I've been using my Samsung S23 as a gaming console a lot lately. Mostly playing Call of Duty Mobile. I hook Dex up to my monitor through my USB Dock, connect my wireless earbuds for sound, pair an Xbox controller, and hook up my Lenovo Thinkpad Trackpoint II keyboard, and I'm good to go. I've been really suprised at how well the phone performs for online gaming.

I like playing the C.O.D. while I'm commuting to work on the train. Obviously, while I'm on the go I just play straight on the phone. But at home, it turns into a full concole experience with the extra peripherals.

I wish Samsung did what the Atrix did almost a decade ago, it should've always been like Android on the main screen and Linux as the desktop experience, and being able to see the phone screen mirrored in a window in the Linux desktop. Linux on DeX was such a step in the right direction it's a Shame Samsung cancelled it. There is no Android distro that supports the desktop mode as well, it's an unutilized feature.

Hi Community,

I recently discovered that Microsoft Office Online (the web version) is now almost, if not completely, identical to the full PC version. Impressively, the web version of Word even supports plug-ins, such as the one from Mendeley for inserting references. From my tests, both Samsung Internet and Microsoft Edge (though not Kiwi and Chrome) on Android in desktop mode can properly render Office Online.

Not having the full version of Microsoft Office has always been a hindrance to using Dex as a complete PC replacement. However, with Office Online, it is now a genuine possibility.

I hope you find this as exciting as I do!

Cheers~

I moved from Linux to Samsung, for development. It's better because I can also have apps I like while developing and I don't need to keep looking at the phone. Unfortunately Linux does not work well with touchscreen.

So, coding usually requires more than one monitor. At least on a tablet it makes sense cause its own screen can be used as a monitor and we could extend to a second screen over usb-c. Can we ask them?

Let me start by saying I have tried basically every media interface there is for a home theater system (i.e., something to play media and games in a living room): Firesticks of various qualities, Apple TV 4K, Windows computers, Android TV, Mac computers, dedicated media OSs, etc.

In no universe did I ever expect a PHONE to supercede all of them. Yet, an old samsung S20 FE with DeX has made that happen. The reason I am writing this is that the fact this is such an amazing media machine is so shocking to me.

For reference, I'll list the reason I did not like any of the above as a media/gaming/leisure time machine.

  • FireStick is nice and easy but inundated with ads and requires tons of hackery to get it to work the way you want. Also the interface is just foul unless you customize the hell out of it. IIRC mouse/kb support does not work very well either. No gaming, forced to watch in-app ads, limited to the Amazon store for apps (basically). Internet browsing experience is unusable
  • Apple TV is also nice and easy with a nicer interface. Has some gaming but limited to app store. Forced to watch in-app ads. Limited to apple app store. Browsing experience is painful in multiple aspects. Not customizable
  • MacOS: Pretty nice but reqiores a good amount of extra apps to do basic stuff (get correct resolution on my display, snap a window to a side of the screen). Mobile media-first applications like instagram have to be run in browser (unless you have an M series) which offers a weird experience and difficult to get notifications from everything. Nice because you can skip in-app ads (e.g., Peacock ads) by using a browser with an ad blocker. You can customize individual apps by using the browser interace and other extensions as well (e.g., dark reader). Gaming is ok, can play some mobile games. Also, the screen time controls experience is suprisingly limited.
  • Windows is similar to macos except works a bit better. Gaming is great. Can play mobile games with bluestacks or something but doesn't work great. Screen time/restrictions are not a thing unless you program your own powershell scripts to do things (which I did)
  • Media-dedicated OSs like openmediavault are best for media but limited for other things (e.g., messaging, gaming, internet browsing)

Samsung DeX on the other hand, has given me a perfectly customizable experience for what I want out of a living room media/gaming machine.

  • Customizable in basically every aspect through F-Droid, Vanced Manager, and Play store
  • Keyboard and mouse support is first class, even for games
  • Controller support for mobile games is awesome
  • Can play some emulator games on Dolphin emulator which is INSANE and it works for my favorite multiplayer controller games like Smash Bros and Mario Kart
  • Can be used as a torrent device much like a dedicated NAS or media OS, with a few limitations
  • Mobile-first media apps are flawless since they are running natively on a mobbile device rather than a browser
  • In-app ads can be removed by using browser versions of apps with extensions using Kiwi browser
  • Mobile games work flawlessly, obviouisly, and many of them have supported controis for my peripherals
  • Browsing experience is first class
  • Device is mobile so I can take it whereever with me!
  • Works instantly plugging into a USB-C OTG with USB/ethernet/HDMI attachments. Works flawlessly with my TV and speaker system.
  • No PC games but I have a dedicated gaming pc for that.
  • Screen time/restrictions experience is first class with the Modes/Routines app. This also works on DeX flawlessly!
  • Notifications are aggregated sanely even from browser-only services (e.g., some fantasy football services my friends and I use) as opposed to MacOS/Windows where the browser application has to be opened first before aggregating notifications
  • Legitimately faster and more responsive than every other device except my windows PC. And that includes the mac mini 2018 I have.
  • Truly the most versatile media device I have ever used. Everything somehow just works!!

