Hidden Singer

his morning, a Brown Thrasher (Toxostoma rufum) made an appearance, slipping through the brush with its usual quiet confidence.

Step into a world where even the smallest moments—like the glint in a bird's eye—tell their own story.

Had been sat in a hide for at least half an hour when this Heron rose up from the reeds directly in front of us. We had no idea it was there.

Looking Out on the Realm

Northern Mockingbirds (Mimus polyglottos) are known for their fierce territorial instincts. This individual perches atop a young pine, keenly surveying the landscape below—perhaps watching for intruders, or scanning for an unsuspecting insect stirred by the wind.

My photo gallery features over 1300 carefully selected images. While most are chosen for their visual appeal, a few stand out as novelty shots. Feel free to explore my gallery at:

#photoOfTheDay is a bad photo (with many reflections I couldn't control) of the original artwork for "Sin Preferred" by legendary pulp artist Rudy Nappi. It's a lovely painting and I'd love to have it, but the asking price is $4500 because highly collectible. 😬

Seen at Robert's Bookshop in Lincoln City, Oregon, which is probably my favorite used bookstore.

Brushstrokes of a Siskin

When I took this photo, I initially thought the bird was a House Finch—since they also have streaky lines on their breast. But the markings here are darker and more dotted than what you'd typically see on a finch. It turns out this bird is a Pine Siskin (Spinus pinus), another member of the finch family.

If you're a fan of stunning dove imagery, be sure to explore my photo gallery for a collection of beautiful snapshots that capture their elegance and charm.

Good morning, friends. ⏰🫘☕

27 June 2025

Yesterday afternoon, I headed out to do some yard work and noticed the mower was leaving strips of uncut grass, so I had to keep going back over the same spots. After finishing that section, I took a closer look and found that a belt had slipped off the pulleys. So, I spent the rest of the afternoon wrangling with that in the heat. When I finally got it put back together, it still didn’t look quite right—but it seems to be working okay, and I didn’t have any leftover parts, so I’ll count that as a win. I must’ve been more worn out than I realized, because later I accidentally took my morning meds again—well, at least half of them. Ever done that? If you’re anywhere near my age bracket, meds are probably part of your daily routine too. Annoying, but hey… whatcha gonna do.

Majestic Sky

This photograph captures a sky thick with brooding clouds, shifting in tone from bright white to deep blue. At the center, sunlight pierces through the gloom, casting radiant beams that illuminate the heavens. In the lower right, the silhouettes of two treetops quietly frame the scene. Words fall short of conveying the full majesty of this moment.

The Orange Glance

When the Baltimore Orioles (Icterus galbula) were passing through a few years ago, several would drop by this little swing feeder. A friend on Mastodon suggested I try offering half an orange—and sure enough, it worked. I placed a sliced orange on the feeder and ended up with some pretty cool shots. This was the first one I captured.

It's been a few days since I posted a picture, so here's a recent one. A few weeks ago, I took the day off to go fishing with my pops! Taken at Lac Ste. Anne, a local lake in Alberta, Canada. Found an island "beach" to pull up at and have a lunch break.

Guardian of Quiet Air

Here’s a mystery bird—Avis Mystica. I don’t recall taking this photo, but clearly, I did. It was probably something I noticed while Charlie and I were out wandering. I love the composition, though the detail isn’t quite what I’d hoped for. It appears to be some kind of raptor—possibly a Mississippi Kite (Ictinia mississippiensis). But let’s be honest—that’s what we called a WAG in the Army: a wild-ass guess.

Good morning.

26 June 2025

My head’s throbbing this morning—not with pain, just that spacey, pre-caffeinated buzz, like the low thrum of electricity in the walls. Nothing to worry about. Just morning being its usual strange self. I did try to move my coffee cup with my mind, though. No luck. 😂

Remember those X-Ray glasses they used to advertise in comic books? I never had a pair, but I did once get some Sea Monkeys. Turned out they were just brine shrimp in a powdered egg packet, housed in a tiny plastic aquarium. I still remember the seconds of fun. It was marketing gold—right up there with the Pet Rock. Personally, I always thought Troll Dolls were the more practical investment.
