Jungle Firework

The Moment Before

While standing on the pier at Tybee Island beach, I caught this brown pelican (scientific name) just as it committed to plunge-dive for fish. Brown pelicans are one of only two pelican species that hunts in this way the other being the larger Peruvian pelican.

Heron in High Contrast

This image shows a Green Heron (Butorides virescens)—one of two I spotted along Tybee Island Beach. Until now, I’d only managed a hazy shot of one flying over my house. This one reveals far more detail, and it's a welcome upgrade.

Blooming Halo

This Latin American Mock Vervain (Glandularia tenera) was photographed at what we were told is a typical home of Mayan descendants. We enjoyed traditional chicken-in-the-ground tacos, and although I don’t usually drink, I had a small shot of tequila to embrace the full experience.

Whispers on a Branch

On our first evening in Savannah, Georgia, we ventured out and I spotted some intriguing birds—similar to American Robins, but not quite. Unfortunately, I hadn’t brought my camera. Naturally, the next day I was ready with it… and didn’t see those birds again. Figures. Down by the Riverwalk, though, I did come across droves of House Sparrows (Passer domesticus) like this one, along with a few Laughing Gulls.

Silver for the Sky King

I believe this is a Sandwich Tern (Thalasseus sandvicensis). I took the photograph from the balcony of a cruise ship docked in Galveston. I captured several shots, but at first I couldn’t quite tell what I was seeing—the bird’s beak appeared oddly shaped, almost deformed. After adjusting and studying the photo more closely, it became clear: the tern had caught a fish.

Quite a relaxing Saturday, though still productive. Early morning work on a private cloud architecture for Gentoo VM hosts with Rocky 8/9 VMs, then a very pleasant nap, followed by two hours at the pool for the first time in years, real D3 from the sun!

Afternoon resumed a legacy effort to process RAW slide scans of old "Scala 200" and "Provia 400" photos from the 90s (always shot at 100 ISO, with exposure coefficient adjustment to get deeper contrast). So, yeah, here's late teenage me.

Firebird in the Green

This scarlet macaw (Ara macao) was the first one we spotted during an excursion in Roatan, Honduras a few years ago, it was tucked into the foliage, shifting among the leaves, nearly invisible at first. I hung back for a while, hoping it would come into view, and eventually it did. I’m not sure how wild these birds truly are. There’s an area nearby filled with them, but this macaw wasn’t part of that group—it was free, moving among the trees.

I have been going back to the nature reserve every evening for the past week hoping to get a closer glimpse of the young foxes that live by lake. About 10 mins before the sun disappeared below the horizon this lovely creature showed up for a drink. High ISO's but some nice light . [Summer Leys 12/7]
