talk about how great certain fast food chains are and specifically how tasty the animal meat they killed and commodified is, which to some of your vegan fans is disappointing and even legit nauseating at times. I know to most it's just humorous chitchat about something the three of you enjoy, and I get it, but I also know I'm not the only listener really put off by it.

I wouldn't presume to tell anyone what to talk about on their own podcast, but as a listener, I find myself consistently wishing you would seriously address leftist arguments for veganism and recognize the intersectional nature of socialism and non-human animal welfare. I remember Yugopnik saying some really positive things about veganism briefly in one of the livestreams (I can't find which one now) when asked about it but then shortly after, in a regular episode he's going off about how yummy veal is and even forgetting what animal it's made from. stalin-stressed

Do you think you could ever get some vegan comrades on the show to take you to task for your unexamined carnism? lol

I want to add, more for some of the readers than for JT. Since someone always says the thought terminating cliche, I realize there is no ethical consumption under capitalism, but most leftists recognize there is a spectrum.

Have you ever had any other weird interactions with the feds or police ever since the DHS knocked on your door for your ClA is a terrorist organization video?

Even stuff like suspecting your phones, computers, etc. are passively listening, watching, keylogged, etc., people following you or your family

[–] [email protected] 29 points 2 years ago

Not to my knowledge, which means either they're doing a good job or they just don't care to keep pestering some random YouTuber

Would you play Kor, an indie game made by @[email protected]?

It's a turn based combat rpg and beloved by hexbear users

[–] [email protected] 35 points 2 years ago (1 children)

I’ll give it a look! Haven’t had time to play many games recently between the baby and all my projects

What do you think of Chompsky?

He's like 3 people in one man: an anti-imperialist 'tankie' (See his views on the Khmer Rouge et modern-day China) , a liberal (his electoralism and anti-communism) , and an Anarchist (in philosophy)...

Btw, are mohawks cool? Cuz Dirty Owl said so...

What is your least favorite American city?

[–] [email protected] 31 points 2 years ago (1 children)

JT before you answer this question, consider Arlington, TX, a city of nearly 400,000 with no bus service.

Thanks for talking to us losers again lol. Greetings from South Africa. mandela

Just wondering what your thoughts are on dependency theory and/or world systems theory, and theorists such as the late Samir Amin. Is this kind of Marxism/Neo-Marxism a valid contribution and way of explaining how the world works, or is it revisionism of some sort?

Tell me about your Volvo project?

[–] [email protected] 32 points 2 years ago (3 children)

Gladly! It's a 1992 Volvo 240 wagon, minty clean in its original silver. I'm swapping a 6.0 LS into it with a 6-speed manual. Performance cam, totally rebuilt engine, new exhaust, all the little electrical gremlins of age sorted out, stepping up from the stock 14s to 18 inch wheels (haven't decided which yet, but maybe TE37s). Very excited. I'll probably wrap it in a deep metallic green and redo the interior with cognac leather and a modern infotainment system and sound
