Velvet Fire

This is a close-up of a Johnny Jump-up, a species of violet also known as a wild pansy. The flower is burgundy, with five petals—though one is partly hidden behind the others. The petals are layered: a single top petal faces downward and slightly to the left; beneath it are two side petals, one on each side. Between them, a fourth petal straddles the gap, and tucked behind that, peeking out to the left, is the fifth. The top three petals shift in color near the center, forming a subtle ring: yellow on the uppermost petal, and white on the two just below. At the heart of it all sits a short stigma, delicately colored in yellow and red.

Good morning. ⏰☕🧑‍🏭

23 June 2025

“...Monday, Monday, Can’t trust that day Monday, Monday, Sometimes it just turns out that way Oh, Monday mornin’, You gave me no warnin’ of what was to be...” – John Edmund Andrew Phillips

“Monday, Monday,” as performed by The Mamas and the Papas, tends to lodge itself in my head the moment the week begins. Now it might be in yours, too. Some songs are just contagious like that, aren’t they? I’ll admit, this is also one of those times I’m padding the page—filling space when I’ve got nothin’ to say. That foggy first-thing-in-the-morning silence isn’t exactly unusual. I’d linger in it a little longer, but Charlie’s waiting to be fed, and we’ve got a Monday Walk to greet.

Red Crest Rising

This is a male pileated woodpecker—a photograph I took a few months back. I caught a glimpse of a pair just yesterday; they touched down briefly in a nearby pine before continuing westward. That’s how most forest birds travel: small, cautious hops from tree to tree. I suppose it’s safer that way.

The Tallow Tangle

“This is a photograph of new leaves on a Chinese tallow. Shaped somewhat like rounded diamonds, they display a lively mix of green, yellow, and red. In contrast, the background leaves appear muted—a dull grayish green. Though they’re a vibrant green in nature, I’ve adjusted the color properties slightly here for effect.

"As Adobe explores ways to evolve mobile photography, and in order to address some of these gaps, we have developed a camera app we call Project Indigo. Today, we are releasing this for iPhone as a free mobile app from Adobe Labs, available in the Apple App Store - to share our progress and get feedback from the community. The app offers full manual controls, a more natural ("SLR-like") look, and the highest image quality that computational photography can provide - in both JPEG and raw formats. It also introduces some new photographic experiences not available in other camera apps.

Let's break this down, starting with computational photography. While this phrase has come to mean many things, in the context of mobile cameras it typically includes two strategies: (1) under-expose slightly to reduce the clipping of highlights, and (2) capture multiple images in rapid succession when you press the shutter button. These images are aligned and combined to reduce noise in the shadows. The laws of physics say that imaging noise (the digital version of film grain) goes down as the square root of the number of images that are added together, so if the camera combines 9 images, noise is reduced by a factor of 3.
(...)
What's different about computational photography using Indigo? First, we under-expose more strongly than most cameras. Second, we capture, align, and combine more frames when producing each photo - up to 32 frames as in the example above. This means that our photos have fewer blown-out highlights and less noise in the shadows. Taking a photo with our app may require slightly more patience after pressing the shutter button than you're used to, but after a few seconds you'll be rewarded with a better picture.

As a side benefit of these two strategies, we need less spatial denoising (i.e. smoothing) than most camera apps. This means we preserve more natural textures."

Good morning. ☕☕☕

22 June 2025

I don’t like getting political on this blog, but I need to be honest about how I’m feeling right now. Lately, it feels like we’re being led by Major Fambrough—the unstable officer Lieutenant Dunbar encounters at Fort Hays in Dances with Wolves. He’s the one who famously declares, “I just peed my pants and nobody can do anything about it.” It’s absurd, yes—but also unsettlingly on point.

Now, with that off my chest, the sun is shining, and I may head outside to watch birds again this morning. You never know when a new species might show up. Once Charlie’s had his breakfast, we’re off. As usual, I have the choice between peaceful silence without my hearing aids or the vibrant chorus of bird songs with them. It’s good to have options.

Up in Liverpool on a University open day & popped into the Liverpool Metropolitan Cathedral, designed by Edwin Lutyens & Frederick Gibberd… amazing building & a huge space inside #photography #building #architecture

Black and white photo of the front elevation of the Liverpool Metropolitan Cathedral, depicting the large stone steps leading to a stone wall with the top of the conical tower appearing above the wall. Aside the cathedral at the front are two flag poles with banners displayed and all set against a mostly cloudy and bright sky
