When I heard about this I assumed some kind of gas leak, and after reading the article I wish it was that for their sakes.

Yeah this is one of the weirdest ways this could have gone down. Really wish it had just been carbon monoxide.

Gene Hackman was suffering far progressed Alzeimer disease. So it's quite likely he never really understood what had happened.
