Buffet City
Buffet City is a Chinese buffet here in town where my wife and I occasionally grab lunch. No long waits, just a sit-down meal and all the General Tso’s you can handle. Anyway, seeing a pair of red-bellied woodpeckers (Melanerpes carolinus) at one of my feeders this morning reminded me of the place. The male—he’s the one on the left with the peanut—isn’t showing off his red forehead in this shot, but he’s easy enough to spot once you know who’s who.

Our walk yesterday was a bit of a scorcher. The sun and heat wore us down—we do better in cool air. We turned back before reaching our destination, and it was Charlie who made the call. A wise one, too. He let me know it was time by pointing to the other side of the highway.
Understanding dogs is all about body language. Live with one long enough, and you pick up on every subtle movement. We always walk facing traffic, so Charlie knows that when it’s time to head home, we “crossover” to the other side. And just to be clear, I wasn’t referring to “crossing over to the other side” like in some horror movie—I just meant the shoulder across the road.
