Would a container of “emergency food” help? That is, food that takes little to no effort to make. I’m German, so I’m raised to eat a slice of bread with a slice of sausage on top as the default meal. I take it this is not a thing in the US. How about making sure you’re always stocked on cereal?

Fellow German here, slice of cheese on bread is the go-to. Microwaved, if I'm feeling spicy.
