As of May 15, Spotify made changes to their API access policy that basically lock out indie developers and small teams. Basically, they can't deploy an app to the public anymore.

To qualify for extended Web API access now, you need to be:

  • A registered company
  • Already launched to the public
  • Have at least 250,000 monthly users (yes, quarter of a million)
  • Be available in “key Spotify markets”
  • And show some form of commercial viability

What the hell?

I’m honestly just disappointed and frustrated. I get that Spotify might be trying to protect themselves from some AI-related fears, but these new rules are just ridiculous.

There are so many passionate devs out there who build awesome stuff just for the love of music and tech, and now they’re completely shut out. No room for students, hobbyists, indie makers… basically anyone who isn’t already a business.

I want things to change, but I honestly don’t know how. All I can do is talk about it here, hoping that more people will see what’s happening and speak up too.

This is a terrible feature on Spotify in my opinion. I use Spotify frequently, including at work. One customer who patronizes us, works in tech and has figured out how to start jams and plays his own music without asking and without permission from me to join my “jam”.

He did this the other day and it disturbed me because I thought I had turned it off the last time he came in. I tried to turn it off permanently from my account but under the start a jam button in settings, there only a link to “find out more” and no toggle switch to turn it off as the internet and Spotify FAQs suggest.

Any way to permanently disable this so this idiot will stop hijacking my account? It also disturbs me because he works in tech and I’m not sure if he can gain access to my actual phone media.

(repost from r/spotify)

I've tried to make this playlist four times now. With the prompt of "Marty Robbins, Johnny Cash, Bob Dylan, Frank Sinatra with a quiet time vibe"

The first two times it gave me only like 15% of what I asked for and then a bunch of random artists. The third time I restated that I only want these four artists.... Then all it does is give me all Marty Robbins songs and one song by Bob Dylan. At least the fourth time it did the exact same thing but gave me a Johnny Cash song as well.

Do you have to be really really specific with these prompts? Or can I not just understand instructions? Or am I a dumbass and just doing it wrong?

They removed the "New Episodes" podcast playlist and replaced it with a new "Following" tab that doesn't allow you to hide episodes you've finished or marked finished.

I follow a ton of podcasts where I only listen to the weekly episode if the subject is something I'm interested in so now my Following/New Episode tab is ridiculously long with no way to hide marked or finished episodes, which will lead me to just start unfollowing those shows.

With every new update, they continue to add things that no one wants, move things around for no reason and remove options/features. So tired of it.
