In south Florida at this time of year we see lots of beached Portuguese man-o-wars. They can sting like a jellyfish, but are actually a "colony" of 4 separate polyps that all live together. Often just the bladder remains, but sometimes they'll still have their full array of tentacles, which can reach 10 feet (and will most definitely still sting you if you touch them)

Some of the photos I take, to get the subject large enough in the frame I have to use electronic zoom. I don't have money for a nice zoom lens. I tried using an adapter for one of Dad's zoom lenses but it sometimes gives me issues. So I use a 4x zoom - which basically cuts off 3/4 of my sensor then expands the picture to full size (I guess by some sort of averaging math to create the discarded pixels)

Is there anything I can do in post to get some of that resolution back - even if it made up. I am a Linux user, so a workflow in GIMP would be great, or any other Free/Libre software you might suggest?

I'm a complete beginner with no photography experience but excited to get into it.

Budget: ~$500

Needs: High quality macro of all kinds (my main purpose for getting a camera in the first place). Secondary: portraits (full body / upper body). Tertiary to those is versatility for everything else as it's going to be the only lens for the foreseeable future. I'd also love for the lens to have all the latest features like autofocus and the such (if there's anything else).

I've done some research around macro RF lenses for R50 (ASP-C cropped sensor) and among the 24mm, 35mm, and 85mm it seems 35mm stands out the most for the above needs but since I'm on a tight budget, I need quality advice to make sure I'm not making a mistake here.

I know Canon EF 100mm f/2.8 Macro USM is better due to 1:1, but it wouldn't be as versatile as 35mm and thus annoying to use for anything other than macro due to the effective 160mm on the crop lense, right?

I could theoretically get used lenses but it's difficult where I live. The EF to RF adapter would have to be without the ring (too expensive otherwise), and I might have real trouble finding the suggested proper older EF (or third party) lens. Plus, most used lenses here aren't much cheaper, even the really old ones, and I really doubt they'd be in good condition either. But for a really good recommendation I might consider it.

Total beginner here, looking to buy my first camera and looking for a lens that would be able to deal with the widest range of situations (a zoom one) all in one package. I've got about 600usd to spend on it and I'm fully aware it's not much, but I want to get a good start.

I can't buy used ones where I live (even from online platforms around the world), so it'd have to be new.

At the moment my goal is to take photos of pretty much everything: nature (apart from moving animals), landscapes, streets, portraits, objects (large and small), architecture, and I also plan to film videos quite a bit. Nothing fast moving and no sports though.

I'd love to shoot in close-up macro, too, but I understand it's not possible within one lens.

What could you recommend?

I’m totally new to photography and want to get my first camera. I’ll mainly be using it for nature photography while hiking and traveling.

My only focus is on photos of the highest possible quality.

My budget is around $600, and I’ll also need essential accessories, but don't know what I'd need, like a lens?

Not open to refurbished, as I'm buying in Vietnam.

I was attempting to capture the full moon tonight using my Canon EOS R50 mounted on a tripod. I had a telephoto lens attached to the camera via a Canon adapter, as this lens was originally designed for my father's Canon Digital Rebel and had an incompatible mount for the R50.

While zoomed in on the moon to fill the frame, I observed an unexpected behavior: the camera appeared to automatically zoom the image back out. I was under the impression that the camera itself lacked the capability to adjust the zoom setting, but the viewfinder clearly indicated a change in magnification

Update: In case it is important, the lens has image stabilization built in, but I have it turned off as it lets me set focus and recompose better.

Took a 8min exposure with my Nikon D800 and my 50mm f/1.4 by night.

I find it quite interesting how the image looks almost like it's daytime, just with startrails in the background.

I am looking at a project that will require rather fast transfer of the shots I get.

I will be outside in the nature at different locations and my Android phone is my only connection to the storage target over 4G/5G/LTE.

From what I can tell there are a number of options:

• Shooting with a FTP tether over the phone WiFi to upload to the destination
• Shooting with a USB tether to..? My phone? A computer?
• Using wireless tether addons for greater transfer speeds, but also that will be to a computer I guess..?

Have anyone of you done this before with good transfer speeds?

I've seen videos where people mention RAW transfer times of 10-20 seconds. That will create a huge queue of photos for me to upload.

Is wired USB tether to a computer with a good internet connection the only way to achieve this?

I am OK with shooting compressed RAW to keep file sizes down, but the transfer speeds still have to be fast for this to be reliable.

All in all I just want it to be fast and reliable with as little hardware as possible.

I understand this post is more or less just a brain dump. I appreciate any pointers or suggestions.

I have never really shot tethered before, so this is jumping into the deep end of the pool directly.

Edit: I am looking at getting an Sony a7iii for this, but want the solution to work for as many different camera models as possible.
