Bright Visitor in the Canopy

This bird dropped in briefly this morning while Charlie and I were outside, sipping coffee and watching the feeder drama unfold. I believe it’s a juvenile Baltimore Oriole (Icterus galbula), though it could also be an Orchard Oriole (Icterus spurius). Honestly, I’m hoping for the latter—I don’t have a photo of one yet. But Merlin lists Baltimore as its first choice and Orchard as a close second. Copilot agrees: the evidence leans toward Baltimore.

Do you remember when fresh coffee came in vacuum-sealed cans that had to be opened with a can opener? Those quietly disappeared, didn’t they?

This morning, I made a mistake so embarrassing, the cultured elite would be well within their rights to scoff. I reached for what I thought was a bag of coffee beans, only to discover—gasp—it was pre-ground French roast.

Now, the French roast isn’t the issue. But pre-ground? That’s a betrayal of everything my Coffee-Snob persona stands for.

If I were to mingle among people—not that I will—I wouldn’t be able to meet a single gaze. My coffee grinder sits in silent judgment.

Alligator Lake

This photograph, taken at Alligator Lake, captures a scene where green, reflective water fills the bottom half of the frame. In the center of the lake, a small turtle rests lazily on a log. Along the water’s edge, grasses and broad green elephant ears rise up from the shoreline, adding depth and texture to the composition. The upper half of the frame is filled with trees in varying shades of green and yellow, their canopies mirrored in the still surface below.

Near the center stands a small broadleaf tree—possibly a sweet gum—that draws the eye. It’s shaped like a classic Christmas tree, its triangular form adorned with boughs and clusters of yellow-green leaves that seem to float gently around the trunk. Pause Between Ripples

Last year in Georgia, I spotted this anhinga (Anhinga anhinga) at a small, secluded pond in Albany. It was the first time I’d seen one up close, so I took dozens of photos—something I tend to do when the setting and subject align just right. Every so often, I share one.

The photographs I share here don’t appear as vivid as they do in my Pixel’s gallery. To make them load more easily, I reduce their size and slightly lower their quality. Take a look:

Crown in the Making

This blue jay (Cyanocitta cristata) perched in a tree above me, offering a chance to capture it from an unusual angle. It was actively grooming, its beak working methodically through its feathers. I was struck by how slender its neck appeared—perhaps a sign of youth or evidence of a recent molt.

Stay Back or I Jump

I was watching these Carolina chickadees a couple of days ago. There were actually three of them, though I couldn’t quite get the third in the frame. Two kept trying to get close to the one perched highest on the limb, but that bird kept shifting away, just out of reach. I couldn’t help wondering what was playing out. My best guess? The two were fledglings, trying to cozy up to a parent—maybe hoping for food or just some reassurance.

Where the Gulls Gather

This photograph was taken at Holly Beach, Louisiana, along the Gulf of Mexico. The upper two-thirds of the frame is awash in blue-tinted ocean, while the lower edge meets a stretch of brown, wave-worn sand. Swells roll in toward the shore, cresting into foamy white waves that spill over and leave behind scattered tide pools. On the beach, a gathering of roughly 40 shorebirds congregates at the water’s edge. Among them are various species—gulls, terns, sanderlings, and a few I couldn’t identify. Most stand quietly along the surf, but a handful lift into the air, winging low over their companions.

The Cinnamon Crown and the Climber

I captured this image yesterday of a red-bellied woodpecker and a northern cardinal perched unusually close together. The cardinal had arrived first and didn’t seem too thrilled when the woodpecker showed up. As you can see, she eventually decided to take her leave.
