La imagen nacional que los Estados Unidos tienen de sí mismos, como protectores y defensores de la legalidad, la libertad y la democracia, se funda en la creencia de que poseen una superioridad moral (porque son el “pueblo elegido”). Esta suposición les ha permitido justificar su intromisión en los asuntos internos de otros pueblos (que no son “elegidos de Dios”) o de plano la violencia contra ellos. La primera actitud intervencionista inspirada por el espíritu del “Destino Manifiesto” fue la obsesión de los colonos ingleses por desplazar de sus tierras (o bien exterminar) a los indígenas norteamericanos
