Uncrowned Watcher

There were many new birds around this morning, including this immature, red-bellied woodpecker (Melanerpes carolinus). By “new,” I mean birds that quite literally didn’t exist a month ago—fresh arrivals ushered into the world as spring fades into summer. This young woodpecker hasn’t yet developed its crimson crown, and I imagine that absence might improve its odds of survival while it’s still learning the ropes.

Yesterday, one of our grandchildren called to reassure my wife that he’d be there to take care of us when the time comes. A daughter had said much the same not long ago. And I found myself thinking, “Oh gosh, what must we look like from the outside?” Truth be told, we both have our quirks and health puzzles—as anyone does, the longer they live. But when your children and grandchildren start regularly reminding you, they’ve got your back, it gives you pause. We have great-grandchildren now, though by the time they’re grown, we’ll likely be gone. Still, we remain fully capable of managing our own lives, and I don’t see that changing anytime soon. Happy thoughts, happy thoughts.

I’d been seeing these Canada geese with their babies on my drive to work and the other day I was finally able to stop and photograph them. They were adorable.🥹 From what I can tell, they were probably between 2 and 3 weeks old at the time of the photos.

Glimmerwatch

This boat-tailed grackle (Quiscalus major) was hunting along the shoreline at Sabine National Wildlife Refuge in Louisiana. These striking birds are found only near the coastal regions of the eastern United States—from eastern Texas, sweeping around the Gulf and Atlantic coasts, all the way north to Massachusetts.

The Great White one of the largest members of the heron family—about the size of a Grey Heron—with dazzling white plumage, a long, sinuous neck, and a dagger-like yellow bill that turns darker during breeding season. Its black legs and feet help distinguish it from the smaller Little Egret, which has yellow feet.

Two Notes on a Branch

This wasn’t the image I intended to work on this morning—I moved it to my working folder by mistake. But once it was there, I decided to follow its lead. The photo captures a house finch couple (Haemorhous mexicanus) perched quietly on a branch, as if pausing to gather their thoughts together.

The photographs I share here don’t appear as vivid as they do in my Pixel’s gallery. To make them load more easily, I reduce their size and slightly lower their quality. Take a look:

It’s Matariki in Aotearoa (New Zealand) today - a public holiday to celebrate the rising of the Pleiades/Seven Sisters star cluster that coincides with the winter solstice and its significance to Māori. One of the traditional ways to celebrate is by sharing kai moana (seafood). This kōtare (sacred kingfisher) ain’t sharing though! Mānawatia a Matariki (happy Matariki).
