Periwinkle Mosaic

This square-framed photograph features a vibrant cluster of Madagascar periwinkles (Catharanthus roseus). Most of the blooms are white with deep pink centers, while a few are vivid red. All are nestled among lush green leaves and gentle shadows, creating a rich, textured backdrop.

#PhotoOfTheDay is an oldie I took of the colorful gas bubbles burning on my Jetboil Flash backpacking stove. I loved the way the way these little gas domes form from all of the vents in the base.

Gaze of a Beginner

Here’s a fledgling house sparrow (Passer domesticus) I spotted the other day. I can still hear his song echoing through the grass: "I wonder, I wo-wo-wo-wonder why you made me go." 🎶

If you enjoy photos of birds and other wildlife, take a look at my photo gallery. Sparrows are never overlooked—they're a valued and important part of my collection. Feel free to explore!

Good morning. 🌻🌻🌻

8 July 2025

The clock is ticking toward mealtime, and I’ve yet to come up with anything to say this morning. I wonder—do professional writers ever have that problem? Oh, a light just flickered on—literally. One of the LED overheads in my office likes to blink in and out. I’ve been meaning to fix it, but there’s always a better time. The closet doors are wide open, revealing a scatter of things both old and new, only slightly more chaotic than the rest of the room. I keep telling myself I’ll get to it, but the truth is, I’m lazy. Or maybe just busy. Strangely, I had more time when I worked full-time. These days, I seem to stay in motion from the moment I get up until about four in the afternoon.

I keep talking about my fledgling Red-bellied Woodpecker but I finally got off my duff this morning to photograph this sweet baby

My heart is broken into pieces, my friend & bird guide of many years that i shared many adventures with, most recently in Panama, has died, it just doesn't seem fair -- he was much younger, i just assumed he would always be there & we were already talking about the next trip...

Amber Meets Amethyst

I believe this is a Sleepy Orange butterfly (Eurema nicippe) perched on a cluster of Slender Vervain (Verbena rigida). I'm not entirely certain about the butterfly ID—I based it on a Google search—so I always welcome confirmation or help with accurate identification.

Steel Feather, Still Sky

Charlie and I just got back from our Monday morning walk. Along the way, I spotted a bird off in the distance and snapped a photo—not knowing at the time what kind of bird it was. I’ve included the original image to show how far away it was. For reference, I was using a 560mm lens, which offers about 11× magnification.

Using digital tools, I cropped and zoomed in to get a clearer view. The second image gives a much better look at the bird itself—a Mississippi Kite (Ictinia mississippiensis), a striking and elegant bird of prey.

"A Mississippi Kite perches gracefully on a slender, bare branch, captured in striking close-up against a softly hued sky. The bird’s smooth, silvery-gray plumage gives it a sleek, sculpted appearance—like brushed steel warmed by feathers. Its chest is pale and clean, blending into a darker gray along its wings and tail, which are tucked neatly like origami folded in stillness. The kite’s head is turned slightly, revealing a sharply hooked beak and a powerful eye: pale, alert, and scanning with a quiet intensity. It looks focused and composed, the embodiment of a predator at rest—but never off-duty. Small pinecones hang nearby on the branch, offering a sense of scale and season, and a hint of wild fragrance to the imagination. Behind the bird, the sky stretches in soft shades of blue and gray, creating a gentle contrast that makes the kite feel both part of the landscape and apart from it—elevated, enigmatic, untouchable. A subtle credit at the bottom reads "Swede's Photographs", grounding the image in the eyes of the one who saw and paused to catch this moment." - Copilot

Good morning, friends. 🌷🌼🌻

7 July 2025

It is true that evening and night are different. While evening begins at 6 PM every day or night. Night varies here on this day, night officially begins at almost 9:57 PM. True, I just looked it up and honestly, I didn't know until now that night had an official time. Night's official time is when astronomical twilight ends, and the sky becomes fully dark. Days are getting shorter, but oddly, next week, night here doesn't officially begin until 9:59 which has me scratching my head. It's something about the tilt and curve of the earth, while the sun rises farther south each day, it doesn't necessarily sink below the horizon farther each day. Nights official time is when the sun is 18° below the horizon. 🤔

“The sky grew darker, painted blue on blue, one stroke at a time, into deeper and deeper shades of night.” — Haruki Murakami

Chorus of Herons

This photograph captures six great blue herons in flight, moving from left to right across the frame. They soar at slightly different altitudes, unevenly layered as if stacked loosely atop one another. The birds were distant when photographed, so fine details are softened, lending the image the gentle blur of a painting. Their upper bodies carry a slate-blue hue, while their undersides are pale, accented by the play of light and shadow. Necks are drawn back in graceful curves, and long legs trail elegantly behind. There's something quietly striking about birds flying in unison—as if they’re guided by a shared intention, a single mind stretched across six wingspans.

Blue Jay Becoming

I spotted this fledgling blue jay (Cyanocitta cristata)—yes, I know, another blue jay. But when they show up, you have to admit, they really do command attention. What caught my eye with this one is its crest: it fades beautifully from black at the tips to blue through the middle, ending in a soft gray right at the forehead. There’s something striking about that subtle gradient—like it’s wearing a little crown of transition.

Traffic Stopper.

I took a short trip out to Alligator Lake on Fort Johnson (formerly Fort Polk) and came back with a few decent photos—mostly turtles, sunning themselves like tiny armored buoys. But the real surprise came on the way home, when I spotted an Eastern Meadowlark (Sturnella magna) perched on a road sign near an intersection, singing its heart out.

I pulled over, blocking the right lane of a side road, and snapped a few quick shots through the windshield, just in case it spooked when I opened the door. But it wasn’t all that skittish—and to my surprise, there were actually two of them. I ended up taking a bunch of photos.

“The Eastern Meadowlark is not in the lark family (Alaudidae)—it’s a member of the blackbird family (Icteridae), which also includes cowbirds and orioles.” — allaboutbirds.org
