Molten Horizon

This photo captures the sun and ocean as sunset approaches over the Caribbean Sea. The sun, positioned low in the western sky, casts visible rays that stretch outward like golden spokes. Its reflection creates a luminous path across the water, leading directly toward the viewer. A few scattered clouds drift through the sky, but the most striking is a large, lingering cloud just beneath the sun—its presence adding depth and drama to the scene.

The photographs I share here don’t appear as vivid as they do in my Pixel’s gallery. To make them load more easily, I reduce their size and slightly lower their quality. Take a look:

Watcher of the Woods

Here’s a red-tailed hawk (Buteo jamaicensis) I spotted some time ago while Charlie and I were out walking. I captured the image from quite a distance using my walkaround setup—a Canon 6D Mark II paired with a 100–400mm lens and a 1.4x extender, giving me an effective focal length of 560mm. The hawk was likely 100 meters away, maybe more, but even at that range, its presence was unmistakable.

What's Bluer Than a Bluebird

This is an indigo bunting (Passerina cyanea), many of these birds were around during early spring a couple of years ago.

If you’re captivated by indigo buntings and other members of the Cardinalidae family—better known as the cardinal family—step into my photo gallery for a visual feast. Come take a look:

Bath Time Bond

There’s something quietly heartwarming about watching these two rock pigeons (Columba livia) enjoying the birdbath. It’s a gentle reminder that I need to get outside and tend to the feeders. I’ve already skipped our usual Friday Walk—Charlie, my border collie, wasn’t thrilled. Time to get back into the rhythm of things.

If you're a fan of stunning dove imagery, be sure to explore my photo gallery for a collection of beautiful snapshots that capture their elegance and charm.

Good morning, friends. 🌺💮🌻

25 July 2025

Charlie came in early this morning to badger me about breakfast—still fifteen minutes away. He kept nudging my keyboard with his nose, persistent and focused, while it rested on my lap. I told him to lie down, but had to repeat myself; he was determined to get me moving. When the clock finally ticked over to mealtime, I stood and announced, “Time to eat—go outside,” and he bolted to the door. I almost always let him out while I prepare his food. It’s just part of my morning rhythm at home.

When I’m working at my desk, I usually prop my legs on the corner and balance the keyboard in my lap. Maybe it’s not textbook posture for typing, but it feels natural to me.

I almost forgot to get around to the #PhotOfTheDay so here's a drone shot of the San Joaquin River winding through low Central Valley farm country. This is on the western edge of my town, or close.

Red-Bellied Woodpecker in the Forest

I took this photo of a red-bellied woodpecker (Melanerpes carolinus) in early spring, during a false start to the season. A warm spell had coaxed our crepe myrtles into blooming prematurely, only to be followed by a final freeze that killed many of the branches. I’ve since trimmed them back, and thankfully, the plants themselves are still doing well.

Egret in the Wetlands

I spotted this snowy egret (Egretta thula) near Beaufort, South Carolina—at the same location where I saw a juvenile little blue heron just a few days ago. Interestingly, I’ve often noticed snowy egrets and juvenile little blue herons spending time together, and I’ve wondered why. Perhaps the young herons associate with egrets because of their similar appearance—and because there’s safety in numbers.

Explore a curated collection of heron and egret images in my photo gallery. Take a look!

Good morning. 🩴🩴🩴

14 July 2025

Do you remember flip-flops? Oh wait—of course you do. They’re still kicking around. Simple rubber footwear with that little strap nestled between the piggy who went to market and the one who stayed home. I couldn’t tell you how many pairs I wore out as a kid—and later, as an adult in the Marines and Army, though we called them shower shoes back then.

I remember wearing them to the beach, where sand would sneak in and cause just enough friction to make things uncomfortable. Still, they were easy to rinse off and ready to go again.

Did you know the name “flip-flops” in the U.S. and Britain comes from the sound they make when you walk? Other countries have their own names for them. In Australia, they’re called thongs—which might raise a few eyebrows stateside.

“Some of the best memories are made in flip-flops.” – Kellie Elmore
