On this day in 1978, United Steelworkers union workers in Sudbury, Ontario voted to go on strike to fight proposed layoffs and pay cuts. The strike was the longest in Canadian history until the record was broken by Sudbury workers in 2009.

The layoffs and cuts to pay and benefits were at the multi-national company Inco, which cited low nickel prices as a justification.

According to filmmaker Martin Duckworth, workers voted to strike against the advice of the United Steelworkers hierarchy, and the strike enjoyed national support because Inco was a known polluter and one of the biggest multi-nationals in Canada.

Around 11,600 workers were involved in the strike, which affected the wages sustaining 43,000 people, or about 26% of the population of metropolitan Sudbury. By the end of the strike, nine months later, the company had been deprived of over twenty-two million hours of labor.

The workers won small wage increase and a pension package, however thousands of workers lost their homes and cars because of the length of the strike. According to journalist Amy Miller, since 1979, INCO has fired 20,000 employees from their staff and now have more people receiving payments from the pension roll than pay roll.

The role of women in the community during the strike was profiled in the 1980 documentary film A Wives' Tale (Une histoire de femmes).

All Out to Support Striking Vale Inco Workers!

Binge watching the One Piece anime because I have THOUGHTS about the live action and I wanted to do due diligence w.r.t. the source material and now I'm at Whiskey Peak and haven't gotten anything done he-laughed

I just drank half of a 1.75 liter handle of vodka. I barely feel it. It's like I'm fucking sober. (See, I can even type!) Chugging more, really want to get out there, but scared I can't anymore.

I hope they fix the sorting algorithms in the next version of lemmy. Active can feel pretty stale, and Hot can feel kinda sparse. I have to switch between the two (about every 1-2 days). We need a third thing in between (or rather, just fix Active)

supposed to be making at least 60Ib of "cajun roasted chicken" tomorrow and I think I should be making a sauce like this or something because the problem with a lot of the roasted chicken I've been doing is that it gets kinda dried out after sitting in a warmer for a while

I dyed my hair red and went to pole fitness after, every other girl there had similarly dyed red hair. No idea what that means, guess I was in the right place. Anyway, it's growing out now and I think I wanna do pink! I work with sick kids, work would be fine with it - I could probably do something funkier like mermaid hair.

Finally replaced my depression and burnout with a light fatigue, but now I got quite the mess and backlog in my day-to-day to contend with.

People in the US seem extremely shallow and judgemental, and everywhere we go everyone is just loud and BIG PERSONALITIES dominate. Staying in a neighborhood that 10 years ago was predominantly black and Latino and now full of whites with BLM signs and "We support Latinx" in their windows. I hate the terms "woke" and "virtue signaling" but god damn. Someone was really offended at the bar that I mentioned myself and 2 of my roommates were mugged by crackheads in this neighborhood before it was bought out by developers and had world fusion foods with $25 plates and vintage boutiques. Like "we don't talk about that" vibes. Bars full of fat hipster guys and middle aged liberal women who scowl a lot. Everyone talks in a sarcastic quippy tone. Get me the fuck out of this removedry.

If you name your concept "techno"-someting, it better be well founded and obviously useful, I am in no way above dismissing it by making techno music sounds with my mouth

I love watching chiropractic asmr videos for the sounds but goddamn do these people need to be investigated

The one dude will use a gua sha really hard on people until they bruise while they're crying out in pain and will tell them ut hurts because of the "toxins" and the bruises are the toxins leaving

In Tears of the Kingdom, having to wait on this fucking dragon to farm a single mat every 10 minutes is horrible game design. I need 8 mats, that's 80 minutes doing nothing provided I don't miss hit the wrong body part (I did 3 times).

As I near the end of the game, I am finding myself regaining my dislike for things from BotW, even though I quite liked TotK and could deal. As I get Silver enemies spawning and minibosses become such a pain to fight, the urge to explore is fading pretty heavily. Looking back, that was basically true for most of the minibosses anyways, which sucks. I would say overall I enjoyed my time a lot better than BotW, but there is still these nagging issues that keep it from being amazing.

Update: Credits are rolling, I liked the final boss fight, Silver Lynel right before was harder.
