IDK how numberplates work in Ireland. Care to explain?

The first two numbers are the year the car was ~~bought (or made?)~~ registered, as @[email protected] pointed out . In this case, 2025 since the number plate starts with 25.

Isn’t it just when the plate is registered?

If you bought a car in 2000 and registered it with a new plate today, wouldn’t it have a new plate with 25? They could have had their plate stolen and requested a new one no?

No, it’s when the car is registered. If the plate was stolen and you requested a new one, you’d get the same registration number. The plate identifies the car, basically.

If you bought a car in 2000 and never registered it before 2025, then you’d get a 251 plate. But you wouldn’t be able to drive it on public roads for those 25 years.
