I took this image of a Eurasian collared dove (Streptopelia decaocto) a few years ago. That year, they showed up almost daily—just the same two, I believe, visiting like clockwork.

Vireo’s Vigil

I’d planned to break with precedent and take advantage of the cool morning air to trim the grass. But instead, Charlie—my dog—and I ended up just sitting in the backyard, watching the birds.

Fortunately, we began our vigil just in time: a yellow-throated vireo (Vireo flavifrons) paid us a visit. I’ve heard their songs in the mornings, so I knew they were around, but this was the first time I’d actually seen one. I’ve photographed their white-eyed cousins a few times, but this moment felt like a quiet little gift.

Isn't it a bit annoying when someone complains about how old they are—especially when you're twenty years their senior? Or maybe the word I’m really looking for is ancient. 😂 You can only get ancienter from here… wait, is ancienter a word? It must be. Spell check didn’t protest.

Anyway, it just occurred to me—there is a point when you stop getting older. But let’s not dwell on that this morning. Happy thoughts, happy thoughts.

Speaking of age, I remember my great-grandmother. I only knew her as a very old woman, bent and slowed by arthritis when I was a small child. But I have a photograph of her as a young woman, dressed in elegant Edwardian style, complete with hat. She was truly beautiful.

Wings Like Midnight

This is a Red-spotted Admiral butterfly (Limenitis arthemis astyanax). A couple of years ago, it was darting through the yard while I was outside with my dogs, Ben and Charlie. I seized the moment when it paused on the lawn to capture this shot.

In the Seed of the Moment

Here we have a sunflower seed that somehow managed to catch itself a Carolina chickadee (Poecile carolinensis). There seem to be more of these lively little birds flitting about than there were last year—proof, perhaps, of a successful mating season or two.

Walking the Catwalk

It’s been long enough since I last shared an image of this Great Blue Heron (Ardea herodias) strolling a sandbar in Gulfport, Mississippi, on the Gulf of Mexico, early in the morning. Lifted by Light

I took this photograph some time ago, originally mistaking the bird for a Great Egret. But after looking more closely, I realized it’s actually a Western Cattle Egret (Bubulcus ibis). I’ve seen plenty of them dotting pastures as we drive through the countryside, but this was the first time I’d captured one through the lens.
