I had to block a few users yesterday. Today, I noticed about ten notifications from users I've blocked—they replied to me, continued to make up lies about my heritage, and I continued to see their comments in my notifications.

It seems that the only effect of my blocking them is that I can no longer see their comments in context—although I am still notified of their harassment. This is quite the opposite effect from the one I was going for—I mean, I'm happy to spend less time engaging with them, but the block feature seems to be guaranteeing these bigots the "last word" and preventing me from even reporting them. They can then follow me anywhere on kbin and continue to harass me, the block function is only stopping me from doing anything about it.

At least one of these users is on the same instance as I am, kbin.social.

Why doesn't blocking work?

I'm developing a fediverse application and am torn between using lemmy and kbin for the backend. Private messages are a very important feature that I want to include. Does Kbin support private messaging users the way lemmy does?

For example see this comment:

https://kbin.social/m/haskell/t/511582/Defeating-Return-Type-Polymorphism#entry-comment-2765579

There are so many <span> tags inserted into the code block that it has become completely unreadable.

Is this a known problem?

For some reason I just can't block @196. For several month, on PC and on iPhone. I can block other communities, but not this one. It goes into page with saying that over next few days the infrastructure will be updated. I thought in a few days it would be resolved, but it is more than two month. I thought maybe this is not known bug?

I tried messing around with other instances and all of their interfaces are terrible and confusing! I don’t think I could ever use anything other than kbin.

Today, a technical server malfunction occurred. Unfortunately, it wasn't the planned update yet. The upcoming one will definitely be much shorter ;)

For the next few hours, there may be some unusual errors. We're still working on it. I apologize for the inconvenience.

Blocking any domain by going to something like "kbin.social/d/reddit.com" and blocking it seems to remove posts at random. The pinned post for the planned October outage is no longer visible.

This appeared when attempting to view a Kbin image attachment from a federated instance.

"The certificate for media.kbin.social expired on 10/3/2023."

Viewing the certificate,

  • Validity
  • Not before: Wed, 05 Jul 2023 14:47:26 GMT
  • Not after: Tue, 03 Oct 2023 14:47:25 GMT

I see the one this page on kbin is using is slightly different. The expired one covers kbin.social in addition to *.kbin.social.

I've just discovered that lemmy.world (and potentially other) users I've banned from my magazine are still able to comment, comments I can't see on kbin but that do show up on lemmy.world.
(E: I already knew removed comments still show up on other instances, but assumed that sorts itself out in time, but now I'm not so sure)

This makes modding futile.

I want to make sure my space is safe and not hostile to those of us who already deal with bullshit everywhere else, and I can't do that when this is the case.

How do we fix this?

211

Not sure where to report this exactly but media.kbin.social has an expired Let's Encrypt certificate (expired Tue, 03 Oct 2023 14:47:25 GMT) and this is causing problems loading various images across the site -- e.g. user avatars (sometimes), images copied from various Lemmy instances, and image threads made on kbin.

It doesn't affect all images though as some are loaded from kbin.social/media instead.

This week (at the latest at the beginning of next week), there will be a several-hour technical break. A banner with detailed information about this will appear 24 hours before the planned work.

Have a great week, everyone!

For clarification, I am not talking about using multiple accounts. I am talking about using a single account, and giving your own post a single upvote.

So, I have been doing daily posts of some anime fanart for a while now and noticed something.

If you post something, unlike on reddit, kbin does not initially upvote your own post. This lead me to an interesting (albeit old) discovery. If you upvote your own post directly after posting, it gains more visibility and reaches a higher number of upvotes on average. Posts that I did not give the initial upvote consistently gained less visibility and a lower number of upvotes.

Admittedly, this is not news, same principle was true on reddit as well, the initial impression in roughly the first hour of a post dictates most of its visibility for its lifetime. However, upvoting your own post does have a bit of an odd feeling. I like the content I post and am glad when people see it, so I upvote it most of the time, however, doesn't it hold an unfair advantage over people who don't upvote their own posts and just let the community create the visibility of the post?

I'd be interested to hear other peoples thoughts on it.

I've noticed that when I'm browsing microblogs on Kbin, I see very few favorites (upvotes) on posts even when there are tons when you look at them from Mastodon. For example, this post doesn't seem to have any favorites, but look at it from Mastodon, and you see over 120. In general, federation with Mastodon is really inconsistent, but how come favorites don't seem to federate at all?

I've noticed a few things when blocking users.

  1. If i block user A, then any post/thread by that user A is not shown. So lets say a thread has posts by user A and other people respond to him, all the replies to user A are hidden and only other peoples replies in the thread is visible.

  2. If user A made link posts, they are all hidden including every reply to his thread.

When blocking a domain, i see that communities from that domain still show up in all. I'm confused how to block all communities from a particular domain.

Instead of completely hiding the threads, links and replies to banned users, can the blocked user's post/replies/threads be replaced with a spoiler that the user is blocked in preferences?

Hi, I've kind of stopped using kbin, the reason being that every time I go on this website, it asks me to relog in, even though I've selected remember me last time that I did log in.

I use a home made password manager so the password is complex and I don't remember it straight away, making it quite annoying. Is this a common problem? I have it both on the phone and on my PC, in one I use the duck duck go browser, in the other I use brave

https://kbin.social/settings/notifications

Gives me a 50x error page, for the last ~36 hours. Is it just me?

Or a thread to lemmy. Basically, how long does "federation" take?

(I am not sure if I am saying that correcly, but you know what I mean.)

kbin sounds a lot like kabin, or かびん/花瓶, which means vase in Japanese.

I’d like to help out with decentralization, with users not all gathering in one place, so I don’t want to go to kbin.social or fedia.io. I did look at fedidb.org and the list of instances there, but it doesn’t tell me if the admin is active. I could just visit every instance listed there and check the admin’s profile for activity, but I figure putting this message out and seeing who replies is a pretty good test of which kbin instances have an active admin that takes me less time.

EDIT: Also saw this from Ernest, he’s eventually going to make sure abandoned instances have admins, so that’s good news.

Both [email protected] and [email protected] are being spammed constantly with opioid ads and other non-sense.

It's quite annoying if you want to use the all-feed. I've blocked at least 6 spam accounts just today.

Just wanted to bring that to your attention. Thanks.

I've submitted the second to last #kbin #API PR for review! This PR adds thread and thread comment retrieval, creation, deletion, editing, voting, reporting, and moderation functionality to the API! The last PR will be very similar to this one, except for microblogs!

Didn't you have the API 'complete' like 2 months ago?

Yes, but it did not have any tests written to verify that it worked. These PRs have been resolving that issue so that there can be at least some guarantees that the API works when it gets onto kbin.social and others

(Also, please remember to buy @ernest a coffee if you are able, he's been burning the candle at both ends to support kbin.social and deal with personal business)