Anyways, this is a long post but I felt I had to share. I have a very esoteric set of requirements for my home media system (mobile games, media, customizable browsing, emulator games, controller support, mouse and keyboard, etc.) and somehow this PHONE actually handles all that better than any other OS/device I have had over the past 10 years.

I understand that Dex is not a popular feature and that Samsung is working within the constraints of what google provides. But the amount of processing power for a full fledged desktop experience was there for quite some time now but it's heavily handicapped by the lack of proper software support. There is even a windowsOS that runs on the generations older sd845. The amount of sheer potential is staggering, It's a shame they dont do more with it.

I've been using dex occasionally for the last few years with my s21 ultra. Sometimes with my portable zenscreen, occasionally with my 32" 4k monitor.

Today, I had to record some live sessions on my work pc that my company was presenting, which meant no interruptions on the work laptop (quit out of slack & email, and don't do anything else that could interrupt recording) .... 3+ hours worth of it.

And, i'm a Windows developer - been doing this a LONG time.

So instead of using another laptop to do work, I gave Dex a good try today. What I used:

  • S21 Ultra 512gb
  • samsung 45w pd power supply
  • Anker 555 usb-c hub (4k hdmi, usb-c power in, usb-c out, 2 usb-a, sd/microsd, ethernet)
  • wireless keyboard with usb-a dongle
  • Microsoft ergonomic bluetooth mouse
  • wired ethernet connection

The good:

  • I was able to do a lot of work, mostly in web browsers (github, vscode.dev, etc)
  • Slack works in a web browser reasonably well.
  • 4k looks nice in dex

The bad:

  • The outlook client for android really sucks compared to the real corporate windows outlook client. But I can live with that.
  • The slack app sucks on dex
  • Everything just feels slightly "sluggish" compared to a decent windows laptop
  • Windows keyboard shortcuts don't work in a lot of android apps... I really missed that.
  • Mouse movement is just not as smooth as windows.... trying to adjust pointer speed and such helps, but it still doesn't compare to windows
  • Not a lot of control of how browsers display things (like zoom, etc)
  • My setup only allows 4k30 without getting an

My takeaways -

  • Dex is nice, but it still needs more polishing and refining to fully compete with a windows laptop (if it ever could compete?)
  • Even though my hub supports 4k60, because of phone bandwidth i'll only get 4k30. But for regular work, this works. I wasn't watching movies or playing games.
  • A decent (but pricey) docking station might provide a better experience. Not sure though.
  • More apps need to be redesigned to support dex better (like slack, reddit, and many more)
  • In an unusual or emergency situation, dex is there, and can do the basics and then some. For my daily use, it is just not ready yet.
  • I'm hoping the S24 ultra has a decently faster cpu to smooth out some of these things on 4k.
  • I thought about switching to my HD monitor, it probably would have been a smoother experience, but less screen real estate. As a developer, I love screen real estate. My laptop has a 4k display, and with a dell TB docking station, I have 3 external monitors (2 hd, one 4k) so I run with 4 monitors all day long.
  • Still looking for a decent github client that will let me clone repos to and android device. Any suggestions?
  • As more things transition to the cloud, dex becomes more appealing.

I knew this was coming as soon as iPhone added USB-C. I figured someone would create an app to allow for a "Desktop solution" since Apple won't do it.

What are your thoughts? DeX was the reason I left iOS, but I would be interested in seeing how this works. Anyone else?

Been a DeX aficionado for years... got the DeX Pad and a collection of dongles, adaptors, and accessories to feed my escalating ambitions. The prospect of long texts or emails while on the road or on vacation and my strange fixation on digital preparedness to present, correspond, or do work on the fly had me hoarding dongles/HDMIs/portable keyboards.

With an unlimited budget, I was imagining portable monitors, Nexdocks/Lapdock, better keyboards, flatter mice and all manner of tech goodies.

However, after discovering DeX on laptop, whether wired or wirelessly, it seems the search is over. An actual Windows machine offers more than any Lapdock device could and lets you multitask much more effectively (if such a thing is possible).

Granted, if you don't currently own a decent laptop or have an 8th gen or later i3/5/7/9 machine, are young and broke maybe there's something in a lap shell setup or the mobile monitor and all that but I was able to get a used HP Spectre for $350 USD and don't see any reason to continue on the search for the DeX peripheral holy grail search anymore.

