Commission pushes to partially suspend Israel from EU research fund – POLITICO (2025-07-28)

https://www.politico.eu/article/eu-research-fund-european-commission-horizon-europe-israel-gaza-genocide/
———

>> The European Commission wants to partially suspend Israel from participating in its flagship research and development program, Horizon Europe.

>> The proposed suspension follows the EU's review of its association agreement with Israel, which opens up advantageous bilateral relations. In June the review found Israel in breach of its human rights obligations under the deal, with EU foreign ministers slated to discuss potential consequences during a meeting next month …

>> Israeli universities and researchers funded through the more traditional Horizon Europe programs would be unaffected.

>> The decision still needs backing from a qualified majority of #EU countries. 🤔

As a Palestinian in Gaza, I can’t imagine a hopeful future, even if a ceasefire is announced soon. What lies ahead feels even more terrifying than what we’ve already endured, not only because of the vast destruction but because our genocide has become background noise to “peace talks.”

After 21 months of slaughter, in which more than 59,000 Palestinians have been killed, Arab governments appear to still be moving toward normalizing relations with Israel. It is hard to believe that Israel is being rewarded after ruining our lives, instead of being held accountable.

This feels like a betrayal.

Genocide in Gaza (Physicians for Human Rights Israel, 2025-07-28)

https://www.phr.org.il/en/genocide-in-gaza-eng/
------

>> On October 13, 2023, the Israeli military ordered the evacuation of 22 hospitals in Gaza City and the northern Gaza Strip. That day marked the start of an unprecedented assault on Gaza’s health system. Over the past 22 months, Israel has systematically targeted medical infrastructure across the Gaza Strip, attacking 33 of 36 of Gaza’s hospitals and clinics depriving them of fuel and water. More than 1800 of Gaza’s medical staff have been killed or detained.

>> Today, #PHRI is releasing a position paper that documents this assault for what it is: a deliberate, cumulative dismantling of Gaza’s health system, and with it, its people’s ability to survive. This amounts to genocide...

Gaza's famine is accelerating at an unprecedented rate.

133 lives have been lost to starvation. 87 were children. July alone saw 67 martyrs of famine, more than all previous months combined.

This is not a statistic. These are human beings dying while food sits at closed borders, while the zionists and Arab regimes pretend to help.

Break the siege now.

Oxfam has said the airdrops into #Gaza are wholly inadequate for the population’s needs and has called for the immediate opening of all crossings for full humanitarian access into the territory devastated by relentless #Israeli bombardments and a partial aid blockade.

Bushra Khalidi, Oxfam policy lead for the Occupied #Palestinian territory, said:

Deadly airdrops and a trickle of trucks won’t undo months of engineered starvation in Gaza.

What’s needed is the immediate opening of all crossings for full, unhindered, and safe aid delivery across all of Gaza and a permanent ceasefire. Anything less risks being little more than a tactical gesture.

After Israeli restrictions on aid, hunger has risen across Gaza. Doctors and nurses, struggling to find food themselves, lack the resources to stem the surge.

Patrick Kingsley reported from Jerusalem; Bilal Shbair from Deir al-Balah, Gaza; and Rawan Sheikh Ahmad from Haifa, Israel.
July 27, 2025Updated 6:44 a.m. ET

In several of the hospitals still functioning in Gaza, nurses are fainting from hunger and dehydration. Managers often cannot provide meals for patients or medical staff. Doctors are running low on formula for newborn babies, in some cases giving them water alone.

And at least three major hospitals lack the nutritional fluids needed to properly treat malnourished children and adults.

Those scenes were described in interviews starting Friday with seven doctors — 4 from Gaza, and 3 volunteers from Australia, Britain and the US.

>> A letter signed by 341 prominent Israeli academics and professors has urged an end to the targeting of civilians, calling for "moral limits on military operations in Gaza."

>> "The wound of October 7 remains open, and 50 of our citizens are being held by Hamas in unbearable conditions. But at the height of this pain, the suffering our actions cause to others cannot be ignored," the letter read.

>> The signatories demanded immediate entry of food, water, and medical aid into the besieged enclave, describing the situation as a "serious humanitarian collapse."

Exclusive: USAID analysis found no evidence of massive Hamas theft of Gaza aid | Reuters (2025-07-25)

A reminder.

>> An internal U.S. government analysis found no evidence of systematic theft by the Palestinian militant group Hamas of U.S.-funded humanitarian supplies, challenging the main rationale that Israel and the U.S. give for backing a new armed private aid operation.

>> The analysis, which has not been previously reported, was conducted by a bureau within the U.S. Agency for International Development and completed in late June. It examined 156 incidents of theft or loss of U.S.-funded supplies reported by U.S. aid partner organizations between October 2023 and this May.

>> It found “no reports alleging Hamas” benefited from U.S.-funded supplies ...

KHAN YOUNIS, Gaza Strip (AP) — A mother pressed a final kiss to what remained of her 5-month-old daughter and wept. Esraa Abu Halib’s baby now weighed less than when she was born.

On a sunny street in shattered Gaza, the bundle containing Zainab Abu Halib represented the latest death from starvation after 21 months of war and Israeli restrictions on aid.

The baby was brought to the pediatric department of Nasser Hospital on Friday. She was already dead. A worker at the morgue carefully removed her Mickey Mouse-printed shirt, pulling it over her sunken, open eyes. He pulled up the hems of her pants to show her knobby knees. His thumb was wider than her ankle. He could count the bones of her chest.

Israel has long restricted or completely blocked aid to Gaza on the argument that Hamas steals it to use as a weapon of control

By Natan Odenheimer Reporting from Jerusalem July 26, 2025 Updated 1:34 p.m. ET

More than 100 aid agencies and rights groups warned this past week of “mass starvation” and implored Israel to lift restrictions on humanitarian assistance. The European Union and at least 28 governments, including Israeli allies like Britain, France and Canada, issued a joint statement condemning Israel’s “drip-feeding of aid” to Gaza’s two million Palestinian residents.

Israel has largely brushed off the criticism.

David Mencer, a government spokesman, said this week that there was “no famine caused by Israel.” Instead, he blamed Hamas and poor coordination by the United Nations for any food shortages.
