@Ernest has pushed an update which allows users to request ownership/moderation of abandoned magazines. Ghost/abandoned magazines were fairly prevalent after the initial wave of hype due to users either squatting magazine names or becoming inactive for other reasons. Now is your chance to get involved, if you were waiting to do so.

To request ownership/moderator privileges, scroll down to where it says "MODERATORS" in the sidebar. There will be an icon of a hand pointing upwards that you can click on, then make the request. Cheers, and thank you for your hard work Ernest, as well as future mods.

Today, I started working on a provisional spam protection that should at least partially relieve admins of other instances. Work on this will continue, and the tools will be improved over time. Additionally, a few optimizations have been implemented to speed up the platform's performance, along with corrections for administrative tools.

kbin.social update (media.kbin.social)

The instance has been updated to the latest version of the code. For the next few hours, there might be issues with communication in the fediverse. We are working on it, and everything should return to normal shortly. I'll keep you updated.

This update introduces the ability to request the takeover of abandoned magazines. The karab.in instance has been updated to the latest version of the code, which prepares for the kbin.social update after some tests.

  • list of abandoned magazines (owner hasn't logged in for a month)
  • the ability to submit a request for taking ownership of a warehouse @todo
  • section in the administrator panel where one can reject or confirm the takeover of a magazine @todo

Time remaining for the kbin.social update: ? days.

The ability to 'boost' your own comments/threads has been used by a very small number of users in a way that seriously degrades conversation on the platform. These users constantly move their own contributions to the top of the conversation without regard to their value. If allowed to continue it will likely become standard for everyone to do the same and the value of the 'boost' feature will be lessened.

I can't see a downside to removing the ability to do so, and it seems like it would be very easy to implement. Though, I am open to discussion on the topic.

Thank you. (And, once again, I apologize if there is a thread about this topic already. I searched, but didn't see one.)

When I'm on Firefox, I can attach an image to a "Photo" post, but the upload button doesn't do anything. On Safari, I can't even attach the image in the first place.

How is everyone else getting around this (or is it a universal problem)?

Here's logged in vs private tab: https://i.imgur.com/8SlEMmJ.png

Also, I can't create a photo post as it turns out. No visible errors, just nothing happens.

I noticed this more than a month ago. Please help!

Are there plans for a 'hide thread' feature, under 'more'? (next to comment and boost)

Just curious. It's not the highest priority by any means, but I've found myself looking for it sometimes. (think it was a reddit option, can't remember for sure)

There are occasions when a thread is bothersome or somewhat triggering for one reason or another (maybe the image is a little much) and it would be nice to just not see that individual thread again in my own feed.

Thanks in advance. (And, sorry if there's another thread on this. I tried searching and didn't see one.)

Still no API to enable official apps and no moderation tools. It really feels like it's lagging behind Lemmy at this point. Lemmy's growth has significantly outpaced kbin and it feels like it's going to just die a slow death now.

EDIT: Case in point, there are 3 comments on this thread and I cannot see any of them.

From today, I'm starting a small series of daily devlogs where I'll be describing the changes being implemented before the official release of the first version of /kbin. As I mentioned earlier, I had some minor turbulence in my private life from which I'm slowly emerging. I have partially stabilized my life situation in various aspects. I hope this will help me smoothly return to old habits, maintain consistency, and keep you updated on what specifically is happening in the project.

There's a lot of mess I need to sort out, starting from overdue tasks that failed in queues, improving the infrastructure, and ending with going through pending emails and private messages. The first report will be out either today or tomorrow evening, as I am just about to start working on it.

#kbinMeta Is it possible to submit a thread to a magazine hosted on a different instance? I wanted to post to a lemmy.world community but I can't get it to show up in the magazine selector on the add thread page. Is there syntax I am missing here or is it just not possible?

So many magazines that were created by default as a result only have 1 moderator: Ernest.
While this is the case, anyone is free to post whatever the hell they want no matter how unrelated or low quality. This is what has prevented me from coming back daily.

As scrolling to the bottom of the page to leave a comment can be a hassle on posts with lots of existing comments, an option to put the thread comment box above existing comments would be helpful.