Just my two cents, folks.

Am I missing anything, though?

I'm looking to replace my 12+ year old laptop and want something really portable. I've transitioned to fully remote work and really enjoy my WFH to be not in my house. My phone is Android (Pixel 5) so I'm familiar with the ecosystem, but I worry about being able to do all my dev work. I'm a Linux user (Fedora) and mostly use Neovim as an IDE with cli tools for managing cloud infra and deployments (if it's not automated with Bitbucket pipelines). I also do some light gaming (Steam+Proton works great) and game dev (Godot or PhaserJS).

I've heard about Termux for Linux on Android, but not sure whether it would work for this type of use case and would love to hear about anyone else who's gone down this route.

Is it just my case, Fold4 and 80Mbit eth, or Geforce Now has heave lag when playing in Dex mode? Playing on the phone works flawless 1280x1024@120 but on Dex it lags and stutters whatever the resolution is.

Have somebody tried to connect a LAN adapter to the phone?

For those running one of the Android 14 betas (e.g., Pixel or Samsung OneUI 6), please check whether there is a toggle in Settings-> Developer Options -> Disable child process restrictions.

This is meant to address the limitation introduced in Android 12 which breaks Termux-based Linux distros (among other things) without having to use ADB to raise the process limit.

See:

I'm particularly interested in whether this is present in OneUI 6 given running a Linux distribution on the Fold is the dream.

Thank you to anyone who takes the time to check and report back!

This one's been a long time coming, longer than expected.

As always, we've been sent the device to review, no money has changed hands, and XREAL has no editorial input prior to it being posted.

We're not real journalists, but we're trying to be as honest, and accurate as we can.

All that being said, let's get into it.

the XREAL Beam is an accessory device for the Xreal air AR glasses. The intent of the device is to give better air access to ~~ghetto devices like the iPhone and Pixel~~ devices that don't support video out over their charging ports, as well as to add 3DoF (3 DoF means orientation tracking. This means the 3 axes which an object can be rotated about are tracked) to otherwise static images. This is where DeX is affected.

The Beam is a small iPod sized device that contains a small battery, and fan, with a control scheme reminiscent of the original iPods click wheel.

It has 2 usb-c ports on the bottom. 1 used exclusively for connection to the XREAL air glasses, and the 2nd used for charging, or video input.

One of the limitations of the XREAL Airs on a DeX handset, is that the Nebula software doesn't have access to everything you'd need to be useful. So most of us just use the Air's as HMD, essentially just a plain static image/monitor.

The Beam allows you to fire up DeX in the airs, and gain access to the 3 modes that are supported. Because it adds 3DoF, it also allows you, in all 3 modes, to move the virtual screen closer, or further away, and just gives a TON more ability to cater the screen to your needs. Everything from a virtual 32" screen up to about a 300" screen.

Static (this is the normal mode). This is the basic window drawn right in front of your, and follows every movement of your head.

Smooth Follow; this allows you to move your head around a bit, and the window....floats, for lack of a better term. It then smoothly slides into a centered position

Body Anchor. This is the really interesting one for me. This allows you to "pin" a screen in space, so that as you turn your head away from the window, the glasses just essentially clear up, and you look thru them like normal glasses. Then as you move your head back to the pinned location, your virtual monitor shows up again.

This works great to use DeX as a reference monitor. Pin the DeX screen above the monitor of the system I'm working on, glance down and work on the monitor of the problem system, and just glance up to see reference material.

It also works really great when paired with the Steam Deck. Using a physical monitor from the 1st video output (dual output dock) and have the 2nd video output connected to the beam, and thru the beam to the Airs. You can then pin a 2nd monitor to the side, or above the physical monitor, and have a true dual monitor setup.

Docked Steam Deck

Docked Steam Deck seen thru Airs with Beam

The beam itself is battery powered, with kind of a charge life expected to be about 3ish, maybe 3.5 hours.

The upside of this, in a DeX scenario, is that the glasses are no longer drawing power from your phone itself. A longer movie session will not crater your phone battery any longer.

The downside, is that even when connected to a power source, the beam will use power faster than it can be charged.... So even using it docked with a steam deck, or a ps5 (or whatever) it will eventually run out of juice...

The Beam is capable of being used wirelessly as well. You can connect DeX to the beam via miracast, and it works as expected. You get the typical extra latency from miracast, but if you're just firing up Plex/netflix/youtube it's still a pretty decent experience. Other devices are also able to use airplay or miracast, but it'll be device dependent. YMMV with the experience as well. It's much better with DeX than other choices....

