@ernest I'm trying to reply to a federated toot and the add comment button changes to "sending" for a while then comes back without posting anything.

Anything more I can do? this problem has happened before but I can't figure out when/why

Here are mine! A handful of things come to mind right away, but there are plenty more:

⭐ The admin @ernest is an incredibly hardworking, kind, supportive, and an all-around good person. This is my tip top most favorite thing because good leadership and communication is essential to a good and thriving community. Ernest is a star!

⭐ The ability to edit titles!!! This is sooo convenient!

⭐ The ability to customize mags with CSS! I could spend hours doing this, it's so fun! I don't know any other social media site that allows you that level of freedom of customization. It really makes it feel more personal. All my mags are decked out :3

⭐ I enjoy making scripts/styles for kbin. kbin is the reason I began learning JS, HTML, and CSS. I am so happy I started learning, and it's all thanks to kbin.

⭐Posts and conversations here are much more GENUINE. It feels like I am interacting with real people, with the goal of socializing just for the sake of socializing, which I don't get elsewhere. Everywhere else it's a competition to say the wittiest thing and get the most likes/upvotes.

⭐ No malicious, tricky, over-calculated algorithm. It's very straight-forward and honest here. I love seeing a mix of upvoted/downvoted comments in comment sections too, rather than just top upvoted, because it makes me feel more apart of the conversation with everyone. Your contributions and thoughts won't get drowned out by upvoted witty remarks, that is truly unique to kbin (and maybe elsewhere on the fediverse?).

⭐ kbin gives me the urge to contribute, interact, and create because our contributions have actual impact. Can't say the same for other sites. Everywhere else is lurk only.

⭐ Tightknit but welcoming. kbin is small enough that I run into familiar people all the time, and I recognize usernames everywhere.

⭐ Authenticity. kbin is authentic and real. It's not pushing a product, not manipulating what you see, not building an ad profile. It is what a forum should be.

That only scratches the surface! How about you guys? If you guys share the same favorite things as me, I would love to hear your thoughts on why.

I've been using Kbin for a few months now and I didn’t really feel the need to set my #feed to anything besides "Subscribed". I can guess from their names what the "All" and "Moderated" feed are but I have no idea what the #favorites feed does. I've seen that the recently added #collections also use the word "favorite" when referring to subscribing/following them. Does that mean I can't see my subscribed magazines and favorited collections together? If not, how do favorited collections affect my feed in general?

@ernest I tried to upvote this post and got an error. P.S. This happened just a few minutes ago.
Edit: I tried it again and it seems fixed.

In the past week or two, I've been making a lot of updates to my Kbin userstyle, idkbin, to account for all the new features Kbin has been getting. This weekend, I had a bunch more motivation to work on it, so I decided to make a bunch of additions to the userstyle and make the next version 1.3.0 (as opposed to 1.2.7, which would've just done some stuff with the new comment markers). I'm extremely satisfied with all of the stuff I've managed to add to idkbin, and I figured I'd share it in a thread this time since it's a bigger update.

Install here

Here are a few images that show most of the things that idkbin does:

1.3.0 Changelog (that's probably missing something but eh I tried)

Changelogs for all versions can be viewed here.

Additions & Changes

  • Sort options on thread pages and tabs on the magazines/collections page now have icons.
  • The boost button now has an icon.
  • The show preview button has been tweaked to look more like a button and is now colored when the preview is active.
  • The collection subscribe/favorite button is now colored when clicked.
  • Official collections now have a checkmark next to their names.
  • Danger buttons (e.g., account deletion, collection deletion) are now recolored.
  • The new comment marker has been tweaked to work with rounded edges.
  • The new comment marker can be recolored.
  • Comment lines are now solid and slightly thicker.
  • There is now a comment line for descendants of first-level comments.

Fixes & Settings Changes

  • Toggles and color settings for the above additions & changes have been implemented.
  • Image previews are now clipped by the bottom rounded edges.
  • Upvote & downvoting recoloring can now be toggled.
  • The smooth fade added to many elements by this userstyle can be toggled.
  • A bug has been fixed which caused fades on different parts of an object to not occur at the same time.
  • The text next to the search and add icons in the header are now disabled by default.

