this is gonna be absolute chaos with all those giant 2-person-tall wooden pikes with sharp metal on top all getting dropped into free fall in such a tightly packed formation :3

That is 100% the enemy formation. Likely Goths based on the limited information in the cartoon. (Shield shape and pikes)

The aquilifer's responsibility to protect the eagle was so paramount that they would often be killed in battle rather than allow the eagle to fall into enemy hands.
