I keep seeing posts about people getting their nails done. And they’re inches long. Some as long as their whole hands. I don’t understand it. A lady who works at our Wendy’s has extra long nails like this and it especially grossed me out at food service places. I don’t know if I’m just being weird or not

Edit: it seems I’m am far from alone! And I don’t care what y’all grossies with the two inch nails say, wiping your ass with nails like that is not as hygienic as with normal people nails

I took the emotional support water bottle joke in college a lot too seriously and now every time I leave the house I HAVE to bring water whether it’s a little or a giant bottle. This means every time I go out I bring a backpack but now I’m annoyed bc I want to bring a small cuter handbag but then I’m like, “What if I get thirsty?” For people who don’t do you just not get thirsty?

I was just talking with my friends last night and the topic of relationships had come up. None of them had a successful one going on but are struggling to move on. And I was just really puzzled as to why it was so hard to move on? Even Sadh-guru says it'll make you feel like you're being torn apart. Maybe I'm clueless because I've never really been in one. But it can't be that hard right?

For me, it was a few years ago visiting a friend for a week outside of Boston. Several times I got scolded for calling a younger woman "ma'am". Here in the South USA, we call every woman, even dogs, ma'am.

Last night I was at Walmart, finishing up at the self checkout with my groceries. I decided to pick up a 6 pack of Mickeys Malt Liqueur because it was cheap and had a decent abv%.

When I was putting it back in my bag, an African American woman and man walked past me, and I heard the lady whisper "look babe he's drinking Mickeys" and they both laughed.

For reference, im a scrawny, 22yo Caucasian male who looks like hes 16. Im only bringing up race because I thought that maybe there is a level of cultural relevance as to why it was funny for them. Other than that I'm at a total loss. Why would it be funny to them? Is it because it was cheap?

Never finished college, or even got to actual university. Most of the people I know that graduated have pretty solid lives. Nice cars, nice apartments/homes, some are even starting families. That doesn't seem useless to me.

Whenever I hear people say their degree is useless it just sounds like they are upset that they don't make enough to buy everything they want. So what actually makes it useless?

long story short, i have a medical bill of (“only”) $2500 after an ER visit. my first medical bill since living on my own. i plan on paying it monthly and since it’s not too much i don’t really care about paying it. but it sparked a conversation between my boyfriend and i — realistically, what would happen if i hypothetically didnt pay it? additionally, would the same thing happen if i owed, for example, $25,000?

edit: thanks for all the replies! i learned a lot of useful information. im on a payment plan for my bill and have already begun paying it, i just made this post because i was curious! moral of the story pay your bills or else it’ll fuck your credit up :P

I just moved to Slovakia and I see nuns walking around everywhere, usually at the grocery store or getting around on electric scooters. So then I got to thinking…. What does a typical day in the life look like?

I notice that lots of Americans on here talk about having roommates, but this sort of seems incongruous with America being an affluent country with larger houses than most European ones. So I wondered if they were in fact talking about housemates?

As I understand it, a cellmate is somebody you share a cell with. A shipmate is somebody you are onboard a ship with. A classmate is somebody you share a class with. A workmate is somebody you share a workplace with. A roommate is somebody you share a room with, while a housemate is somebody you share a house with. Does it not work like this in America? Do you really have so many adults living in shared bedrooms (who you aren't actually sleeping with!?)

What happens when one person wants to sleep and the other wants to play drums? I need to know. 😅

I am not a native speaker, although I use English very often at work (but rarely communicate with native speakers, be it Americans or Britons).

I met some Americans earlier this year and I had absolutely no trouble following their conversations or understanding what they were saying to me.

A few days ago I was in London and spent some time in a social setting with British people... And while I could understand what they were saying most of the time, I found myself focusing really hard to do so.

Maybe it's the fact that if I listen to podcasts in English, or watch movies or videos in English, they're usually American English, but man, I feel like the standard American accent is so much easier to understand than British Received Pronunciation.

So Americans - do you need to focus more when British people are speaking, to keep up?

I would like honest answers, not the usual the Republicans suck, the Democrats suck.

What is gained by shutting down the government?

The federal employees are still going get paid at some point, all the bills are going be paid at some point, so what is gained by paying everything later verses paying it now?

Disclaimer: I do not plan to do this, I'm just curious about thermodynamics.

Say you usually eat the reccomended 2000 calories a day, but one day (christmas for example) you ate like 10,000 of calorie dense foods. At 3600kcal surplus to gian 1lb, would you gain 2lbs immmediately within eating... or would it take a few hours?

Or does weight gain require you eating those additional 8000 calories over the course of a week?

Conversely, if you went 43 hours without eating ( so -3600 kcal, would you have 1lb less body fat (or worse 1lb less of muscle (or 0.5lb less of fat 0.5lb less of muscle?)) by the 43 hour mark?)

I was always raised with the point of view that at the end of the day in a marriage you're sharing everything anyway so having seperate finances just makes things more complicated.

I just assumed this was the norm until I started seeing more and more posts on reddit about husbands and wives splitting bills by wage ratio, or 50-50 etc

I guess I just want to know, is it more common than I thought to have separated finances or am I just seeing a lot of the outliers?

Edit: OK so I'm seeing that on the whole, pooling is most common which is what I would expect. I still don't really understand the separate finances approach, but whatever works for you, every relationship is clearly very different and what works for some might not work for others!

I was always of the understanding that referring to somebody as "coloured" is insensitive because it separates the world into "white" or "anyone who isn't white". I agree with this point of view and try to find more specific ways to describe someone's racial background if I need to.

What I don't understand is how "people of colour" is any different, despite seeming to be the preferred term for a large number of non-white people.

Please help me to understand the distinction, and please take the question as coming from a positive place.

Edit: thank you for the constructive responses.

Essentially the title I just wad wondering if it would be weird we're off putting for a man to wear a woman's engagement ring especially being his dead fiances I know it's not exactly normal but it just feels like a way to honor her

Edit: for anyone wondering it's not a real diamond we talked about it and we both knew that I couldn't afford that it was just a temporary ring and then somewhere down the line I would have gotten an actual Diamond when we were both better off in life
