Not sure if this exists, but is there a top-down style map of the galaxy that will show you the location of cataloged stars?

I just read a story about SNR 0509-67.5, and I'd like to know where it is in relation to us.

I can kind of do this in Elite Dangerous, sorta...but it's a game so who knows how accurate it is.

This is a screenshot from the Tycho software after I stacked 60x1min images from last night, and in the center that light source is the newly discovered interstellar object, known today as 3i/Atlas (or A11pl3Z as it was called yesterday).

This object was reported just yesterday as a new possible new interstellar object entering our solar system (after 1i/Oumuamua and 2i/Borisov). I took the opportunity last night and pointed my telescope at it and took some images. This morning the object was already confirmed, and once I processed my images ... there it was :).

The images was stacked to compensate for the reported movement of the object, which why all the neighbouring stars look like lines, except for one tiny point in the center of the crosshair, located almost exactly at the coordinates reported by Minor Planet Center and Nasa Horizons.

My setup is:

  • Telescope skywatcher 200/800

  • Mount: EQ6R

  • Camera: ZWO ASI 533MC

  • Guiding ZWO ASI 220MM + ZWO OAG

And I took this from my backyard in Bucharest. So for any other amateur astronomers: This object is definetly accessible, a mono camera and a darker sky would get a much better image of this object.

Original Title: The Minor Planet Center has designated 3I/ATLAS = C/2025 N1 (ATLAS), or informally "Comet ATLAS", a new interstellar comet that is currently about 4.5 AU from the Sun and screaming through the solar system at 58 km/s (130000 mph)

Early on Wednesday, the European Space Agency confirmed that the object, tentatively known as A11pl3Z, did indeed have interstellar origins.

This is the third object suspected to be of interstellar origin that has been observed passing through the Solar System. Astronomers expect to find more with new tools designed to identify near-Earth objects. The first of these was ʻOumuamua, discovered in 2017, when it was already moving away from the Sun. It was likely cigar-shaped, and astronomers could only speculate about its nature and age. A couple of years later, astronomers found another object, 2I/Borisov, that was determined to be a rogue comet passing through the Solar System.

Now, with A11pl3Z, the hunt begins anew as astronomers will attempt to glean details about this interstellar interloper.

NASA's Center for Near Earth Object Studies has begun to post preliminary data about the object here. It poses no threat to Earth and, unfortunately, it appears that our planet will be on the opposite side of the Sun when the object makes its closest approach.

A 54-pound meteorite from Mars, believed to be the largest piece of the planet currently on Earth, will be sold to the highest bidder later this month in a Sotheby’s auction that is expected to rake in between $2 million and $4 million.

Though the orbital elements may be further refined, this is almost certainly an interstellar object; with an eccentricity of ~6, it's basically screaming out of interstellar space. Its estimated size (~20 km) is much greater than that of Borisov or ʻOumuamua.
