What is the point of chili without meat? It would just be a bowl of beans and spices (or just a bowl of spices since beans really don't belong in chili).
I know I'm a year late, but this is important to address: Chili is a bean dish. Meat is optional, beans are not.
Whoever told you that was very wrong. Chili was originally a meat and chili pepper dish. Adding beans is Tex Mex and came later.
If chili is a meat dish, why would there be a variant called "chili con carne"? If you don't speak Spanish, that means "chili with meat".
I like how you couldn't even be bothered to read the very first sentence in the Wikipedia article. If you did, then you'd understand just how wrong you are.
