Us aussies are such weirdos about property. We're one of the few countries in the world that auction property as a standard form of sale. Property is so deeply engrained in our cultural values and identity that I can't see anything changing for at least a generation or two, even if those generations can't afford it. The aussie dream of home ownership won't die quietly.
Part of aspiring to ownership is to escape renting, which can be quite a degrading experience in Australia depending on who your rental provider is. I'm not interested in ownership for social status, but would love to live in a house that is safe and works properly.
Other countries have far better renter rights as well, although there has been a bit of movement on that in some states.