Today, I continue with code refactoring, getting closer to finishing the most tedious part. I've also improved tools to prevent spam on the instance, which will take effect in a few days, addressing the issue of overloading other instances that have been reported. After today's wave of spam, I've also started working on notification reports for magazines owners, which nicely aligns with the current code changes.

I've encountered an error a few times during upvoting, and it seems to occur when attempting to block users as well. I've made initial attempts to address the issue, but finding the bug might take some time. If the instance returns this error, please mention me in a post on kbinMeta along with the post URL and the time the error occurred. Together, we'll identify and eliminate this bug much faster :)

Over the last few days, there's been an increasing problem with spam accounts from lemmy.blahaj.zone. It seems like they're working on addressing this issue, at least in a one-at-a-time fashion, but it's clear that they have not been able to proactively prevent the problem yet.

Of specific note, these accounts are posting links to offensive images. kbin.social doesn't display these images inline (at least not for me), which is nice, but the fact that they're being posted anywhere feels like a liability concern for kbin.social could be raised.

I don't pretend to know what can or should be done to address this. I just wanted to bring it up, because @ernest should know about it.

I've thought the Magazines page has been messy for a while now, though with collections now also being on the same page (at least for the time being), it's starting to get very out of hand.

Firstly, there's the main functionality of listing magazines. There are technically six sort options: subscriptions, threads, comments, posts, creation date (newest), and recent activity (or at least I think that's what active is). Two of these — newest and active — are separate tabs for some reason, and the other four are under the hot tab. And if you click one of those four while you're in newest or active, you'll be brought back to the hot tab. This lack of consistency doesn't make sense and only serves to make the page more convoluted than it is.

Additionally, there are also abandoned magazines and collections, which have no search functionality or sort options like the other tabs (which I assume is just a development priority thing). Having these alongside some of the sort tabs doesn't really make sense, and it'll make even less sense if they ever get their own sorting functionality (e.g., being able to sort collections by newest).

Now, I imagine that Ernest has stuff to do (e.g., federation improvements & new features) that's much more important than messing with page formatting. Should he ever get around to it though, my suggestion for improving this page is as follows:

  • Have only 3 tabs: all magazines, abandoned magazines, and collections.
  • Each tab should have the same sort options: most subscriptions, most threads, most comments, most posts, newest, and active.
  • Each tab should have a search bar.

I'd also consider changing the name in the header to something like "Browse Magazines" though that's nitpicking.

I can't find anything on the specifics of how federation actually works. The op thread gets copied to any federated server? What happens if the thread is deleted on the op server? Does it still exist on all other federated servers? How do comments and votes work? That kind of thing.

Another update to my #kbin userstyle idkbin (now at 1.2.6.1)! The "new comment" marker recently added by Ernest is now stylized by idkbin (mainly to work with rounded edges), and a bug with borders has been fixed. #kbinmeta #kbinstyles

EDIT: Typo.

I keep noticing once in a while that when I add a link with an alias like this, sometimes the link vanishes when I later look upon my thread (not sure yet if this happens on comments or microblog).

is it my side which malfunctions sometimes?

What rules does kbin have? Like, for posting content.
I tried to google info but didn't find anything.

I have a magazine that concerns morbid curiosity so I'm wondering, where's the line 🤔 (The magazine is K18 already)

@ernest
Is there currently a way to see threads boosted by followed users as a #kbin user? If not, is that something you're planning to add eventually?

Right now, downvotes (reduces) don't federate to (and from?) Kbin instances. This lack of federation makes the downvote counter really inaccurate—a comment that looks like it's +10 might be -15 when you look at it from lemmy.world.

This leaves me with a few questions:

  • Is downvote federation going to be implemented?
  • If so, is it a priority or something that'll happen much further down the line?
  • If not, will downvoting be removed?

There's a chance that I have forgotten something or missed something.

But these are my finds, so far.

#kbin Settings->Reports not working... am I the only one or is this a known issue?

On desktop kbin is 5x better than vanilla lemmy.

But on mobile I have several FLOSS lemmy clients. They all have their pros n cons. Their development is spread out with different projects. Work and the responsibility are distributed from the main lemmy maintainers.

The kbin webapp is pretty good, but not as good as a native client. There is of course only one.

My feeling is that designing for clients (having an API) imposes some kind of discipline on projects. Like you can't just do whatever willy nilly.

My other feeling is that kbin is setting up to be like iCloud whereas lemmy is more akin to sftp.

Thoughts?
