Denethor was obsessed cause it was giving him genuine intelligence about his enemy cause Denethor had strong mastery over the Palantir, the problem was that the Intel showed he was fucked. Saruman basically just used it as a phone line to Sauron. Pippin picked up the palantir initially when wormtongue yeeted it from orthanc which led to just enough of a connection to sauron for sauron to fuck with Pippin's mind cause Pippin is absolutely not qualified to handle this thing. Aragorn uses it to his advantage against sauron by showing him Narsil and revealing himself as Isildur and Elendil's heir which made sauron believe that Aragorn had taken the ring from Pippin and was gonna use it against him in war and aragorn could potentially cause some damage in open war if using the ring so he set his strat to war mode and basically left mordor barely defended in an effort to hopefully help frodo assuming he was even alive.
