Red meat sector's target of net zero emissions is 'ambitious' and needs 'more investment' (www.abc.net.au)

Red meat industry representatives have conceded achieving zero net emissions for the sector by 2030 is an "ambitious" target requiring "significant investment".

The project manager of Meat and Livestock Australia's (MLA) CN30 (carbon neutral by 2030) Julia Waite said these strategies will be the focus in the lead up to 2030.

"It's an ambitious goal to be net zero in any industry."

He said he believes the goal is achievable if the efficiency of the industry is improved.

"Additives that might reduce emissions of livestock through their diet, that's going to help drive down emissions on the plus side so we don't need so much [carbon] storage," Ms Waite said.

"We're in uncharted territory investing in technology that's really innovative," she said.

A report from 2021, released publicly by the CSIRO this week, shows the industry has reduced its net greenhouse gas emissions by 65 per cent since 2005, but a large portion of that can be attributed to reductions in livestock numbers during the drought.

In its key findings, the report said if livestock numbers increase again, emissions could also be expected to increase.

Reducing livestock numbers works.
