I'm visiting my parents for the holidays and convinced them to let me switch them to Linux.

They use their computer for the typical basic stuff; email, YouTube, Word, Facebook, and occasionally printing/scanning.

I promised my mom that everything would look the same and work the same. I used Linux Mint and customized the theme to look like Windows 10. I even replaced the Mint "Start" button with the Windows logo.

So far they like it and everything runs great. Plus it's snappier now that Windows isn't hogging all the system resources.

My mom even commented on "how nice it looks." Great work Mint team and community, we have added a few more to the ranks!

Linux Mint. Current release. Cinnamon desktop with default main menu.

Still struggling with that. I have two applications with no app icon in the menu. I want to add the correct icon by hand. Unfortunately, I can only choose icons provided from Linux mint. Is there a way to add your own icons to the choice dialog? How?

Worked with linux servers plenty with a development job but new to running at home and using a desktop interface. I'm using RDP to access the machine and have run into a few issues I'm not sure how to solve.

First, I'm using Mate and I've noticed issues with have the panel/task bar disappearing. When the machine first boots my user account is logged in and if I then RDP into the machine, the panel doesn't show. If I go to the machine physically and logout, then when I RDP in I can see the panel, but that's a hassle. Seems only one instance of the panel with run. Do I need to create a different user to use with RDP to avoid this? Other options?

Second, physically working on the machine I can go into the network settings and make changes. However when I RDP into the machine - using the same user account - the widget to let me see and edit the details of the network interface is disabled. Why is it that a physical session seems to have sudo access through the UI but an RDP session doesn't? Can I change this too?

I decided I wanted to try daily driving mint on my main machine and ever since install I've not been able to get the login screen to display properly on any one of my monitors. It'll always show roughly 45% of the screen on my smallest 1080p monitor. Tinkering with the "login window" settings got it working enough that I can kinda see the password field but no further. I haven't seen anything like this on the forums so I was hoping someone could help me out here.

Hi, I'm quite new to Linux. I installed Mint Cinnamon recently on a Windows laptop. Impressed.

Question: I have a semi-retired 2010 Mac mini server (two HDDs in it) that is running OCLP and MacOS Monterey. It runs, but it crawls without an SSD. I use it for music playback and occasional web browsing (which is painful). I am wondering if Linux would run better, but would prefer to keep a dual boot with MacOS.

How doable is this? Any opinions on what version of Linux to install?

As the title says, I also added a common storage partition that is independent of both for steam games and such... how much incompatible both distros programs are?

I know is a not that easy to install a .deb in suse ad such.

…or two. I forcibly installed snap on my mint os. I also tried to manually remove flatpaks.

Not sure if snap affected this, but when I log in I get some error message saying : unable to launch “cinnamon-session-cinnamon” X session - - - “cinnamon-session-cinnamon” not found; falling back to default session.

Then it goes to a blank screen.

I have an issue where when I start up modded minecraft, PC uses little ram and system monitor reports that java never exceeds the max of 8gb ram I set. When I start flying around and mapping out the server using a minimap and world map, RAM usage keeps rising till PC starts lagging showing 90%+ of ram being used despite system monitor reporting 8gb for java and mb (or less) of usage on everything else. I even tried using free and htop in terminal but same results. Closing minecraft makes ram drop, but never all the way as shown in the images.

I am on Linux Mint 21.2, running minecraft through prism launcher, modpack was ATM8, but I noticed it happens on all modpacks. Not sure if this is a minecraft or mint issue, so I hope someone can explain or point me in the right direction

How does one hide or remove the places folder in the cinnamon start menu?

basically the title, how can I tweak a desktop theme so it fits more my colour scheme?

Edt: I'm using cinnamon and seeking to tweak a custom desktop theme i downloaded.

I haven't seen much recently about the state of Wayland support for Cinnamon since the July blog post, in which they said they are “studying the pros and cons of Wayland.”

I don't understand why people aren't just getting started. Yeah, it's a large undertaking, but one that I think is necessary for Cinnamon.

Is there anything new since then, and if not, does anyone know why no one is just getting started?

If I'm on the desktop and type anything, a little input box appears at the bottom right. Doesn't seem to do anything. What is that?

Been awhile since I tried Linux Mint. Have no interest in using Ubuntu so went straight for the latest Debian Edition beta which was just released. This feels like such a solid release, which makes sense due to its Debian base. I really like Cinnamon and the suite of utility tools Mint ships with.

As someone who typically uses Debian, I can see me using this as a permanent desktop OS as the changes and additions the Mint team add to Debian seem to be nothing but positive.

Hi everyone, in order to change my RGB keyboard color at startup (because color is always going back to blue when I shutdown my Legion 5), I use this github app.

But when I add a startup program (with cinnamon menu) and write

~/Application/legion-kb-rgb set -e Static -c 200,150,0,200,150,0,200,150,0,200,150,0

it's not executed at startup (but it worked in terminal when I use it manually) . What I am doing wrong please?

Just in case some of you are not aware, there is a panel applet for Cinnamon called Cinnamenu. It works very similar to the stock application menu, but it has the option to select and search for emojis right from the application menu. To search for an emoji, just open the menu, type 'e', [space[, then type a keyword for the emoji you want. Once you click on the emoji, it's copied onto your clipboard, and you can paste it where you want.

I installed Linux mint on my Lenovo X131e and installing updates has been problematic. Initially I thought only Firefox was not “getting internet” but looking at the apt-get messages it appears even that is having issues.

I have never been much a Linux user since the mid90s. But have used it off and on.

I am going to be using this in my game shop to display stuff on my monitors around the shop, mostly event codes and event standings for Magic the gathering (this uses a webpage from wizards). And to play music.

I have OpenVPN setup with Proton servers. They work just fine, but I have to manually connect via the Network Manager every time I log in, which means I forget to use them nearly every time. Is there a way to make the computer automatically connect to the VPN on login?

I was using Gnome Online Accounts without any problems for my Google Drive and Calendar. All of a sudden, the drive wasn't working, something about invalid credentials. This has happened in the past. What would remedy it was deleting the info and resigning in. This time, when I did that, I couldn't complete the sign in.

I go to System Settings > Online Accounts > Google. When I enter my user name, it gets stuck and doesn't load the password screen 9 times out of 10. I will retry by closing the window. On the odd occasion it gets to the password screen, it gets stuck there. Any ideas on how to troubleshoot this?
