Does Lemmy.ml have any plans to disable the block on nsfw/nsfl content in coming releases? If not, is there a user migration function in the works?

This feels like an interesting topic to discuss. Do you think the moderation here is stricter than on Reddit? I am talking about moderation from mods and admins. I also saw removed by mod comments where there was a 90% chance that the commenter was banned. So what do you think is stricter in moderation?

Often the error messages are not of the full-page "Error" format ,but toast messages on the bottom left corner of the webpage saying that JSON can not parse "Time..." responses from the server.

I am interested in creating two communities with content that I miss from Reddit

I'm still not sure how upvotes/downvotes are distributed regarding the different instances in the fediverse, whether unfederated instances have an impact etc.

But already seeing a post with over 1,000 upvotes is really cool, I remember when seeing that a decade ago on Reddit meant it was a big thing.

Hey guys,

Can one of you please try to subscribe to a community from a different instance? Say, for example, [!books@lemmy.ml(https://lemmy.ml/c/books) (if you are hosted in lemmy.ml, try !books@lemmy.world). I see the text "subscribe", but it is not a button and it does nothing.

Hi,

I'm very active within OpenStreetMap. As many refugees from Reddit, I'm taking shelter here and found the OSM-community.

Hover, there is only one moderator there, which seems to be inactive for >3 years. Is there a process to make me moderator of that community? I'll make sure to create a moderation team there as well.

For reference: https://openstreetmap.org/user/Pieter%20Vander%20Vennet https://en.osm.town/@pietervdvn

There are already plenty of communities here. New communities can be created on other instances.

It’s a horrific oversight that the designers thought it would be okay for instances to block instances, but not users. Why are we cool with letting others control what we see but not ourselves? Either I block all NSFW or I’m showered with porn? I’d rather have the ability to block porn instances than have to block every user posting on them. It’s also really stupid because these users could be posting something elsewhere that I’d like to see. All in all, I’d like the designers to take a good, cold, hard look at who is making these decisions and why they’re listening to them.

It really doesn’t make sense to give instances this control but not users. I’m a huge fan of empowering users to be their own moderators, not relying on overlords with an agenda to do it for them.

From 3 other lemmy.ml federated lemmings I cannot fully subscribe to lemmy.ml communities. They all just stay in 'Subscription Pending'. It was pointed out that I would still get updates from these communities, and I decided to roll with it. BUT the thing is… you can't cross-post using the lemmy built in if not fully subscribed.

How long until this might be alleviated? Has lemmy.ml considered asking some communities to move to a less loaded lemmy? Seemingly every floss project seems to have homed here, and the subscription pending thing is getting problematic.

Thanks for all the hard work. I just want to know if it's known/being addressed.

I feel that 5 minutes was reasonable given it wouldn't be seen by too many people yet.

I am extremely used to typing my comment out and then noticing my many grammar mistakes afterwards.

It's often that it takes me multiple attempts to fix my comments, especially given how bad Google Keyboard has gotten with autocorrect.

moved from: https://lemmy.ml/post/1381521

Some communities that I would like to see (equivalent of some sub-reddits that I am subscribed to):

  • Christianity (like r/Christianity, not r/TrueChristian)
  • Anglicanism
  • DnDBehindTheScreen
  • interlingua
  • rust_gamedev
  • shenzhen
  • storyenginedeck

I've checked all these in lemmy.ml's search function and nothing as come up.

I'm not ready to take on the responsibility of moderating these myself.

Of course, they don't need to be on lemmy.ml, just somewhere federated.

Basically there is no mod that I know of for the Mass Effect community and it has been voiced to me that folks are still pending for subscription. If anyone can put me in touch with whoever so I can maybe take the role until we get more people, I'd appreciate it. I'm on that community daily so I'd be able to mod pretty easy for now since it's so few people atm

92

I've tried to sub to a few communities hosted on lemmy.world but nothing ever loads on them

For example, Nintendo and mildly infuriating are just blank pages on jerboa

Anyone know why this is?

I would have spent most of my days on reddit as a lurker, but with a smaller and fragile group of communities, we all need to be more active than we otherwise would have been for the momentum to continue.

Obviously it has slowed down a little since the initial 48hr blackout came to an end, but come the 1st of July we are going to see another burst in users who will be eyeing the level of activity while they make their judgement.

It might not be what we are all used to, but pushing to comment on more posts and even posting more articles etc over the next month is going to be crucial for the success of the fediverse.

Using a desktop web browser...

It doesn't seem like a timeout, it is always fast to respond with the error and also fast on successful loading pages. It seems to me there is some kind of resource/parameter starvation in nginx or the nginx bridges to the NodeJS app...

I'm also seeing problems with static content loading, images and css files not loading and getting a mangled half-generated page or missing icons for upvote/downvote that I have to refresh the browser with. This happens at least 1 in 8 refreshes of the page.

95

I keep having to switch to it manually, the app defaults to the "all" feed which seems to only contain this sub.

Christian, if you're out there reading this, your code could propel the fediverse into the mainstream. Web3 is real and we're watching it unfold. You can be the spark. It was never about the crypto, it's about the federation, and it has come to social media.

I recently migrated from lemmy.ml to lemmy.world to help with decentralizing and server load. I've noticed that a community I moderate, c/worldbuilding@lemmy.ml, is not updating: one of the mods I added isn't showing up on the sidebar, and a mod I removed is showing up. Plus, if I visit my community from lemmy.ml instead of lemmy.world, I see posts that aren't showing up on lemmy.world.

Is there a workaround for this?

98

So I'm part of a discussion about moderation on lemmy.ml, and it seems better to ask the community directly instead of continuing to speculate from a distance: What's the attitude here towards political debate and specifically criticism of the Chinese government? Is that allowed, or will mods delete it?

One thing I still don't understand is if upvotes are per instance or collective. If we had a karma system, it would be very open to abuse with instances popping up to farm.

I wonder what kind of metrics could make lemmy/fediverse stand out. Obviously the discussions are the point, but karma was a psychological motivator.

Its now running on a dedicated server with 6 cores/12 threads and 32 gb ram. I hope this will be enough for the near future. Nevertheless, new users should still prefer to signup on other instances.

This server is financed from donations to the Lemmy project. If you want to support it, please consider donating.