I think a lot of folks were expecting the Beam to replace their phone, and be a standalone media machine. It does run a version of android 11, and there is somewhat of an active modding community around sideloading of apps, etc. I still firmly believe it should only be viewed as purely an accessory device for the Airs.

The beam itself is small enough to pocket easily, but because it contains a fan, and tends to heat up quite a bit, it really shouldn't be pocketed. It's a bit of jankfest in that regard. I tend to use it laying on my desk, beside the steam deck most times.

Conclusion

This is a tough device to really evaluate in a lot of ways. Hardware wise, it's fairly well made, the buttons work well, but cooling system leaves a lot to be desired. The fan isn't particularly efficient, nor quiet, and it's pretty much always on while the device is in use.

The added viewing styles, and sizes/distances is a really nice touch too.

I don't feel that me personally, it adds a ton of value to the DeX user. If you're someone that gets motion sickness tho, it reportedly helps a great deal using smooth motion. For bus/train commuters, this alone might be worth the price of purchase.

For use with the steam deck tho, the ability to add a pinned monitor for desktop mode is amazing. Especially if you're working on a really tiny desk, or a cramped space, but able to add a 2nd, or 3rd monitor (counting the decks primary screen) is really valuable. Being able to physically move your head around to inspect various parts of multiple monitors is a really understated benefit of 3DoF for work flow.

The other thing to consider, the Beam is a work in progress. It's constantly being worked on, and improved. I wouldn't call it an early access device, but it's pretty close....

So overall, I would not put the beam in the MUST HAVE category, for DeX-XReal owners, but it's definitely in the NICE TO HAVE segment.

At the time of this writing, the beam is about $120 USD and can be found direct from XREAL:

Or from amazon

Currently, its Japan USA only, but European amazon sales are imminent (I think germany has them now?) and I'd expect/hope to see more widespread availability as we go from here

Hello, for a few days (or last Android update of September 22) I have no longer been able to view websites in "Desktop mode" on my Samsung Fold 4 in Chrome. It still displays the mobile site. I feel like this happened yesterday while updating android.

Even if I check the "Desktop mode" option in Chrome, the site is displayed as a mobile website. The switch is not made to the desktop version of the site

Some discussion forums mention the option Chrome://flags "Called Request desktop site for tablets " But this option is no longer available since the latest Chrome or Android updates.

My question: How to always display/view the website in "desktop" mode even if the website wants to force us to use the mobile version? On a Samsung Fold 4, it is much more pleasant to browse on Chrome with the “Desktop” version of the site.

Thanks

Hi all,

I've got a Z Fold 4 and am about to start a new job where they allow me to use my own devices for work (yay!)

I'd really like to use Dex as much as possible. I've been testing it wirelessly on the cheap with a generic BT keyboard and mouse and a miracast dongle in the back of my monitor. It's actually pretty decent to be honest, but I have a few questions if anyone can offer any insight!

  1. Any thoughts on using the Samsung M5 Smart Monitor for wireless Dex? I've heard there's slightly less latency when connecting the peripherals to the monitor instead of the device itself?
  2. Google Meet - I feel like this may end up being my nemesis 🤣 Is there any way at all to make this work with an external webcam, maybe via the monitor? Also, screen sharing... at the moment it's knocking off Dex when I enable screen sharing. Does this only work wired maybe? Or is it just because my miracast dongle is super old? 😂 Believe the monitor has a Google Meet app, but guessing I can't use that at the same time as Dex?
  3. Scroll wheel on the mouse seems to be a bit ridiculous... do I just have to live with it?!
  4. Best RDP app? Got a Linux machine running through NoMachine, seems okay but be good to know if there's a better solution
  5. Best solution for Slack? I'm guessing web app?
  6. Best browser? Firefox maybe?

The new place uses GSuite, so will mainly be using their apps, Slack, web browsing etc. Bit of dev work which I can do on Linux. Only real work-related concern is figuring out Google Meet, as I'll need to do technical demos etc (of a web-based platform). I've used office for years, think I may actually miss Teams!

Not touched my personal Windows laptop since I got this phone 😊 would be ideal if I can use it for literally everything!

Any advice gratefully received! TIA

So like, is Samsung DeX usually so buggy? I don't know its history or anything, but I really, really have been wanting to get into it, but I tend to have problems with it.

My first issue is that when I use DeX via a cable to my PC, if I have a game open, it tends to mess with my mouse and it gets all stuttery. My second issue is that it crashes often. If I were to tab out of it and attempt to tab back to it, it just crashes and stops. Whether I'm connected through cable, or wirelessly. Are these things user error, or just to be expected? Sorry if it seems like I'm complaining. I truly just want to understand.