If people are going to migrate to Kbin or Lemmy from Reddit, given the substantial downsides in doing so for the average Reddit user when comparing community user counts, minimizing differences — or at least giving users the option to do so themselves — might be helpful. While I wouldn't rejoin Reddit even if there weren't any alternatives, it would certainly be great if the alternatives had even a tenth the number of active communities Reddit still has.

To that effect, it would also helpful if there were a toggle to automatically upvote one's own posts and comments.

Some threads that are visible when logged out become invisible when logged in. This seems to apply to all magazines and all instances - I am not completely blocked from an instance or a magazine, they just don't show all the threads. This seemingly started relatively recently, because I now cannot open a thread that I commented on 2 days ago. However there is some possibility that it happened in the past and I just did not notice, I only go here once in a blue moon.

When I open one of the threads using a direct link, the body of the post itself is shown, it shows the correct number of comments, but the field where comments should load says "No comments".

Example threads that I don't see:

Example 1 (the one that I commented on)
Example 2
Example 3

Additionally, and I have no idea if this is related, I cannot send direct messages to anyone outside of kbin.social, the "Send message" link in their profile just sends me to a 403 forbidden page. I have no idea whether this is related or whether it's just an unfinished feature (in that case ignore this) - I only noticed now, after I wanted to message somebody that unfortunately I can no longer reply to their thread.

I don't want to hurry anyone, just asking what's up, if there's been any trouble or anything.

Two weeks ago it was announced that there would be a planned outage introducing a big update that same week or early the next week (which would be last week). But that outage and update has yet to happen.

What's the situation on that? Ernest doesn't seem to have posted about it since (except clarifying that the one outage they had wasn't related to it). Did he actually quit kbin (like he said he would if it's not finished by end of last month iirc) and I'm supposed to follow someone else for news? I hope that's not the case...

Again, don't want to hurry anyone, just wondering what's up. I only follow the threads here and ernest's account for news on the topic, so I'm hoping someone better informed can fill me in.

Ive spent the last week in shock at the lack of moderation because magazines and federated stuff is only moderated by @ernest who I know is busy with development. But the magazines that are on kbin.social and were setup as "Template" magazines are getting trashed either with spam/porn or toxic comments that were reported long before they were removed. just today tech, open-source has porn on it .

Like I said I get you are busy so maybe delegate it to some people that can look after the place ? Whilst you work on kbin. I look after the magazines I run and I also run a mastodon instance. Speaking Of im also looking forward to IP banning or being able to report persistent ban evaders.

I have been following @milwaukee and @wisconsin from kbin.social and I noticed that starting around a week ago or so, I can post to the communities but new posts and comments don't make it from midwest.social to kbin.social. Is there a federation issue? Was something recently broken?

#kbinMeta

195

I know Ernest is working on getting ready to update kbin.social but are there any other instances which are faster with the bug fixes and updates?

196

Recently, I have noticed that when I make a post anywhere on the fediverse, I am no longer able to see that post, or any comments in it. If someone does post a comment, I will get the notification, and will be able to see the first few words of the comment, but if I click on the notification to see the full thread, it’ll not show up.

Feel free to post comments in this thread all you want. However, if you want to reply directly to me, you’ll probably have to use a DM, because otherwise I won’t be able to see your full comment or reply to it.

And if none of that is an issue today, and my post doesn’t disappear after I post it…well, then, hooray!

197

No real issue with comments, but my posts only show up on this server, and not on the remote one. This is so bad that I was thinking on getting a Lemmy account for posting there.

198

Sometimes I write a really good post/comment that I want to come back to I the future, such as copying and pasting.

Is there an option built into Kbin for doing so? On Friendica I can save it by STARRING it, or in the case of a whole thread SAVING IT TO A Folder. I haven't found an easily recognizable equivalent on kbin.

199

can't even post a thread in this magazine.

So my question: are we going to be defederating instances that don't crack down on users supporting and advocating terrorism?

#kbinMeta

Per the title. Just wondering if we're going to see any response if we start seeing users from particular instances spreading terrorist propaganda or supporting them.
